So since the decals are on I can call this done. Some areas of paint did not come out as well as I would have liked but oh well. As they say good enough for the women we hang out with & looks good from Berlin Dan! In a way I'm glad the paint ain't the best as now I can work it a little & welcome kids climbing on it and not fret about getting scratched. Thanks goes out to some who offered parts & advice. My home in O’Fallon, IL was just outside the band of totality, so we decided to head just bit south to Baldwin, IL to watch the event. I had been planning to take a vacation day for almost two years for this. I know different people have different opinions and feelings about things, but this was by far the most impressive thing I have ever seen in my life. Where we were, totality came seconds after T-MO saw it in Bonne Terre at 1:18 (CDT). A couple of minutes before and after total coverage the daylight shifted from being a nice, warm light to seeming like a wavelength was missing or something. Like the blue colors were missing perhaps. It was still quite bright, but the coloring was a bit off. And the cicadas and crickets started singing in the middle of the afternoon. At the moment totality commenced, it got dark VERY quickly. This wasn’t like the sun going down, it was almost like flipping a switch. The stars became visible and a few planets shared the same portion of sky as the moon and sun. Clouds had been threatening to shroud the show all morning, but when the climax came we had a crystal clear sky where it mattered most. The sky and clouds in every direction off to the horizons was glowing the colors of an evening sunset. Remarkable. It was breathtakingly beautiful and quite an emotional experience. The corona around the sun and the “bailey’s beads” and “diamond ring” were amazing. Watching the sun reemerge from behind the moon was such a sight to see and just the inverse of what had happened 2 minutes before. Somebody flipped the switch again and the lights came back on as quickly as they were extinguished. I had no prior appreciation for the rapidity of the transition from daylight to dark and back again. After witnessing this, it makes you wonder how previous generations who didn’t know an eclipse was coming were able to cope. You can imagine in less enlightened times how startling this rapid disappearance of the sun must have been….bright one second and moments later darkness falls and you’d look up to see a black spot in the sky with a ring of fire burning around it. Makes you think of Mark Twain and his Connecticut Yankee. My "Cosmos" loving 10-year old daughter has a deep interest in physics anyway, and I think this really made a mark on her. Even my 13-year old son with Autism seemed to appreciate how unusual of a moment this was. This wasn’t a life-changing event, but it was easily the most remarkable phenomenon I’ve ever seen or expect to see. We were really blessed in southern Illinois to have up to 2 minutes and 42 seconds of totality. And generally we had great weather across the bottom of the state and at least into Missouri too. Had it occurred an hour later in the day it would have been raining! We’ll be doubly blessed in April of 2024 when ANOTHER full eclipse returns to the area and sweeps through from its trip from Texas to Maine. That one lasts 4 minutes! https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/map/2024-april-8 The intersection of the path from yesterday’s event and the one 7 years from now happens around Carbondale, IL. Consequently, Carbondale drew a large crowd of people who plan to watch TWO full eclipses from the same spot. http://www.eclipse2017.org/2017/overlap.htm Mark your calendars for April 8, 2024. I already told my boss I’ll be out that day! Steve

Well the US postal service seems to have misplaced a couple of my shipments and it's slowing my project a bit. Took the opportunity to do some odd jobs in the shop and then figur d why not install the 3 point. At least it clears the parts off the bench for a while. Pretty sure I installed cylinder incorrect but for mock up it is fine. @19richie66 handwork is in one of the pics.

I had to make a decision today, Braces for 2 Kids or a C175 & a 314-8 Gold ? I gave 1400.00 to Orthodontist this after, my stomach was fighting no Fred, the tractors ? My Heart said Fred give them their Braces and respect back. Family always comes 1st, Regardless, there will always be tractors, So any one wants a 314-8 Gold anniversary in Baltimore Md, Or a C175 , Both in great condition, let me know, ill give you the info needed, here's the kids last Saturday . I wasn't aware that it happened so quickly either until I saw it on TV. It will be only a 2 hour drive to totality in 2024. God willing if I'm still physically capable I want to take that little drive.

1:18 PM today. Dusk to dawn light came on, cars going by with head lights on, and sun totally eclipsed by the moon. And the second photo, the camera's flash came on.

