Headed out at 4:00 AM today. Got up to North Point Marina and on the water around 5:30. This is out in 90 feet of water...about 5 miles out. Ray is setting up the lines. Sane place, but you can see the Nuclear Plant at Wakeagan in the back ground. It was pretty constant all day...we got off the water around 10:00 AM...it was getting real hot and traffic was not going to be fun on the way home. We put 8 fish in the boat and lost 5 for the day. I have never seen them fight like they did today...it was great. 7 cohos and one king. The King in this picture is 8 lbs. I snapped this shot when we had 6 in the boat. Most were about 4 lbs. What a great day. Should be some Salmon on the grill tomorrow.

Front end of my new Charger 12 was loosey goosey. Made a new axle pivot pin added some shims to it and teh steering shaft. Tie rods had bee welded in the past and were ready to fall off, so I made up some new adjustable ones.

(EDIT : Found out it’s a 1054 )I had seen an ad on facebook for a 953 project about 3 hours south of me the week before the big show. Didn’t have the extra cash. Well this weekend I messaged him and he gave me a reduced price I couldn’t pass up. Started digging through the shed to find things to sell. A couple hours later and I had some extra cash. Made arrangements and went and picked up my wife’s “new tractor” She took a liking to them at the show. Only thing is..... she wants a hydro. The gears are turning. It has no hydraulic pump, hood,seat/frame, missing some linkage. I have another eaton 1100 and the axles to widen it as I did with my gt14 and a ton of spare gt14 control linkage parts. We’ll see where this goes but I cannot promise it will not get butchered.

10 acres! Neither. Sounds like you need a good quality zero-turn. A 520H no matter the deck size is only going to be able to go 4ish miles per hour, you’ll be mowing foooorevvvver!

Been a bit slow with some of my projects as of late, we have a lot of general maintenance to do around our property. Also the garden needs some tlc too after the previous owner in her 90's gave up. Here's some good old fashioned 'yorkshire' dry stone walling, done as part of the work to hold up the lane where the water is starting to wash it away. When it rains in the North of England it rains! Hopefully back onto wheel horse projects for the rest of summer what it looked like as we started to shore it up another dry day and the arch going in another reminder of why it gets washed away (this is the entrance) making top stones from other corner stones - wonder how long the new stone will take to get that 200 year old patina finished!

If it was my problem l would plant a wild flower hay meadow and get my friendly local farmer to make hay twice a season. My wheel house would cut a nice walkway around the outside, and I’d enjoy the bees and butterflies.

If you like the idea of mowing with a I would suggest a 520HC and a 9'8" gang set up. https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_112395_112395?cm_mmc=Google-pla&utm_source=Google_PLA&utm_medium=Lawn %2B Garden > Lawn Mowers > Gang Reel Mowers&utm_campaign=Pro Mow&utm_content=250033&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIoKitvN6C3AIVRYjVCh0h8Qh0EAQYAiABEgKYavD_BwE I like the fact that the picture on their site shows it hooked to a . Good call Northern Tool !!

This rig mows at least that and a lot of it is not very smooth i think a non commercial Z turn would beat you and itself to death on the areas I mow. More importantly the tractor cost me 1200 the deck 1500.and i have been using her for 12-13 years now. 72 inch New Holland finish mower 1951 Case VAC rate at 21hp on the belt 19 drawbar.

You are very very welcome Jay. Sorry you could not make it this year. A great time was had by all !!! I find myself leafing through my cards every once in a while. Wish I could make them for every support member but the math just does not work. And YES Caleb was unstoppable. And Buckrancher did not let any grass grow under his feet. Most fun I've ever had with a project yet.

Like the gang mowers above, a zero turn is built to mow... that's it's only real job. The blade speed on an average lawn mower is 3000-4000 fpm... whereas the blade speed on my Gravely zt is running around 17,000 fpm allowing me to mow as fast as I can move forward. If you're mowing 10 acres... or even just 3-5 of the 10, I think I'd still look for a good Z. With that kind of ground to cover, you definitely want to look for a commercial grade unit. Homeowner grade models usually run about 7mph same as high gear on any garden tractor.... if you go up to a commercial unit you can get speeds in the 12-16mph range. My family has a commercial 60" Gravely at the Christmas tree farm and that baby mows about 8 acres of grass beautifully at 15 mph.. and with the suspension seat, the ride on that at 15 mph is better than my 7 mph on my homeowner Gravely model.

Well, you really don't have to go back. You can just turn in really really small circles.

You can be a wheel horse fanboy all you want, but the answer to mow 10 acres will never be a Wheel Horse. Unless you're retired and that's all you want to do.

Some father/son time in the corral this afternoon... This first picture would be a great “caption this” shot! Hoping to get these two tractors ready for the 4th of July parade... The Super C needed some Hydro linkage cleaning and adjustment and a good waxing. I honestly wish it looked this good in person but at least it photographs well Caleb’s hubs are a little worn and the keys are shot. Trying to at least get it functional for Wednesday. We will need to order new axle seals and probably get a set of hubs. However, Caleb will post pics in his thread and gather opinions there...I love working with this guy!

