It slipped into gear and before he could get out of the way ...

Just want to say hello & share a bit, to start. I'm not new to Wheel Horses, really, my Dad having owned them for as long as I can remember (he had @ least as many as 4 @ one time, that I remember). 20 yrs or more ago I remember we skidded ALOT of firewood with them before every winter; he plowed snow, cut lawn, etc. But it was only recently---these last few months---that I found a real interest in them, and told him so. I had always liked using/riding them, but never really said as much. Well, when I found out he more or less gave 2 away recently (they needed work), I kinda spoke up about the collectability, and how had I known, I woulda been glad to try n learn something, maybe fix them up. Then, just in talking/looking on the net, I learned more. He still had a '74 c-120; I bought a replacement headlight lens for him...he still hasn't installed it, but I think that's when he figured, and liked, that I found an interest, one that I know he always had. I will take this moment to state, straight up, that I am NO mechanic; nor am I mechanically inclined, like he is. But when we started talking Horses, him and I, I told him simply that maybe it was time I try to learn something new (small engines, and the like), and since I just like the looks of those Red Horses, it'd be neat to maybe try, and that'd be a good focal point, since he has experience with them. It's how I found this site; been lurking for months...and because of what happened next, has already been a big help & paid dividends, as i'll tell now. Was quite surprised last month when he told me he was going to look @ one, maybe two. He wasn't even going to take a trailer, 'cause he wasn't that serious. He came home late the next day with both, plus a handful of implements (all factory WH) and a homemade cab, with the help of the 1st fellow he bought from, lol. Imagine my surprise when he said one was mine, if I wanted. You'll see in those pics, the 1st time I took it for a spin...I dunno who is happier, him or me. It didn't have an hr meter, but he told me he thought it the better of the two. Well, b4 I even saw it, I found a NOS volt & hr meter for sale here, and bought them. Bolted/wired right in...I couldn't/wouldn't have bought one for the dealer price (I had checked). One final bit, then on to the pics...Dad bought his 1st WH from a local dealer way back when; Feldmann Sales & Service....as you'll see in one of the pics, There is a dealer sticker displayed proudly on the hood of it...kinda neat that @ sometime in it's life, this one, too, passed through there. They are still in business today; started out in 1956, selling WH---and the owner knows his Horses, and is a nice guy to boot (already bought some parts there). There is more I could add, but good enough for now...I already have plans for a next horse or two, as I'm able, if I can....I plan to be around for awhile, lol. Thanks for having me. And so...my 1st Horse....1992 vintage 312-8, on the 1st day I actually saw it. Annie, the Pointer, and Clara the Burmese / Border Collie mix checking things out. Annie likes to supervise EVERYTHING. Here's the whole fleet, now...FWIW, Dad has said 5 of those Husqvarna's don't equal ONE of the WH's, lol.

Picked this one up the other day. I'll try to keep the story brief. This tractor belonged to some folks who attend the same church as me. Their son is the same age as me, he and I were high school buddies and we used this tractor to cut firewood on his grandpa's place. His dad is in bad health and went to nursing home and at church a few weeks ago, his mom asked me if I wanted the tractor, to come and get it. It's an 856. The head and flywheel are missing. Son in law says the key way went bad that holds the flywheel on and he never found a replacement. Don't know what happened to the head. Crankshaft key way appears ok but it's rusted due to exposure. Engine is not seized. Got a mower deck that's locked up and all the manuals and few parts. They have a dozer blade that's buried in the back of their shed also. Gonna pick it up later on.

hi men, just used this homemade hub puller to pull the hub on my son-in-laws C161. i also used my snap-on ball joint press tool to remove the stuck drawbar pin. worked great!! regards mike in mass.

Did my annual tractor/saw massacre. Went over big as usual. For those into saws that's a 1984 craftsman/poulan 3.7 "thin ring". Surprises a lot of people

hi all, here is my son-in-laws C160. i put new front tires on with the roller chain idea. brand new plow converted from the cable angling system (which did not work very well) back to the tried and true wh coat hanger system. if i can fab this anyone can. my SIL wanted a chrome skull somewhere on the tractor so on the angle control handle it went. removed the battery box, sandblast, prime and paint. new black pipe manifold for the exhaust with custom harley stack. i fabbed a bracket to add support for the manifold. my buddy harry fabbed the counterweight support for the gym weights. it fits great in the "Hitch guys" receiver. (they are a vendor on this site and make a great product!) i added some metal wheel weights that i had powder coated. new diamond style chains for the rear. i replaced both axle seals, the tranny drive pulley shaft seal, the brake band shaft seal and fresh gear oil in the tranny. fresh oil in the engine and new air filter with prefilter installed. greased all zerks. i put on a new brake band from maynard and it stops on a dime! my bud mark painted the floorboards and belt cover. i added a couple decals from terry (another great vendor and product) and new floor board mats from another vendor (classic kitchens, great product!) special thanks to my bud phil for the pics. regards mike in mass.