GREYGHOST, I believe I fixed my problem. I removed the solenoid to make sure it was grounding to the chassis. There's actually a wire running from the bolt holding the solenoid to the chassis. I cleaned the eyelet and the solenoid bracket. When removing the solenoid bolts, there are nuts on the back. Unless you have real small hands, you will need to remove the cover plate that it's fastened to. Approximately 6 bolts and the nut by the PTO rod. Yes, I was a little annoyed when I realized I had to remove all that to put it back together. Air ratchet in hand, wasn't as bad as it looked. All back together and it turned over right away...good sign....but engine not starting...oh no....now what? No spark! Good news, cranked over several more times and worked every time, just won't run. goofed around for 20 minutes or so..... Looked at my wiring diagram and read "PTO switch"..... "light bulb moment"..... Now don't laugh too hard, SylvanLakeWH did warn us. I had flipped the PTO handle when I removed the nut under the rod. Disengaged the PTO and voila, started. Started it a half dozen more times this afternoon and no problems, so it was a bad ground to the solenoid bracket.

I have seen some comments about the oil leaking. I have had this apart so much I think there was only one night I had it together with oil in it since I replaced the seals, but for at least that one night the new seals seemed to do their job. I dropped the yoke off at the weld shop this morning and to my surprise they called later this afternoon to tell me it was done already. My wallet is lighter, but the yoke is noticeably heavier and all one piece again. I had told the guy there was room around the yoke for him to reinforce it. He added more than I expected, but I test fit it and it didn't look like it interfered with anything. If it was rotating like a u-joint typically does, I'd be more worried about it being out of balance with one side being so much bigger than the other, but in this application I don't think it will matter that much. Since it was most likely already broken when I got the sickle, it is hard to tell if it broke due to a mechanical issue or operator error. I don't see any obvious issues other than a little play in the bushing the yoke inserts into. That may have occurred after it broke and not before, but if I can find one I should probably replace that bushing to reduce the chances of it breaking again. Does anybody know a source and substitute part number for the 2693 bronze flange bushing, #15 on the SMS parts breakdown? I didn't get an action shot, but here is a demonstration of what the sickle can do. It's hard to tell from the picture, but there is about a foot drop from the grass down to the field where it eroded this Spring when we got a big rain after the farmer had tilled it all up. The drop is too uneven and steep to mow with the regular mower deck. My travel chain is just the right length to suspend the sickle level with the tractor, and it did a great job cutting off the grass and weeds. I just need to get it fixed so I can finish the job.

I had another project I had to finish before I could get back to this one, but that one is now done and the weeds are getting tall so I have been chomping at the bit to get this working. It seems like all of these need the self-aligning bearings replaced on the front frame bracket. One of mine was totally locked up. Thanks to the tips on here, I was able to get the 7/8" bearings to fit the flanges and the bronze bushings to fit the 3/4" shaft. The bearings I got had a locking collar instead of set screws into part of the bearing itself, so with the added width of the assembly I needed 2 bushings per bearing, one on the inside and one outside. I wasn't sure how well, or if this would mount on my mid-frame B100 Auto, but fortunately that wasn't an issue. The only thing I had to do was make sure the steering stop was in place on the RH front wheel. I had turned it out of the way after I took the mower deck off, but the RH wheel would have gotten into the pulley at full turn without it. Since this sickle wasn't originally installed on this style PTO system, and I didn't get the original engagement pulley with the sickle, I had to get a little creative with the drive belt. I ended up using the pulley from the deck that came with my 854, and running a spring back to the belt shield bolt. With a 1'2" x 41" belt, this seems to work pretty well. So far, so good without too many difficulties, but now for the fun part... I could see the input shaft on the wobble box was missing it's seal, so I ordered an SKF 9815. I may have jinxed myself by also ordering an SKF 12330 for the bottom just in case. I initially installed just the input shaft seal hoping to not yet need the bottom one, but after filling the box with oil I found it all leaked out through the bottom the next morning. Replacing that seal wasn't too bad, but it gave me my first look inside the wobble box. I could tell there was a little bit of play in the system, but it didn't seem like anything was too bad. Inside the wobble box, the first thing I noticed was a big weld across the base of the outside yoke ear. It looked like a good weld and it was holding just fine. Peering deeper into the box, I noticed some excessive play on the inside ear of the yoke. Further disassembly revealed the issue. the inside ear was cracked all the way through. Fortunately, it looked like there really wasn't any collateral damage from it being broken, and the pieces were all there. This may yet prove to be a mistake, but I gave welding it back together a shot. The weld looked pretty good (for one of my welds), so I reinstalled the bushing and put it all back together. I finished installing the sickle on the tractor. I had to fabricate the lift rod, which fortunately there were great drawings on here of. Instead of making the travel hook and bracket, I opted for an eye-bolt and chain. I wish I had gotten some pictures of the cutting. I only ran it about 1/3 throttle so it didn't go too fast. The teeth on the sickle aren't in perfect shape, but I was impressed with how well it cut. Unfortunately, before I got any pictures of the cutting I noticed an increase in the amount of vibration coming from the sickle. Rather than risk it, I shut the sickle off and pulled the tractor back to the garage. I took it apart again, and sure enough the yoke broke again. It was only broken on one side, but I'm sure it wouldn't have been long before it was broken all the way through again. I plan to take the yoke to a weld shop tomorrow and see if they can do anything with it. It looks like the yoke might be a standard size, so worst case I think I could get something machined to replace it. I will keep you all posted.

