Happy Sunday Evening all! So... I listed a pair of new trailer axles on ebay. Sold them to a guy literally one mile away. He comes and picks them up when I wasnt there (I gave him permission). A couple days later he asks if I have any mowing decks for sale because he noticed all the Wheel Horse stuff... I say yep... what do you need. He says I need a deck to fit this and sends pic. I go OMG and ask if he would sell... he says well im a Simplicity / Cub guy and I need a mower for the wife. Again long story short... he wants a hydro and today I rigged up a 1985 312a with a decent deck and made swap. Im in heaven... check this bad boy 1978 C161 Briggs powered beast! It has some very unique and cool features with the fiberglass blackhood / first generation C dash tower setup. It runs as filthy as it is... ill try like heck to get it to the show but no promises. Check out the “field expedient” repair on the dash. The ignition switch is held on with a door striker plate and a pull tab from a can.

Took the day to remove all the bed edge bricks, that were sunk and misaligned. The helped haul the sod, soil, and roots. Glad today's work is over but I've got the other 3/4 left to finish next time.

New here to this site, hoping to find information on anything from troubleshooting to restoration and anything in between related to Wheel Horse. I currently have 4 Horses in my "crammed" stable, I have a 1967 lawn ranger, 1970 commando V8,1971 Charger 12 automatic, and I just recently aquired what I believe to be a 1960 550 suburban which I saved from destruction (owner was going to haul it away for scrap!) Hoping to find help here as well as give it to anyone.

And, no, that's not my crab shack behind me. This is my camp. Anyone know what this yellow headed crop is in Delaware? Looks like mustard weed, but it is actually planted. Our first trip to Delaware this year found the camp in pretty good shape. No winter damage. Just an excess amount of pine tree pollen and needles to clean up and a tub/shower faucet that needed replaced.

Did you pick that up in the Appalachian Mountains of Western Pa. The workmanship on that dash repair looks awfully familiar.

... well, what's left of one. Someone painted over the serial decal, but I flaked off the paint and I believe it is 9337. It has a ton of issues - especially the transmission. Here's how it looked when I got it Thursday. This morning I removed all the homemade add-ons then degreased and power washed.

The last time my wife drove a I was gathering up rocks and stones from the yard and putting them in a dump cart. Wife asked what I was going to do with them and told her I would dump them at the edge of the small creek that runs through our property. She wanted to drive the 953 so I talked her through backing up the dump cart and pulling the handle. She did great, then she looked forward without shifting into a forward gear and let the clutch out for a second. The cart and rear tires were in the creek, she shut it off and climbed over the hood insinuating I had let her do that intentionally. I started it up and it drove right out, none the worse for the wear. Wish I had a camera with me!

The stator is behind the flywheel so a puller is best used to get it off. If the stator passes the resistance tests but still no AC output it is possible the magnets inside the flywheel have come loose. They can often be glued back on with the north/south poles oriented properly. Garry

I'm not sure.... It only took me a year and a half to get her to try it.

Rosco always had to ride. When not toting yard waste, dirt or just moving stuff, Rosco was on the move.

Wiring diagram here. Click on the picture First thing to try With the engine NOT running check the voltage across the battery posts. Now move the red lead to the 12V DC+ terminal on the voltage regulator. Should get the same reading. If not the wiring between the regulator and the battery in not in good shape. Could be simply dirty connections. Now start the engine and it the voltage increases it is charging. Next is follow the service manual to check the stator - Section 7.7 The body of the regulator requires a good ground which often deteriorates as the tractors get older. You can add a ground wire from one of the mounting screws to a known good ground. Garry

I bought a GT-1800 brand new in 84 and have pushed it when necessary for small distances. But like Bert said don't tow it. I'm currently doing a full blown restoration on mine and I hope to have it done for the big show but life keeps getting in the way!!

Nice! Stick the bearings in the freezer next to the ice cream for a few days and they practically fall in. I remember going to school for Chrysler Ultradrive (or as I referred them as Ultraslide) transaxles. There was a bearing that needed to be pressed in with a tolerance so close that the teacher said took 40 tons on the press to start it in it's bore. There was a reinforcement plate you had to bolt on the trans case to keep from splitting it. Sure enough 40 tons and the brg. started. I suggested freezing the brg. and warming the case to see how much of a difference it made. Teacher said ok so next day we warmed up the case with a torch and got the bearing out of the freezer. 6 tons!

The 73542 is a 520xi using a CH20 Kohler. Sounds like it is starving for fuel but the easiest thing to try is a pair of new spark plugs properly gaped. If they don't help remove them and save for the next time you want to try new plugs. Plugs can fire when out of the head but not always fire when in the head and under compression. Engine service manual. Click on the pictures Garry

They roll but usually you’ll hear a clicking noise. If I correctly remember what I read in my 520h manual it’s ok to push them around but don’t tow them far if at all. @BOB ELLISON seems to have hit the nail on the head.

Time for the unveiling of a 1973 16hp Automatic Got a great sounding stack from Jim Kemp, even revved up it's a tolerable sound without ear protection. The PO gave me a lot of extras A complete decal set Headlight bucket and lens Standard piston, head gasket, condenser, points, axle seal Had the hydraulic lift rebuilt by Wheelhorseman The tractor manual and parts list. He wasn't really a Wheel Horse guy so he kinda lost interest in it. The 16hp runs good with no smoke or noises. It's got a new carb and all new filters and oils. Transmission works good and will spin the tires in both directions. Some freshing up by some new paint and those decals, it's going to make a real nice worker.

Busy couple days here. Nice! Friend of mine walked the "border trail" with me Friday. Yesterday my honey and I hiked a local mountain as a warm up. Then other friends of ours walked the "border trail" with us again yesterday afternoon. Today my neighbor came over with his bx22 and we started on the excavation of the front of the shed and moved the dirt we took out down into the future trail. I'll get pics later when the rain stops.

Playing on a wind farm at the moment - things have been a bit interesting, to say the least with the up/down weather. Yesterday did not go well at all - I'm usually "The Target" flagging traffic, but got roped into helping get some equipment moving again which went south pretty quickly. Took 8 semi loads of clay to fix the soft spots... My usual office position - these rural country roads and landscape can be both boring and terrifying at the same time, local folks fly through here regularly without warning and a lot of small hills. Nothing like being dead quiet for awhile waiting for more trucks, then some nut goes by at 70mph...lol. Sarge
