I heard the northbound lane of I-83 was jammed up. Some little red tow truck stayed in the hammer lane the entire 50 miles from Baltimore to York.

I brought a car up with my 876 from Baltimore to repair a leaking fuel line. I'm really amazed at the potential that these little tractors have! Seriously I just used it to move it around. The worst problem I had with moving it was getting traction that little 8hp Kohler is amazing!

Terry is so great, he even makes decals for things other than horses! I have a rare locally made walk behind called a wiseacre tractor that he made decals for and they turned out great!

The little lady and the boys bought one of Mike Castagno's seats for my birthday and I put that on the 68 Commando 8, nice touch!

Be very cautious if there is any gradient involved...once the car starts rolling the horse will have a hard time stopping it

Something to consider before selling it. If you ever sell the tractor, most buyers will be looking for a deck (or an attachment/s) to go with it.

I actually did it Sunday and northbound 83 was backed up outside of Baltimore so I came back on York Road through MD until I got to PA then it was open. Let me see 5 mph for about 50 miles? About 10 hours each way!

Ground was a little soggy but I had a break in the weather so I figured I would give it a try. Wifey helped with the video. Using my wheel horse tractor as a capstan winch. First try on the prototype. for a proof-of-concept I believe it works. Have to work out the stability aspects a little bit more. It lurched when the log got snagged so I shut it down. You can't see it down the hill, but there is a thousand pound log attached to that rope. Also down the hill is a block and tackle reduction and s-natch block. I'll get the bugs worked out and repost some progress next week.

Not too far of a stretch.... the next gen of Toro/Wheel Horse models (260 series and XI series) had a lot of twins painted blue and black and sold as New Holland. It would have gone to one of those originally. Look familiar?

Rain rain go away........ want to unload the 18 today. From a quick look and see. The drive belt may be too short. That shouldn't make it POP out of gear as the PO said. Didn't happen when I picked it up.... but for sure the idler pully kept a fair bit of tension when clutched. Find em don't grind em is an understatement. The blower is a Newholland???? Modified to fit right up tight. Has a lift bar and flag Made to order. Even the hub caps are in fair shape. This is definitely a sweet deal.

Adding workshop to back of garage. Moving dirt from digging footers for stem walls. Also putting carport(corral) for horse parking. Retiring from Fire dept. in about 6 months and need some space to "create". Working around daily thunderstorms and It's only 1000 degrees with 400% humidity here so going slow!

My friend Rodney Burger just bought two pair of Carlisle 6/12 Farm Specialist rear tires for his Wheel Horses. First time I ever saw these. Sold on Ebay!

OK it's been a couple of days since I brought this ole beast Home and I've been biting fingernails that it would start. Got home today new parts in the mail put them on. Points condenser and plug . Turn the key and Pa Pow! Started right up and sounds awesome! I got it to idle and rev and not a bit of white smoke out of the exhaust! Now to put the tires on it and check out the trans. Hopefully it is OK. I have heard someone say here on red square by using diesel fuel and running through the gears will help clean it out. Any ideas ?

Still waiting on word back on the charger 12....... Then this popped up. Just couldn't pass it by sooooooo. I pick it up tonite. Comes with a snow blower. Tranny pops out of gear. That's fine with me. I've rebuilt two 8 speeds an a 3 speed. Think I'm getting the hang of them. And yes my wife still loves me. She's even coming for the ride

953 nails it --- will be well worth your time to toodle off to HF and get their set of splitters. They are just plain handy around the shop anyway -- and honestly, I would think you wont be able to get the wheel off without this. That wheel can really get stuck! Put the flat sides of the splitter under the wheel and get it as close to the shaft as you can. Protect your threads on the shaft, I run the nut up on the threads rill it is just even with the top. Put a good bit of pressure on it puller and occasionally 'whap' the top of the big screw with a hammer, this will give a 'jar' to the splines and help it break loose.
  17. 3 points
Do not use a two or three jaw puller on the steering wheel. A bearing splitter should do the trick, run the nut to the top of the shaft and use a scrap piece of steal to spread the load.. If it is hard to pull you may want to warm the shaft up with a torch and apply some pariffin wax then let it cool. The heat will break up the rust and the wax will help lubricate it.