A sickle mower has been on my want list for a while. Our yard backs up to a waterway and field, and along the edges is too rough to mow with a regular mower so we end up with a 2 foot or so swath of weeds that grow up tall. It has always seemed like a great opportunity to use a sickle. I've come across a couple the last few years but either hesitated and missed out on them or decided I didn't want one that bad to pay what they were asking. Today I finally found one and pulled the trigger. The sickle itself is free and seems to be in pretty decent shape. The seller said he used it 20+ years ago but it has probably been unused the last 15 years or so. He also had the Charger 12 that he said his dad bought new with it, but I couldn't convince myself I needed another tractor. That, and he his asking price was pretty strong for a straight, all original, but non-running tractor. So far, the only significant issue I have found is I am missing the tensioner/idler pulley. I'm hoping I can figure something else out for that part and get this unit to work in short order.

I want to do the letters and the rim on the in white on my 520 Wheel-a-Magic (couldn't have done without @Vinylguy ) . I think it would add to that 60's look ? Then again maybe just a red pinstripe on the lip of the rim ?

What will help those old flat head Brigg engines is to take a rotor steel grinding tool and clean out all the casting crap in the intake and exaust ports. You will have to remove the valves to do a good cleaning. If there are tapped holes for an exaust flange removing the pipe treads will help also.

Thanks Dave... Kudos to @dclarke for sharing his notes .. appears he saved us all some grief and wrong orders! BTW I did get my lower and side seal from local Toro dealer... Somewhat reasonable $$ wise. I lucked out and all the other bearings were in real good shape. I will continue that thread once I get going on it again.

@19richie66 fabbed up the independent hydraulic control valve handle so kudos to him for the assist. @ztnoo I don't know root cause for the corrosion but the parts cow i pulled it off of sat uncovered in field for a long time. I have a better option that will be used on the actual build. Once I've determined all the necessary modifications, holes, cuts etcetera.

Grey Ghost, I've spent a month trying to solve the same problem on a new-to-me C-161, and today I did. Loooong story short, because they were badly corroded, I first replaced the ignition and solenoid, without any change, I replaced the in-line fuse, even though it tested OK. After messing with everything I could think of, I set out to re-check all connections and grounds. I decided to jumper around the in-line fuse holder, even though it looked fine before and after initially cleaning it and sanding the contact ends . She fired right up. Hope that gives you some ideas for out of the box testing. oldredrider: , I got a three post solenoid at my local NAPA, 24 bucks. They wanted to see what I was trying to replace, went in the back and came out with a winner.

Throwing more gas in it won't help if you don't have the cam and valves to make use of it. You'll open the throttle and it will just bog down. The whole system must be improved together.

Are you pulling the dipstick and reading it, or are you pilling the dipstick, wiping it off, reinserting it and checking the oil level? My 520 will read really high oil level because there is a lot of oil in the dipstick tube. You need to pull the dipstick, wipe it off, reinsert the stick and then read the level. Darn @lynnmor you are faster on the draw that I am!.

Tried using my digital camera with different filters...not what I thought I could get. We actually had just a sliver of sun across the top that kept it from being total. Pretty cool...we had some light cloud cover, but the eclipse shown through. I took some pictures with different lenses and here they are. they do not really show the eclipse as such, but they show the solar fares...wrong filters. Check these out, and remember we were at about 90% total when these were taken. They do not show the sun as missing, but it was. These shots just had a slight crescent across the top of the sun. This is my favorite...look at the flares. Sun is actually blacked out here.
