10 pointsLast year, my goal at the big show as to not buy a tractor. I was sucessful...until about a month later, when an 876 popped up in Richmond, and I caved. Drove up there and bought it the day it was listed. Well this year, my goal was to SELL a tractor, and not bring one home. I managed to make it out of the fairgrounds with an empty trailer, but as Van and I were eating some double R bar burgers from Roy Rogers in Winchester VA, we made the mistake of searching the Raleigh NC craigslist. I saw a 312-H that I recognized as one that was listed for sale last summer, but didn't sell. I had talked with the seller last year but my daughter arrived early. Even though the seller and I had settled on a price, I just never pulled the trigger. Well, I still had his number saved, so I shot him a text on our way home and I went and picked it up this morning! It's not nearly as nice as the one Terry just picked up at the BS, but for $260, I think I did well! The deck will need repair, and the seat looks like it fell victim to a grandchild with a screw driver. It also looks like it has never had a bath in its life. It's got about 450 hours which seems feasible given the condition of the rest of the tractor. I bought it as a non runner, but after about 15 minutes of tinkering, it fired right up. I don't think I'll use the bagger that came with it, so it may be craigslist fodder. I'm pretty tickled about it and can't wait to have a buddy weld up the deck for me! In the mean time, there will be a large cleaning operation going underway! Here are the pictures of it as I unloaded it off the trailer.

8 pointsExactly ^^^ Take a cut-off wheel ( the thin reinforced ones ) in your Dremel and make a slice lengthwise almost through but not quite . Maybe 4 cuts , then with a lot of patients and some penetrating oil , go in and out 'till they're clean .

8 pointsFirst one is Trina on the day we brought her tractor home. The ones I have with my tractor I kind of far away but you probably don't want to see my face much closer up anyways. The last one is of me at last year's Owls Head transportation museum truck show. One of my best pictures ever.

8 pointsI went to the Big Show with a '69 Charger 12 and three 48" decks, came home with another 953, tub cart, three Kohler twin cylinder engines, three 3 speed transmissions (for parts) a HD-42 snow blade, a LMR-30 front mount reel mower some tires, lots of cool stuff from @Vinylguy a couple of@BOB ELLISON seats for the 953s and a fist full of the collector cards Terry made up for us. The best thing I brought home was some great memories and a strong desire to attend in 2019!

7 pointsI had done some work for Barry on his trailer and he rewarded me with some shopping money on Thursday. I picked up this complete Commando 800 from @12 hp Kohler Robbie for the same amount as Barry gave me, so I've got a few hours of work into it. The tractor would not run when we were jumping it, so I ran to Walmart Thursday night and grabbed a battery and some random chemicals, sealants and supplies to see if I could get it going on Friday. I ended up getting the 656 and playing with that, so I started on the Commando tonight. I've been up 20 hrs, time to come in from the garage for the night. But first, an update. On Friday I did figure out that the intake valve keeper cup had split, and the valve was just bouncing around in the block when it was rolling over, so no compression and firing/backfiring out the carb and exhaust simultaneously. I found a valve set for $5 from one of the vendors and put the spares in the truck. The engine was pulled along with the wheels and tires and it was tossed on the tailgate of the Colorado. Thanks random guys that I stopped and asked for help! I dragged it into the garage tonight in hopes of making it back into a roller, but I got to work on the engine instead. The long block is assembled, I just need to torque the head bolts and put the cooling tin on the top. Then I'll have to get it back in the frame, then try to give it a whirl!

7 pointsOk, dig deep in your photos or take a new one...but let’s post up your face with your tractor or tractors! Don’t worry, I’ve seen a whole bunch of the Red Square crew in person and NONE OF US are supermodels so done be scared and post up a mug-shot! I’ll go first. It’s 4:30 in the morning here on the east coast and I’ll be flying to the west coast most of the day unable to check on this thread (maybe for a minute in Chicago) but I hope to see that a whole bunch of you were brave enough to post!

