So the C195 is mine. I bought it to help literally drag the machines out of the weeds. Story goes the guy I bought from had a friend who was an old timer who used to restore old machines. I picked up an original 1959 RJ with mower deck and clinton 1290. It needs a restoration but it is all there. My son Brennan Bo wants to do his first restoration so I think this will be a perfect candidate. I also picked up a super straight 857. Has been repainted at some point but is also complete with deck. Lastly, I picked up a Economy Jim Dandy. Came with a deck but that is shot. These were in the storage shed/tent that is long gone. The old timer passed several years ago. I am happy to have saved these machines. Outside of the Wheel Horse I am partial to the Economy machines. There was a round fender (1966ish) John Deere 110. I left that pig there Some pictures before, during and after a pressure washing.....

Worked on the 701 a little tonight. I finished the wiring, got the dash tidied up, bolted on the hood, and sat the fenders on for giggles. I know the hood should be solid, but the paint patina is a perfect match to the rest of the tractor. Hood, fenders, and frame seem to be a perfect match to each other, all with original paint. I was going to repaint it, but the color was too nice to mess with, so I decided to clear it instead. Still need to repaint the wheels, install the seat, install the other light, and finish the wiring. Pretty happy with the results so far. Thanks to Glenn, Terry, and Lincoln for all of their help with parts and decals!

Dragged my Honda 5hp powered 656 out of the shed today, hasn’t run in five months or so. Typical Honda...fired up on the third yank! Decided to do something I haven’t done in awhile, cruise the trail that @Docwheelhorse and I blazed years ago for our kids to tear up with quads and dirt bikes (and tractors of course). It poured like heck yesterday so plenty of wet and muddy spots but she never got stuck. Just took my time...2nd gear with the motor just above idle. Enjoy the pics! This is the widest and deepest water crossing. Probably 15’ across and a good 10” deep today! Hard to capture with a camera but this is a pretty steep hill, had to up the RPM’s before heading up this one. Tony’s “woods art”. Classic New England stone walls are everywhere around here. Tree down!!! Somebody call maintenance!! Long muddy uphill trek to get home. And you can just see my house thru the trees...home safely!

Finally warm enough I can manage to work for extended periods in garage and outside. Did post winter clean up of the garage and got the GT22-8 situated to finish the last couple mini projects, hydraulic pump/independent 3 point and the Turning brake controls. Like to have at least one of those done before mid May meet at greet in CT. Stevebo started a thread on that one. And I started accumulating the long list of @19richie66 GT14 parts to tire to the show.... I can’t start working on tractor in earnest until May as I’ll be out west for work and my Son’s wedding for 10-12 days.... Last year I had been working on tractors for at least a month by now. Or at least that’s what it seems like.

Take a hike Ritche what did I get from you... no cool Milwaukee tool stuff... no welding tips....just a pic of a jar of mayo in a sink! ! 'Sides you forgetting who offered to send you a condenser fan motor when yer AC took a crap in the middle of the summer?!?!?

I fought for this planter this morning, went too high, but it has the seed plate and moved freely. I couldn't match up this model to anything, anyone have an idea who made it? Oldman

So after work today I spent some time digging into the RJ. Got the front steering freed up and it moves nice now. Basically soaking everything with WD including the piston and valves. The frame looks like it may have been repainted long ago but not the hood. The hood is gonna need some straightening too. Those who know me know that I try to keep my machines patina. I am just not sure that I can bring this one back. PO told me the tranny was locked up. I think it was a victim of a "little" ice in the tranny... lol

Got the old Agri-Fab sweeper out and did a little clean up today after mowing yesterday. What the 314 lacks in brute power it makes up for it in its smoothness and quietness.
  13. 5 points
Wow, you could almost fit a whole tractor in there.

What flavor of engine is in it Bob? I wouldn't think it or the whole genny is made by Cat. Just their brand on it? Seems to be the thing to do theses days. What does the OM say about running ethanol laced gas in it? It would be ok to run the corn gas in it if you were going to burn the whole tank but most gennys sit and we know what corn fuel does to rubber. I would be tempted to put some of that new fangled canned fuel in it for long term storage. They have it for four stokes now and has an ungodly shelf life but might be 92+ octane. They don't exactly give it away but if it's worth it? I use it in all my 2 strokes and does make a difference. Especially when saws and weed wackers sit for months. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/trufuel-4-cycle-fuel-1-gal-1126599?cm_mmc=feed-_-GoogleShopping-_-Product-_-1126599&gclid=CjwKCAjw2dvWBRBvEiwADllhn_HMyRRbQXtiTgOjhQ63DDRvtRVVU8urZ5frLCJ5SxhMVNWRgu4rcRoCMJ0QAvD_BwE Just says high octane. How do we know this to be true if there are no ?!?!?? You know you wouldn't have this problem if you wouldn't have sold your genny to Tom!

