Went and picked up this c101 yesterday from its original owner. It came with a deck snow cab, snow blower, and two sets of tire chains for $350. It was on that offer up site for almost 4 months!

If the headlamps only work with the engine running the tractor has a 3 amp rectified but unregulated charging system to charge the battery. They have been known to supply more voltage than is acceptable likely because the battery is fully charged or the battery won't take a charge. The headlamps are powered by AC current directly from the engine stator so you can't use that for DC accessories. Be interesting to see what the voltage gets up to. It may take a while for it to climb to dangerous levels. If you have an analog voltmeter compare it to a digital one without the engine running. Sometimes digital meters will give erroneous readings from emf radiation generated by the engine running. Analog meters don't seem to be bothered. Garry

So the original pump wasn't working, then a new mechanical one wouldn't work right, then 4 electrical one stoped working. The first two have nothing to do with your electrical system, and a cam being worn at less than 300hr seams unlikely. I've owned a few 12 and 14 hp magnums most had well over 1000 hr and the pumps worked fine, there is a recent post from a fellow that is the original owner of a 312-8 with a magnum that is little less than 3000hr still working fine with the mechanical pump. Pumps pull and push if they don't have anything to pull are not enough volume to pull they will burn out. My point being have you checked to see if you are getting a good flow from the tank, clogged screen in tank, old fuel line, vacuum in tank can cause low to no flow to the pump. I would definitely put a clear filter on before the pump when you install the next one, if it goes out you can see if there is still fuel in the filter, if not it's not the pump. after 2 mechanical and 4 electrical one, all ether not working, are not working properly, the pump my not be the problem. Oh I think I already said that .

Watchu talkin’ ‘bout Willis? Hey, one fellow can’t fault another for getting his daughters out in the dirt, instead of behind a tv, can he? All I know, is we wash so much field off in our driveway, it’s capable of growing crops just as good as the field

Hi folks, new member here on the forum. Ive had a few old wheelhorse over the years that have come and gone. I'm 47 years old, child of the 80s, but have always had an appreciation of older stuff. Parents always had antique/junk shop when i was growing up. Anyway, picked this up locally a couple days ago. Im aware that a few pieces parts are missing, and perhaps some parts are not original to the tractor. And even maybe some homemade parts(belt guard), the steering linkage certainly looks "engineered" outta pieces parts, but its fuctional. Any info would be greatly appreciated. The rear tranny where the wheels connect to the shafts dont look like pictures ive run across so far, so thats a mystery to me as well. The only real concern i have, is that the engine does smoke abit....it seems to run great, easy to start, idles nice....just does scare a few of the mosqiutoes away. Tranny shifts well and is quite, small leak outta one of the axle seals. I paid 550$ for the tractor, i have really no idea if that was a good, bad, or fair price to pay. Someone did seem to put alot of effort into fixin it up, so thats what attracted me to it in the first place. Gonna try and post a number of pics so you all can have a look. Any insight or opinions are appreciated, thanks, mike

Wife and I where talking about her wanting a herb garden next year. So out to get the 312 and go plowing. She said small, I made it small. Went over it 3 ways. I'm happy, wife's happy, and 312 is happy.

If your tank is not venting an electric pump won't last long.

Thanks @ACman! I know you're right, but it just gets frustrating when you think you've got something fixed only to get to use it one time! It's a super nice machine, almost new. I enjoy mowing with it when it's running, just frustrating sometimes you know. You're right about Emory. The kid never gives up and doesn't know the word can't. We can all learn some of the best lessons from our kids if we'll just take the time to look and listen!

We have a loop hole for that problem in our village. Cooking fires are legal at any time sooo... all I do is keep a package of hot dogs & a stick out by my fire. I'm no master at lighting fires so some times it can take 3 or 4 hrs & quite a few beverages to get just the right temp for cooking hot dogs.

Dells’s don’t give up it’s just a machine .... it can’t beat you! I know you would never give up on Emory so don’t let him see you throw in the towel. After reading through this thread I was thinking on the same line as @clueless but do what @Machineguy @Tuneup @gwest_ca have suggested. I didn’t even know “give up” was in your vocabulary. Sometimes you have to walk away for awhile when frustration gets the best of you but you always dive right back in head first when the time is right. Good luck buddy !

Thanks Gary. Honestly I've never checked to see if the lights work without it running. Only needed them a couple of times at night. Also, I'm going to put new fuel line on it as I replace the pump to check the fuel flow. It does have a non gauge cap, so it may not be venting? I've got a new gauge style cap that I may try too.

Not sure if this is the right place, but I thought I'd show what mod's I've done to my ploughing tractor and plough. May give some people ideas. The plough mod is already covered in my Depth Wheel thread. The first thing I did was make a tool bar to fit the slot hitch. The slot hitch is lifted and lowered by an electric actuator. No photo', sorry! As you can see it has several holes which can be used for different equipment. My plough, an Auto Culto off a walk behind, fits in the outside right hand hole. The next photo' shows the connection to the slot hitch from the actuator. The holes vary how far the hitch will go down or up. The latch is for when traveling when not ploughing. The weight of the plough and bouncing, can cause the actuator to work out and lower the plough. At the front is a 25lb weight of one of those fitness things I don't use, fitted on a modified mule drive bracket.