Are Sheep Better Lawn Mowers Than Goats? By Monica Kim on July 25, 2014 Share420 Tweet Pin9 Reddit Email WhatsApp 429SHARES With the doubling of Amazon Japan's goat force last month, it felt safe to assume that our hoofed friends have won some market share in eco-friendly lawn care. But a recent dispatch from Texas has us confronting a new, heretofore unconsidered possibility: Could sheep be even more effective than goats in solving your landscaping needs? For the past three months, a solar farm in northeast San Antonio has employed about 90 Barbados-cross sheep to graze on 45 acres of greenery, according to Government Technology. As previous animals-as-lawn-mowers literature has explained, this tactic is an easy, adorable way to keep costs down and pastures clean, and OCI Solar Power has used it to great effect. “ Their friendly flock has not yet destroyed any solar panels or cables with eager mouths and jumpy hooves, as goats are prone to do. The company is not the first to choose sheep over goats, though. Last year, eco-friendly Parisians caught on to the trend, and sheep were trimming lawns in Ohio all the way back in 2011. Still, OCI may have found a new, tech-specific benefit to their choice. Namely, their friendly flock has not yet destroyed any solar panels or cables with eager mouths and jumpy hooves, as goats are prone to do. Perhaps it’s not surprising, then, that other solar companies, like First Solar in Arizona, seem to prefer this fluffier, less mischievous type of landscaper. One drawback, however, may come in the efficiency department. According to this highly scientific animal mowers calculator, which we unquestioningly trust, 38 goats could mow 50,000 square feet of grass in one day. It would take 83 sheep to do the same, in part because goats are less scrupulous in the amount and quality of grass that they eat. According to the calculator, however, the most efficient animal is the cow — seven of them could easily demolish that area in a day — while the least efficient is, shockingly, the guinea pig, for which you’ll need 2,000.

The flock is coming home. Chicken and ribs on the barby with sweet corn and Mrs Ks special potato salad. If the temp breaks, maybe a corn hole tournament.

No parade tractors or fireworks. I have the new flooring installed from our post vacation water pipe eruption that forced me to remove the water damaged floor now all that's left is put new base trim in a bedroom and bathroom. Then maybe a little pool time and a little shop time while enjoying a few adult beverages.

I'll be watching closely too. I have that poor old blue 953 in the shed and I'm wondering what the tranny is going to look like inside.

It is much simpler than the 8 speed. Are you having a bearing problem??? Newer hydro transaxles rarely have any issues. They use 8 pinion differentials that have 3/8" bolts that resolved the differential failures in early sundtrand units (they had 5/16" bolts). They also do not have the internal parking pawl that when misused dumped metal shaving into the old units The bearing rarely fail. Hydro transaxles hold much more fluid than gear drives 5 qts vs 2. The case is mostly filled with fluid meaning the bearings are well lubricated. There is no gear shift hole to let in water and the high fill level reduces the water introduced by condensation. I have drained several hydros and never saw any sign of water contamination..the biggest cause of failure in gear drives. If your axle seals leak by all means replace them and if you have any up down fore and aft movement in the axles then go in...other wise in my opinion "If it ain't broke don't fix it"

I believe in miraculous healing but this may beyond the power of prayer! You should sand and wire brush the old paint to remove anything that is not well adhered to the steel. A couple of coats of primer and sanding to provide a smooth base followed by another coat of primer should give you a good printable surface. It won't be as good as going to bare metal, but good enough to last.

    Imo the best 520 made👍

The C was the commercial version. The gearing allowed faster speed, it had the better seat support and swept front axle a couple years earlier, a different air cleaner, and less frills like the shiny muffler cover. Newer 520H has the control levers next to the steering wheel instead of on the console, there are some that prefer one over the other. So basically it is the same tractor as a newer 520H, but it goes a little faster.
  41. 3 points
Well I ordered some axle seals some hydraulic oil and filter and filters getting ready for that project next

I mowed 2.5-3 acres with a 48" deck on my 520H for 15-17 out of the 20 years I have owned one, with a 60" deck I'm sure mowing would go faster than it did for me, but like others have said a ZTR would be the way to go for faster mowing of large tracts, I have moved on to a sub compact 4x4 with 60" deck and what used to take 3+ hrs now 1.5hr (lots of hills) and use the for trimming close to the house ect, but a CUB LOW BOY would be a good option also, Jeff.

All of the rest of the tractor in both the red and the Navajo white that we used has a flat white primer base of two or three coats. I don't have any Rustoleum grey primer here so we'll probably have to go with the white primer on the engine as well. @jabelman, funny you should say about the Degreaser. That's the one that I'm using on this tractor. Great stuff. I'm hoping to do a little degreasing on this engine tonight and then another degreasing in the morning and then start with the primer layers in the morning. Full report on level of success to follow!

6" long 1/4" iron pipe nipples. You have to run a 3/8" drill through the to clean them out and get right size for the 3/8 all thread. (1/4 Inch pipe is actually .364 inches ID)

If you are looking for a good mowing machine the 312 sounds like it is well priced. The 655 as a non-running unit is a bit of a gamble, Tecumseh ignition parts are hard to come by and it may be more than just points that are needed.

If's ya' install a hydro ........ DON'T THROW THAT 953'S OLD TRANSMISSION OUT !!!. The 1963 Wheel Horse Model 953 used the UNDRIVE that has "spider type" (automotive) differential gears and are very hard to come by. (Notice I do not use the word "RARE" but in this case yup those gears are RARE) Wild Bill in Richmond VA