Having looked at your post on my laptop (your location not shown on my phone I was using earlier), I can see you are in York, PA, not far from me. Your climate is the same as mine. I use straight 30W, and have never had any issues. Just change your oil regularly, and check the level frequently. Because your engine uses a slinger for oil distribution, keeping the oil level at the full mark is more important than what type or viscosity oil you use.
  16. 5 points
I don't know what your climate it's where you are, but I run straight 30w, non-detergent oil year round in all my single cylinder engines here in Maryland.

I don't post much off topic stuff, because I'm pretty tried and true with the Red... But a friend of mine just sent me a message couple days ago that was pretty cryptic. It said only "Do you want this?" And had the following photo attached: So, those are pretty unique and not just for the paint. I recognized it immediately and responded in the affirmative! I've always had a soft spot for these ones, but they're so hard to come by. He sent a few more follow-up pics: Theres another pic not included here but it just shows the non original engine as I guess the original wore out? She's now sporting an 8hp Briggs recoil start. Direct bolt in. Apparently they're cleaning out grammas garage and nobody in the family expressed any Intereste, so they reached out to the only GT guy they knew. I'm due to pick it up next weekend, so we'll see then if all goes well.

Toying withe the Idea of adding front hubs and these aluminum golf cart rims to my mower but wonder if they can withstand front load of the mower. Was thinking of reinforcing by welding wheel spacers to the back side of the hub forks if possible. What do you guys think?

Dr.Trimble, in preparation for packing that very interesting and unusual looking packaging container, if you run across any GT 14 parts Richie has not specifically inquired about or requested, I might well have interest in some items.....depending on what those specific parts might be. If you recall, I inquired not all that long ago about old style mule drive/deck drive parts, but you seemed to think you had a clearance on parts of that nature a while back. I suspect in some ways you have accumulated so much GT 14 stuff, you may not be sure of just what you have until you drag it out of boxes, secret hiding places, and the dark corners of your tractor storage facility. If you turn something up not already spoken for, please give this Hoosier Hick a shout, SVP.

Nice...@Achto says one should always have a off brand tractor in the herd and I can think of nothing better than a Panzer!
  22. 4 points
Think they would be good to go just like they are. Anything special about the tractor like a front end loader? With all that bling up front, what's the plan for back?

I too have switched to the High Octane stuff, they said it's non ethanol and stores longer. Get it at our local Kwik Fill station Made in the U.S.A. It started at 92 and now I see it's 90 octane. I use it in two and four cycle stuff: Macs, Tecumsh, Kolhers. Hot Rod stuff normally asperated and supercharged Big blocks small blocks Fords and Chevys. I have heard that Higher octane fuel burns slower in the combustion chamber I'm all for made in the USA!

Ya made me go out in the cold and take a picture Jim. You're right about selling the generator but I wanted to get something my wife could handle. An old lady like her isn't about to go swapping attachments when em power is needed. I suppose I could have dedicated a tractor to the generator but I'd hate to do that for an attachment that used so little. No, it's not made by Caterpillar but like the vast majority it just branded Cat. I went for the features and sized it to do everything we need in the house. Plus the warranty was better than most. None of that new fangled fuel in this thing. That would be $183.92 per tank. I could justify it for some things though. It looks like we have 3 that agree with my thoughts that it won't hurt a thing. @oldlineman there were mixed thoughts on the heat thing as well. I think I need to quit researching things so much. Again guys, I just started this to hear the thoughts of all the smart guys here. So far I've heard 2 (pay attention Jim, you might learn something ). There's another station around here that has lower octane booze free fuel and I'll start going there. Not cuz I'm worried about the 91 but it's probably cheaper.

35 years ago my local WH mechanic told me it's all about the oil in this small air cooled flathead engines. Heat, low oil, and dirty oil, are the main reasons they wear out or go bang way sooner than they should, he said 30w, keep it full, and change it often. Down here my stuff gets used mostly in temps 75* to 95*, I use Rotella 40w in every thing that is air cooled, twins, filters, no filters, OHVs, and as the man said I keep them full and change them often. Now days I will add one more thing to keeping these things running the way they were designed to do, DON'T USE ETHANOL GAS !! Distilled corn works well in a mason jar, not in a carburetor .

All: I too use straight 30 weight all year long in my 854 and the 702, but a couple of points are in order. Straight 30 weight comes in two versions - detergent and non detergent. I use the detergent, as there is no oil filter. Also, today's oils have NO Zinc additive in them as it clogs up catalytic converters - the zinc or ZDDP is desired in flat tappet motors like the K series. When I change the oil, in goes a couple of ounces of Lucas ZDDP Additive. As far as conventional or synthetic goes, one is "Barney Juice" and the other "Barbie Juice" !!
  28. 4 points
In my old K-series motors I run straight 30 in the summer but go to 10w30 in the winter in my cold weather workers. 35 years ago I didn't see any additional consumption with 10w30 in my 76 K-341 but I sure do now. Geez! You would think that wouldn't happen after 42 years and a gazillion hours. Seriously, oil is so much better now I feel that by changing it often enough you'd be hard pressed to go wrong.