Hello All, This may be long and it is my first post here. I recently made my first wheel horse purchases. My grandpa has had several of the A-90 style wheel horse tractors. Having been in a wreck many years ago he drives them around the tractor shows rather than walking. He wanted an RJ but they are few and far between here in Kansas, so I settled upon getting him an early round hood as a surprise, albeit early Christmas present. I found semi locally 2 round hoods for sale. A 653 and a 704 for $350. Neither ran, the 653 did not have an installed motor. The deal came with a H60 and a K181. I gave him the 653 and the locked up H60. He quickly freed the motor but has not taken delivery of the tractor yet for restoration. I plan on using mine like his when I go to shows to poke around on. However having recently purchased my first house and small acerage, and being an avid gardener I plan to put mine to work. So I fell off the deep end and immediately purchased: Mid and rear mount cultivators. Mid mount blade Front mount blade Extra wheels for a dual setup Rear Plow ( I need a coulter though) Dump cart (bathtub type) HY-3 hydraulic setup WT-XXX Tiller I also purchased a SR-64 speed reduction kit cover which brings me to the meat of this post. I would like to use my tiller with the reduction kit to work my garden. I feel that I can easily piece together the required components. Flat bar, 7 1/2" pulley, 2 idlers a belt and various hardware. But the dimensions of the idler setup I would like to mimic as close as possible. If someone has one of these setups and is willing to measure it I would be very greatful. If you want to know what I need then I can elaborate. However I essentially need every dimension of that bar and how it is constructed. Pics would be so helpful. Pictures if the tiller and my cover included. Not my pictures they are from the sellers posts. Having a semi permanent speed reduction kit doesn't bother me too much as I plan on buying another round hood after this one is refurbished. After all......that HY-3 won't fit on my 704. Don't tell my wife..... Thank you in advance. Pictures of the 704 and 653

I'm new @ this, and would really like to know, too....haven't quite figured out, size wise, how much tire I could possibly get away with, on stock rims. And FWIW...a BlackHood is also on my short list, of WH's to own

I've been watching what this guy has been doing for a few years now - I have friends in the cnc industry and have watched far too many close their doors , companies selling out US workers because they won't invest into doing things differently to not just compete - but to beat foreign manufacturing . History teaches many lessons that we continue to ignore - this country is capable of doing great things just by building on our biggest strength - our workers and our desire to make things far better than anyone . It's far too long that we've allowed politicians to pocket lobbying money to move American jobs overseas in the interest of making Corporations more money for their shareholders - those same companies could just as easily do it here , cheaper and far better than sending it over the pond - it's not like we haven't done that before if you look at it from a Historical point of view . I've been screaming about this stuff since I graduated High School - foreign policy and the move to close manufacturing in this country at that time cost us 9 very large local manufacturers , and enough jobs to practically destroy my home town and the local economy . No good paying jobs left - so I went into the US Marine Corps instead of getting a job that would in the end last a lousy 6 months before that plant closed and moved to Mexico . There is no excuse - vote based on what they do - not what they say and hold them accountable for their actions . I'm so sick and tired of trying to find quality tools and parts that aren't overpriced and total crap for the money - I've literally ordered high quality stuff from overseas because our manufacturers that are left have not changed their ways and learned how to do this stuff right . Guys like Mr. Gilroy are what we need in this country - but we need thousands like him to get the point across and change things for the better . I always prefer to buy American when I can - I'm not afraid of an extra cost if the quality is worth the price , but in many cases the quality is not there and foreign manufacturing is kicking our butt in so many fields because of that , we can evolve and Mr. Gilroy has proved that along with a lot of others like him . It just takes a push by the American workers - and especially American Consumers to change things . Otherwise, we lose and have been losing for a long time now . Rant off , Sarge

I have a B80-8 with a great running k181 on it and it is a 1977. From what I've read here on RedSquare the 1977 is a long frame like my C160 with the same frame numbers . 1974,75,76 were short frames with different frame numbers. I've got a k341 that runs good and will bolt right on the 77 B80 frame. Next spring I'm think of pulling the k181 off the B80 replacing it with the k341 and putting the k181 on a 67 lawn ranger . This is my thinking but I'll turn 69 soon so my body sometimes can't keep up with my thinking. I won't part out any tractor and the k181 is a great little engine worthy of a rebuild.

I have them on my 94 520. It’s going to get a loader so I’m not sure about a mower deck. I like them a lot. I have Carlyle Ags our back that are a little bigger than the turfs so it still sits pretty level. Here’s a side, 1/4 rear, and 1/4 front shot.

When I watched the YouTube video about this, ACMan immediately came to mind. http://usefultop.com/paralyzed-woman-sees-husband-sneak-garage-every-night-follows-secret-revealed/ What a wonderful device which fills a freedom of movement void for those who need them.