7 pointsAs many know on this site, Jim and I were partners in Shenanigans. We would talk all night or day on Skype and laugh like crazy. Chris and I would stop at Jim's on the way home from the show a few times and spend time together. I am missing my good friend, but he lived a good life and had many friends. Some of his high school classmates have just recently started getting together for coffee about once a week and Jim was thrilled about that. He was not done having a good time. I just hope he was not in pain during the end. My prayers to Karen and his family. Rest in Piece Jim. I love you man. from the Big Show 2010 CAPTION THIS!!!

6 pointsLeft the hotel at 3am Sunday morning. 14 hours later we were home. Long day!! Still had time to unload the 312-H and mow the lakefront. Love the classic but already missing my commando. Got to figure out how to get this SD deck to cut level on the side hill like my RD deck did. But that's for another thread. Good news is the 312 does fit under our fifth wheel. Also got a lot more time to visit with RS friends this year.

5 pointsI have a couple of machines missing the proper battery hold down. So I decided to make my own out of stainless (of course). Hook rods are cold rolled steel. I threaded the hook rods then heated and bent them. They have been bead blasted and first coat of paint applied. Battery hod down rods are heated and bent. Angle has been cut. Just need to weld and polish them and job done. Here are the plans. Wheel Horse battery hold down.pdf Here are a couple of pics with the factory piece also shown. I will post more when the job is done ! Cleat Wheel Horse battery hold down.pdf

5 pointsIn this day and age you can buy a liquid cooled, diesel powered garden tractor. With 1 1/2 acres of grass to cut these newer machines will last long enough that parts probably won't be available, years outIf you have very deep pockets then the some of the brands that competed with WH are out there. If you don't mind working on your own equipment then I for one would never recommend buying any new garden tractor.
-
5 pointsI think you're going to find that most of us are probably going to be biased towards older tractors and Wheelhorse in particular. That said, I mean this in all possible seriousness. Not a joke. Not trying to be funny. Not trying to be influential at all. I absolutely positively would NOT go buy a new garden tractor. I have Wheelhorses here and I just would not go buy anything else. I would only increase my available attachments. I would rather have extra Wheelhorses and fix them as needed then spend several thousand dollars on something that is new and is just not going to last. Just my two cents.....
-
5 points@12 hp Kohler Keep on collecting those parts and have a big sale at the Big Show so you can buy a pickup when you turn 16.
-
5 pointsI brought home this 8” wheel horse plow. I couldn’t pass it up for the price. I need to wear the paint off of the blade and mount the coulter yet. I also came home with two less tractors and LOTS of parts.
-
5 pointsI'm having the same problem. There should be a "NO LIMIT REACTIONS SEASON" the first few days after the Big Show!
-
5 pointsOur final day at the Show started with a big rain in the morning which wasn’t particularly good for viewing tractors but it gave a good block of time to sit and visit with folks. It was great for me to have a couple of relaxing days to be able to make some new friends and to build some existing friendships. Before we knew it, it was time to pack up. @AMC RULES did some horse trading with Caleb and we came home with a nice cultivator for Comanche. Thank you Craig and Mrs Rules for your investment (in so many ways) into Caleb over the couple of days at the Show. It was fun getting to meet @giddyap and see his fine work on that cool little ‘61 suburban. We ended up leaving the show grounds around 2:30pm. It was a LONG TREK back home but we had an uneventful trip and arrived back at Jim’s around 4:15 am! We were glad to safely make it with all our gear. Caleb and I arrived home at 5, grabbed a couple hours of shut eye, then got up with the rest of the family and headed into church for a special Blue and White Sunday honoring our local police officers. The kids of the church wrote thank you cards for the officers and Caleb took part in that as well as the flag parade. After church, we got changed hooked the trailer to the truck and headed out to Jim’s. My dad went with us so that he could see Jim’s tractors which he really enjoyed. Then we stopped by A&W where we celebrated Zach’s 5th birthday. He was excited to get some more legos and a new baseball glove among other things. It still amazes me that these two tractors are only separated by one model year. I like both of them for a variety of reasons but the guys response for the redesign of the 1965 line were amazing! 1964 was an ode to the past, 1965 models were a definite look to the future! Caleb took a couple of laps around the yard when we got back home and immediately wanted to begin working on his Comanche. I’ll let him tell you about that in his thread... As I sit reflecting on this show, the people are the main thing that come to mind. Yes, I really enjoyed seeing the many cool tractors and attachments there at The BS. But it was the friends and the families that stuck out to me the most. This picture of @dells68 and Emory kinda capture what I’m trying to say... “a father, a son, and a machine”. Many memories were made this weekend by youngsters that won’t be soon forgotten. Another chapter closes for the 875–can’t wait to see the next...