Typical golf cart weighs in around 1,000 pounds, chances are your is a few hundred pounds lighter unless you have a front end loader. Do they make a matching pair of 12" rims for the back?
  33. 3 points
Any question is a "good question". I never seen this type before, usually one that goes in front of the tractor. I have the 1045 with a set up in the front for a seeder, but it'll be off the sleeve hitch then.

Pretty much Skipper...... for planting row crops. Some are pulled behind a GT, others are pushed by had. The seed goes in the hopper you see and as the wheel move across the ground it drops a seed at intervals set by the adjustable mechanism. The shoe on the bottom opens the furrow and behind it closes it. You can also adjust them for the different sizes of seed. I suppose you want one now?!?!? Older ones like that Old Man is showing are getting harder to find. You can still buy one new but guess what ...yup ...mostly made of plastic.

I am no expert but I have always heard that high octane gas runnes cooler in a air cooled engine. I think it is less volatile than lower octane gas.
  38. 3 points
From all my years of reading my HotRod/CarCraft magazines all stated that burning high octane fuel will only help you so much . The engine will only produce so much horse power with the combination of parts put into your build and the extra money you spent on the higher octane just goes out the tail pipe. Using race fuel in a vehicle that doesn’t get used much helps as the fuel doesn’t go bad for years. On a small engine I really don’t know the effect it’ll have on it . Bob go buy a gallon of 110 and put it in one of your tractors and tell us what happens besides that wonderful aroma of race fuel coming out the exhaust.

This isn't about a motor on a Wheel Horse but it does apply. I recently purchased a new Caterpillar generator with a 420cc motor. I prefer to run ethanol free fuel and the most convenient station to get it only has 91 octane. I figured the only thing that will hurt is my wallet a bit. I fill the generator tank and proceed to open the user manual. It specifically states to use fuel with an octane rating under 90. I've always figured that high octane fuel wouldn't hurt a thing in any motor and at the most was just a waste of money if not needed. The way Caterpillar stated things I became curious as to why so I hit the internet again. The results were mostly the same as my thoughts have been forever but there were some that said otherwise. The no-no's were mostly about some overheating around the valves. Now, I'm fully confident that no harm will come especially since 91 isn't a real high octane and, to be quite honest, I'm still with my original train of thought but the fact that Caterpillar stated that in a manner that you shouldn't run 90+ octane. With the vast amount of knowledge the members on this site have I thought it would be interesting to hear some of your thoughts on this.

Hello, I have a model 854 Wheel Horse. I still have the original Kohler Engines manual, and I need an oil change. The manual says "(SAE 30 in summer; SAE 10 in winter; SAE 5W, subzero)". My question is, should I do what I have done in the past and used straight 30 weight oil, or should I change to a synthetic oil? I would prefer synthetic, as it lasts longer, and after many years of reliable service, I would like to "pamper" my engine. If I do switch to synthetic, there are many options to choose from. There are lots of different choices, and some of them weren't around back when the manual was published. Another part of me wants to put in the straight 30 weight oil, as that is what was designed to be used in the engine. Maybe I'm just overthinking this, but this has sentimental value, and I want it to last at least another 55 years. Does anyone have any input either way? I'd like to hear what you think. Thanks in advance! Ethan

Yeah I just found out that Castrol also has come up with 5w50 and 10w60. They say the same thing, and cars like BMW M series is factory with this oil now. It performs better in the higher temps that these engines can produce internally under load. Don't see why it should'ent be a + to have better high temp performance in air cooled engines. I'll get a hold of it in my next shipment, and try it out. The same story was told when 0w40 was new to market, and so on so forth. New oils are newer (or extremely rarely) developed for garden machine engines, it's just adapted----slowly----- IF religion permits...... Good thing it ain't like that with tires. We would all be driving on white wall radials then. The Zinc additive is of no concern when using the really good modern oils, as the shear strength is so much higher. The Zinc act like a lubricating barrier, kind of like the lead did in gas once (bad example maybe). It was primarily a way of improving the load carrying quality of the oil. I'm not gonna trow more gas on the fire here, just aiming to round it of with the only thing I guess the different religions can agree on: Change it often. that is the most important thing of all!

found this in one K321 manual that I looked at: "Straight 30-weight oil is preferred. SAE IOW-30 oil is not recommended above 32F. Using this oil substantially increases oil consumption and combustion chamber deposits".