Taking a “bathroom break” for a couple days, on account of good behavior I suppose. My German kid Jil is in town for 3 weeks and she hasn’t been on the buggy for a couple years, since the suspension and Subaru upgrades. Well, I thought I had a couple cracks to take care of, ends up after I took the side panels off and started looking around, I don’t know how the front end hasn’t broken off the car! Doing a bunch of repairs this week, along with reinforcement to transfer power and suspension shock through the chassis a little better. After all, the car was built for about 40 horsepower, now there’s about 165 ponies out back. Everywhere that has green tape, along with some other prepped areas, need repairs. We are also prepping for the replacement front seats, going from fiberglass molded seats to suspension seats and 5 point harnesses. It’s good to have help in the shop this week!

Attended the Yesteryear Power Club show this past Saturday in Clay City. Was my second year attending the show. It is not a large event but fun. This also is the third time taking Horses to a show for me. Was able to get Best Lawn Tractor award with my 701 that has sickle bar, HL-5 lights, tombstone weight, and trailer hooked up . First time winning an award with my tractors. Was very surprised as there were over 35 garden tractors. Many of the garden tractors there were restored and very nice looking. My ole 701 is all original except the hood which someone painted before me. Wheel Horse had the biggest turn out having over half the quantity of garden tractors that attended. This was also the second year straight that a Putnam County Antique Tractor Club member has won the award

I have been known to get a little too fussy at times! I also have 3 520s one of which is really good shape and all things work as should on her and is an excellent runner. The other two not so much, one has smoking motor issues, and the other has a chewed up driver side axle & hub. Neither of them the gauges are working. If they were in better shape mechanically and paint wise I would maybe fix the gauges but I doubt it. I have my one beauty queen. The two sows will just get cleaned up and fixed up mechanically when their time in the shop comes so they can be outfitted with an attachment for every season and run them. I have very little invested in them and can't justify the cost and time of having everything work as should. There is no other place on earth than here for learning about the 520 than here. Use the search tool and you will find endless reading on them. How do we know if there are no ?!?!?
  31. 2 points
Yeah, we bought the place a year ago from my in laws. He builds race cars, so the shop is wired for machines and welders, heated, cooled nd a lift!

That thing looks like a blast! Is that your shop? With a lift? Jealous

I want to thank everyone for terrific comments and what a great group! I knew this is where I'd get an answer. And I can say I'm like Jim!! Super-anal. I agree the gauges don't provide any functionality but since this one is 75-80% nearing looking like new and parts won't be available forever, I've decided to fix her up - completely stock. It's that nice. I bought my 416-8 brand new in Cleveland, TN (east TN and seems a bit far south for a WH dealer?) in 1985 or 86 and it's functionally indestructable which I know I don't have to tell members. It's bushhogged, taken out small tree stumps (inadvertently!) and even mow some grass! Over time I managed to bend the spindles so it didn't mow flat - but it still mows. Moved to Jackson, TN & found an Ace Hardware in Memphis who had WH parts and bought a new deck (both 42") which I'm still using but I've managed to bend those also over the last part of my 416's 30+ year life and need to take apart and hammer back (if possible?). It has the 16hp Kohler single cylinder and runs like brand new. In fact, it's scuffed up and could use TLC also but is in perfect running condition after over 3 decades - how much more could you ask of a garden tractor? Back in the early 90's someone posted an ad in the local paper and had all sorts of attachments (like a plow, disc, etc) for like $100 and I bought 'em. and it started for me what this group knows so well. I added the tiller and it's been indespensable in doing things it wasn't meant to do - like cutting trenches for drainage, etc. The drive belt was loose and clutch spring broke a few years ago and I kinda lost interest since we live on 15 acres of mostly forest now in a completely wooded neighborhood - maybe 1/2 acre of actual grass to mow. Wife hired someone to do it and I've got really bad psoriatic arthritis with serious limitations mostly restricting me to in-house activities (like a chair - blah). Bad disease. But something crazy a couple months ago..... I read a few of these forums and got interested in a 520h. Just looking at 'em gave me 'the fever'. Thought maybe having hydraulics would help me use it and function - and I could perhaps mow with the 520h and leave the tiller on the 416 - or some such since moving these industrial grade pieces was once easy and now could put me in the hospital due to this disease. The more I read about the 520 the more disheartened I got about the engine issues - the love it or hate it relationship with the Onan. Then electrical glitches.... I was very familiar with Onan's as I worked thru college summer help in a maintenance dept. and they were used on what were known as 'towmotors' in the factory (a polyurethane foam plant) in the 70's or one man fork lifts. Propane tank operated and we would occasionally have to replace an engine due to age or wear (they were run really hard). I took one home that threw a rod but gave up fixing since it didn't have a carburetor and I didn't have any money. But Onan for me was like a household name. I couldn't stop the urge though and ended up buying the 520h I picked up two weeks ago. He sent me vids so I could listen to the engine which purred. One owner in Michigan then moved to Georgia and then to second owner in Ga who decided to restore it and now to me. I was honestly terrified of the rear seat issue after an 8+ hour drive (with skeptical wife) and who knows what else - but picked up a U-haul trailer to get it. There I was.... he turned the key... and it hit immediately. Ran flawlessly. Mentioned white smoke on start-up I worried about but it was a case of over-choking. Now that it's home I can say it hits immediately on turning the key every time. Thanx for tip on grass in rear fins - will keep immaculate. Sorry for the long story but I got excited at the responses this A.M.! I don't know what I'll ever use this for - I know maybe heresy to some - but maybe just drive around our neighborhood with my wife in a cart (or reverse). It's just sooooo nice. Engine and drivetrain are perfect and cosmetics fantastic. A fantastic condition 48" deck just arrived with top-side as new. Bought angle grinder and wire-wheeled off 99% rust/scale and done two coats POR-15. A missing steering wheel cap is coming along with a replacement for a broken parking brake lever, and have a lead on a stock replacement seat. Haven't had this much fun in I don't know when - and boy do I ache! Thanks much everyone! The steering wheel's coming off (not any serious rust on this machine I can detect) and I go from here.