Me too! This is somehow getting mounted where the fan gear sits now. I will be using the stock steering tower as the power steering shaft is the same diameter as the gt14. I will simply mount the valve, insert the shaft and cut it to length, weld the pieces back together and reinstall the steering tower. Sounds easy, hope it is. Then I will get all my hoses made.
  18. 2 points
Can't wait to see how you do the valve and control. Jay

Thanks Todd! Power steering cylinder mounted. Need to get another 90* hose when I get them made. Mounting valve is next.

to Red Square , great photos and story you have the fever , so you need to purchase a for each attachment , that way your herd will grow and it is an excellent excuse when "She who must be obeyed " gives you the look plus the dogs will each need a tractor to sit on.

Might want to check the fuel tank bushing/strainer/valve to see if it's clogged up, and replacing rubber fuel hoses and filters (if they haven't been for awhile) especially with this ethanol fuel, and pull carb/ bowl to check for debris/dirt, when bouncing around it could be introducing that in the fuel passages/ needle and seat ect, Jeff.

The 76 and 77 are identical and you are correct on the frame. I bought a new 76 B-80 and did just you're thinking of. I purchased a new K-341 from WW Grainger and put it on the B-80. I still have that tractor but it wasn't in my possession for the 17 years we lived in Florida. It's now back with me and still going strong.

I've been looking for a while. The bolt holes just line up and the wire is a little tight between the fender and light. No drilling though. They were at Rural King. I think about three bucks each. Optronics MC42RS RED Marker/Clearance.

Welcome to the forum, in the pics I agree with Jay. It looks as though your pop has more excitement watching his boy take the helm! I couldn't get enough of playing with tractors, but when my girls show their interest and want to drive... that's icing on my cake!

@Team70R Works great have not had any problems. Easiest way to install chains on the back tires. I have a piece of 6x6 , lift hitch , place the 6x6 under the hitch , move to down position and the whole rear lifts with both wheels off the ground. The only major problem I ran into was the dang gas tank under the seat. Trying to position the actuator so it would not bind resulted in a lot of cussing.

I believe the 3542 idler pulleys are also used on the RJ-58 for the tractor drive belt idler. 2" OD I think. Garry

Our own RS member @grnlark ( AKA Matt ) is writing a Wheel Horse article for every issue now. We were talking about it at Zagray's and Stevebo's M&G and he has some pretty good ideas and a plan so keep an eye out for some more good WH stuff from him.

Part number 1230 extension spring Wire .040" or 1mm diameter Distance between hooks 1.750" or 44mm Coil OD .350" or 9mm Coil length 1.024" or 26mm 24 coils @ 1.024" = .042667" wire diameter Garry Adding When you go to an online Toro dealer the 1230 comes up as a duplicate part See $book. They must have another part number for the same spring but it is not published yet. I will guess an experienced dealer dedicated to his service would know how to get that information. Probably in their latest price list. Same spring was used on some of the hydro tractors shift linkage http://www.partstree.com/parts/toro/parts/1230/

After I got the wiring done...then came time for new rear tires. I opted to go with Hi-Run 23x10.50-12 ag tires for the rear. Picked them up at Tractor Supply for $89.99 a piece. Here is one of the new tires beside the tractor, and one beside the old rotted original 23x8.50-12 turf tires It turned out to be quite a chore discounting the old tires from the wheels. They were rusted on so badly I ended up having to cut them off. These pictures are from that fun filled afternoon. After all the trouble I went through getting the old ones off I decided to go ahead and have our local tire shop mount the new ones. Charged me $20 for both of them, money well spent in my opinion. I them loaded them with 6.5 gallons of winter blend windshield washer fluid per tire. Did this step myself, started with one of those little inline pumps that runs off a drill. Burnt it up on the first tire, ended up using an old RV water pump I had laying around to finish them. A couple after the first one was on the tractor to compare it with what was on there. And finally with both new tires on. Haven't got to really work her yet but I think I'm going to be really happy with these

hi all, as my bud harry and i were bringing my SIL's tractor to brimfield mass today we were heading east on the mass pike. west bound was a wh with loader on a trailer around 11am on 11/1/2017. who was it??? just curious mike in mass.

Yes they are mounted on the stock 7 1/2" rims. The bigger tires were actually a mistake, when I bought them I thought my originals were 10.50s...got home and found out they were 8.50s...then I remembered it was the JD 212 I had for a while that had the 10.50s on it lol. I wasn't sure how they would turn out but I'm happy with them

I went with 6 inch just to be safe. A rule of thumb is to double the travel measurement for the overall measurement of the actuator. I purchased mine over the net and it has load capacity of about 700 lbs. I think I paid about $90.00 plus shipping.

I would go for it! looks like a cool project. Slider under the tractor and check the fit. I had a JD 48 edge and it cut fine.

Soda is gentler than say bead blasting. You will have to flush & rinse the tank many times. You could try straight lacquer thinner to dissolve the varnish. Most of that will evaporate after the tank is cleaned.