If you can find the ball in the valve there is a 50/50 chance the spring behind it has broken. Garry

She's nothing special, just a 318-8, going on almost 30 years old, with almost 2800 hrs, and has hardly given me any grief since we bought it new. To say its' been very reliable would be an understatement. It's cut a LOT of grass over the years, and I've never had the engine apart. Here's a few mods/repairs I've made. Since the original deck linkage and rubbing parts all have wear, it was cutting the grass too short, even on it's highest setting. So I figured one way to get it higher(without having to go through all the linkages and parts) was the create a 6th stop, or hole for the deck height setting. So I took off the deck height adjuster, and figured where the next hole would go. Drilled out the ends of the slot and removed the center with a carbide on my die grinder. Works great! The hood hood stop that sat on the top of the dash was a mickey mouse affair, so I make up a couple hood rests out of some thinner angle iron, and bolted them to the sides. They hold the hood firmly, and it no longer flops back and forth. The seat strut crapped out, so I just took part of a broom stick, measured from the bottom of the fender bracket to a bolt under the seat. found an unused hole in the fender bracket and just put a screw to hold it loosely in place. When I need gas, I flip up the seat and just place the handle under a nut,and that holds it nicely. Otherwise it just lays there. The steering was something terrible loose. So I looked under the hood, and there was a thin piece of metal there behind the dash that held the bushing in place for the steering shaft. Someone must have caught one of the wheels on a turn, and jammed it, taking that force back to the steering shaft and bending it up, thereby making the steering gears skip. So took that top panel off,and got a nice piece of 14 gauge steel, make a proper shaped (flat sided) hole for the bushing to sit in,and bolted it UNDER the piece of metal, tightening up the steering shaft very nicely. The steering block at the bottom of the steering shaft still needs to be repaired, but this made it much better, til I get to that job. She's taught both my sons how to drive using a clutch and gear shift. What better way to do it. After that the could drive our older 8 sp tractors and standard trans cars and trucks. The old 312 is in her work clothes, but it's one machine we never regret buying, and it will stay around here with us for a long time yet. Thanks. Frank

Have some nice dry pallets close by as well . Wife wanted me to toss out a wicker laundry basket today (but I saved it for tonight! Wicker burns great!!)

@ebinmaine I don’t know if you’ve seen the Gorilla glue commercials? But if the zip tie comes loose that big gorilla might run up in the shop with some tape and give you quite the scare! Happened to me the other day when a bunjee cord fix of mine came loose! Scared me to death when that gorilla ran in my garage!! True Story!

In a battery/points ignition system the A R I and S terminals are dead switch off, Put switch in run and the A R I are connected. In the Start position only the I and S terminals are connected...obviously battery terminal is hot all the time....

Here is the Kohler parts list for the M10S-461521 if that is what you have. That will give you original part numbers to search for replacement parts. Click on the picture and download from there. There should also be a bushing in the Bendix drive but that requires replacement of the drive. That plus wear in the drive end armature bushing can add up. You can get a aerosol can of graphite with a tube that works well in this application. The solvent evaporates real quick leaving just the graphite so it does not attract dust which is what wears the bushings. Have also sprayed the ring gear on the flywheel. Did not reduce the noise but it has not let me down either. This may be the same parts page but most numbers have been changed so they have to looked up individually https://www.partstree.com/parts/kohler-engines/engines-horizontal/m10-461521-kohler-m10-engine-magnum-wheel-horse-10hp-7-5kw-specs-461500-461541/electric-start-11-10-501-rev-3-15-2006-to-show-group-description/ Here is a unit available in Canada from a Stens dealer. Just more info to help locate what you need https://www.bantasaw.com/catalog/viewproduct.asp?i=&p=5587 This is what I was looking for but not listed for your starter number https://www.bantasaw.com/catalog/viewproduct.asp?i=1475&p=5140 Garry

I love small towns and country life. My own local fire warden guy told me of a loophole here in Maine. He said if it's under 24" width and height all we have to do is Say it's a "warming fire". Can't be forced to put it out.

Here picture of how the rod for lifting and the t bar come into place. The rod is basically the same as the chain but solid, it still has the adjustable nut for height. This is on a 1976 C-120.

Have you measured the voltage while running? Expecting full throttle, a bad regulator could certainly be a factor. Not good for the battery as well. My 120 shows me 16V regularly but she's not my work Horse.

Hookup is easy. The two wires you have there is for light. The + pin goes to ignition switch +, and - pin goes to ground.

I had similar problem(s) some time ago. Kept glancing at the Horse. Keeping the Stallion just 'cause he was so good. Then, went to work. Revived the Horse and now I grin every time I look at it. We're buddies! DO NOT THROW THE TOWEL IN!