Three of the four main tubes for the seat mounts are in! I am mounting the rear of the tubes as close to the trailing arm mounts as possible to help transfer power through the chassis in a stronger way... or is the plan! I’m waiting on the tube order to come in to finish the 4th bar.

Throw a tube in it. It'll be fine.

Right?! Found my first crack over by the edge while doing the floor coating.I just don't know if it was there before the diamond grinding or after. I'm glad I added them too... although it is making it more challenging to arrange the wall shelving to keep good access to them. I'll post up a couple pictures after I get some shelving redone and moved around. I'm a firm believer in teaching my girls life skills like this... (painting, landscaping, etc...), and my wife is totally supportive as well. Sadly... yes, that's pretty close. Thanks Steve, I like to think so. Lots of time and thought is going into making it "just right"

Living in the Midwest until 9 years ago, I preferred shopping at Menards over the other two High Rack stores. Their tandem pups making store deliveries were always visible on the road. I got all excited on this past Sunday when I spotted a Menards semi rolling Northbound on I-81 in Winchester, VA. Just checked the store locator and my nearest store is still Lancaster, OH - a short 231 miles away! Oh well. I will give Lowes huge kudos for their Military discount! Saved a ton of money this past year with the old and new house.

Just a follow up on this incase anyone has a similar issue. I sprayed the linkage down with PB Blaster and other lube and that fixed the issue. Pretty simple. To expand a bit more, here you go. I couldn't find anything wrong visually when looking at the linkage, however, thinking again about the symptoms which were: 1. Less stuck in reverse when I eased the control lever in reverse (slow speed) 2. Really stuck in reverse when I jammed the lever into reverse (fast speed) I kind of figured maybe the linkage was more dirty in the more extreme positions which were used less. So cleaning and lubing everything really helped. I will probably change the filter this fall and try to clean everything a bit better and get it slicked up real nice. Not sure if it supposed to be lubed or not.

I have a set of True Powers on one of my tractors & like 'em, no complaints. The Farm Specialties look like they have a deeper tread and the angle of the lug looks different. To me they look closer to a Firestone 23degree lug tire. I think either one would serve well.

No doubt about the curb appeal JA, but then some of us are anal enough to keep our 520's in top shape enough to open that can. Rich

That's because they're front tires for 4x4 subcompact tractors. You can get them anywhere that sells farm tires.

On some reproductions, sunlight can soften and you get occasional twist. I would Fab an aluminum plate and contact cement the reproduction plate to it, making a laminate prior to install. It will hold up and stay more pristine looking. the llink Ztnoo copies does work well. But the white paint will wear easily in my experience...as such, either baby it once done or be prepared to touch up occasionally. Of of course that’s my feedback. Others may have different feedback and your mileage may vary.