5 pointsNo fair, they used power tools! Truth be told, them Wisconsin boys could be trusted with a gold bar in the shape of a cheese wedge, if they really needed to be! Great group to joke and hang out with. Plus that apple cobbler... YUM!

4 pointsPicked up this C-160 a couple of weeks ago from Joe out in SW PA. It had been on the Classified page for a while so I went out for a look. Got her home and got a new battery, new plug, new plug wire and some fresh gas. She purrs like a BIG kitten! Drove her around the yard a few times and put her on the lift. Got some of the parts I am going to need at the BS and some more from Jay in GA. Wife told me I have to finish the all the trim work in her "home theatre" in the basement so......... I do get a few hours in. After all, "Ya gotta let the finish dry between coats"

4 pointsDoing some clean up with the pressure washer and some inventory this morning, I realized that I ended up with 3 sets of original front Wheel Horse and 2 sets of original rear Wheel Horse tires. The 857 has so much compression I about broke my wrist trying to roll it over! I'm excited about the starter/generator... even if I am Pullstart.
-
4 pointsYou know you're hard core when you stuff a brand new truck inside and out with dirty old lawn tractors and parts.

4 pointsWe just finished taking a shower and putting on the last of our clean and dry clothes and were trying to settle down for the night when the music started.... The boy asked if we could join and I said it is raining and we just took a shower. The boy replied please... that is one of the two reasons I wanted to come to the show. I replied what is the other reason? He said to spend time with you dad. So we saddled up and off we went. This is what he looked like after....

4 pointsAfter 39 years of Wheelhorse ownership, I am now horseless. My last and favorite tractor, the 1978 C141, will leave today for a new home. I hated to do it but we will be moving to a retirement community where there is no room and no need for these fine tractors. The shed that my 5 horses and a myriad of attachments called home is empty and hollow. Only a few oil stains on the wood floor are there to remind me of the time I spent on them, restoring, cleaning and repairing them. Over the last 7 years years, this forum has been a great source of helpful information. I have "met" several wonderful people in this virtual world who have helped me thru many problems, John Matthews (shallowwatersailor), Forest Road, Jerseyhawg (Glen) and of course Garry who always seems to have his finger on his keyboard, ready to respond with the needed manual pages. Special thanks to Glen Petit and Terry (Vinlyguy) who provided parts to add the finishing touch to make my restorations true to the originals and to Bob Maynard who was the source for replacement Molex connectors to keep my 416H electrical system in top condition. As I move on, I guess I will have to get a golf cart (although I do not golf) to have something to tinker with. I am sure there is an owners group for golf carts lurking out there, but I have yet to find it. It will be a difficult task to find an owners forum as helpful as Red Square. Cheers to all.

4 pointsFolks we at the Wheel Horse Collectors Club just put the show on, it's your tractors smiling faces and families that make it work ! So we at the Wheel Horse Collectors Club THANK YOU for enjoying the show. Wild Bill in Richmond VA
