If you have followed the "875-Iron Horse" thread in the restorations section of the forum, you know that my dad's first garden tractor was a . We finished the rectification of that tractor and have decided that it has worked hard for a lot of years and has earned a much deserved rest. Dad will use it periodically for light duty but mainly for shows, parades, etc. For anyone who knows me, I love GT plowing. Dad periodically plows with us and although the 875 is up to the task, we just don't want to put the wear on a fine resto. So, I began to hunt for a tractor for him. In his mid sixties, I wanted to locate something with hydro lift. Dad likes plowing with a gear jammer and so that was another parameter I had to keep in mind for my hunt. Because of dad's longstanding use of his 875, it had to be a horse, of course. Enter Clyde!!! Back in the spring @Shynon posted this beast for sale. Tom, you can feel free to post here any background about the tractor. I know it has been repowered and everything on it is functional. It had dad's name written all over it. So, I decided to purchase it for his birthday! I had to wait till the Portage show to pick it up since that was when Tom's path would cross with mine. the cool thing is that my dad came down to that show unexpectedly. He walked around with me and saw "his" tractor there, before he knew it was his! It was in this spot when he spotted it and we talked about it for awhile. He had no clue that these were ever made. My buddies @WHX12 @Achto @stevasaurus and @Rp.wh were all aware of it and helped me keep it a secret(no small feat for me!). Thanks guys! Here Zach is enjoying a little seat time once we got it home. It has some scuffs and scratches from 50 plus years of life but it is in what I would call "perfect plow tractor shape". Looks nice but you aren't afraid to use it! Here it sits with some of the other members of my stable. Dad turns 65 tomorrow and so the long anticipated day is almost here. We are going out with him for dinner on Friday night. I'm gonna try to have mom get him out of the house mid afternoon. Then I can bring it over and put it in the garage with a ribbon on it! When we get back from supper--SURPRISE! I sure hope he likes it. I wanted to have a set of AG's installed on the back but my fridge broke down two weeks ago and there went my $250! Oh well, there is always Christmas. Stay tuned for the big reveal...

Don't let it bother you Flynhrse, there was a few threads started about that auction a week ago so most of us already knew about it but thanks for making sure the bases are covered! For your transgressions against RS and your horse brethren by posting forbidden content in the wrong section you are herby sentenced to giving your 520 a bath monthly for two years, and changing fluids yearly for the rest of it's life. Any more slip ups like that and you will be required to acquire another . and made to log in to that green and yellow forum.....eeewww now that's cruel... BTW

You have to get to know Wheel Horse owners! Meet and greet, go places, talk, ask questions, go to some shows, swap meets, etc. Once your phone has ten of twelve wheel horse guys and gals listed you will have more ways of finding parts, tractors and information that you even wanted !

If that is the worst you do around here you will get by just fine. But don't let it happen again!

@Skipper When you search online for , be sure to search for both "wheel horse" and "wheelhorse" spellings. I've found that the search function on most sites doesn't reliably pick up everything unless you try both. @elcamino/wheelhorse, don't sell your Chevy's reliability short! Chevy's old platforms and engines are tough and simple, and take a heck of a beating and come back for more. I used to have this old beast as my work truck, until the tinworm started eating too much of the rear frame... Now there's probably a bunch of other old Chevy trucks still on the road thanks to its parts: (I think it looks better in the photo than it did in real life! ) It always got the work done and got me home even on the few times it wasn't running up to par, and the fixes were always inexpensive and easy to do. Only problem was that the rear end was geared low for heavy hauling, so 60MPH was it's comfortable speed on the highway -- which is a bit suicidal on the East Coast when everything wants to pass you at 75 or 80. The only reason I let it go at the time was that I couldn't be without a truck for as long as it would take to do the frame and body work, and a nice older Cummins-Dodge (Complete with a proper manual gearbox!) made itself available at a price I couldn't pass up.

I'm a newbie here. Just a Wheel Horse lover who grew up with one when my dad purchased a 665 when I was five years old and now have a Sole 520-H. I ran across an interesting auction and posted it in the classified section here in Red Square. Stupid me read the rules and regulations after posting and, well, it was flagged and pulled off the site for posting an auction in the classified section. My Bad... I'm waiting for the judgement and sentencing to be handed down to me by the Red Square officials. But in the meantime, anybody interested in attending a very interesting auction with over 80 Wheel Horse tractors up for grabs, it's coming Sept 15th and 16th. Multiples of just about every model made by Wheel Horse and Toro up for auction. A gentleman who was a MAJOR avid collector for many years has passed and the family has put his collection up for auction. There will be many implements, parts, whole tractors as well as partial tractor assemblies. There will me more than 300 garden tractors in all with brand names we all grew up with like Bolens, Simplicity, Cub Cadet, JD, Massey Ferguson, Ford, Allis Chalmers, Case, Troy Built, Gravely and others as wells as some very rare tractors including a Pennsylvania Meteor. For the record, I'm not connected to this auction in any way, shape or form. I'm just a Wheel Horse lover trying to help other Wheel Horse lovers with a really nice tip. I will post more on the subject later. Maybe, we should all get together and ask Red Square to grant permission to post Auctions. Maybe there's a place to do this that I'm not aware of. ( Remember in the beginning, I did divulge that I was a newbie here.) If somebody will tell me where I can post it here on Red Square legally without getting into trouble, I will. Thanks and what a way for me to start off here in Red Square.

No harm @Flynhrse . Simply put, the classifieds are for items that are for sale or for trade by the owners of said item or a wanted ad. Thats it. Your post about the auction didn't meet any of those criteria so it was deleted. Since what you wanted to do was make an announcement and give us all a heads-up it should be posted in the general forum under Wheel Horse Tractors, Other Brands or maybe even Non-Tractor Discussion. Mike....

Steve, I might just take you up on that offer. Yeah, they're coming. It may take a while to go through them. One thing I have learned is just because they look good here, doesn't necessary mean they will have the same quality when converted to a calendar. Guys, keep them coming.

So... My nephew gave me this thing the other day and I just got it home. My old 856 is such a good worker (raggedy as it may be) I thought this would make a good additional work horse, since the 856 is busy hauling manure and bulldozing pathways. Now I think its a 64 1054, but I'm not sure. The serial # is 34148. Can anyone tell me what it is.... exactly? It does run and drive ok. It has a different engine, no hood, no belt guard, and some fool welded the hubs on the axles and the steering linkage is a welded mess but it does work fine. The back tires are shot but they hold air long enough. The front tires were new when he parked it. They need resealed but are fine. He says the hydro pump and piston does work, I have not tested it as yet, but I'll probably rip that out and sell it. (if anyone is interested). I'm gonna need a hood and a belt cover...and a new belt. Once I get it running good and test the trans out and make sure its all in good working order, I'll know more what I'm dealing with. I'll replace those back tires last if it seems to be worth the investment. Here, have a look at my new hot mess.

I degreased and then used 000 steel wool with Windex to thoroughly clean my 606 roller. Then I put a couple coats of Matte clear coat on everything. It retained the patina without adding unnatural shine that old paint wouldn't have. Plus. It protects the paint well since it's kept inside.

The glass lens IS the bulb... the element inside is not a serviceable part. Take it to the auto parts store and get the replacement... they're cheap.... well I see you're in CT... so perhaps not quite so cheap!
  23. 3 points
OR ..... the bulbs have a poor ground. If the ground wire for the bulb is attached to the hood there could be no ground. When the ground is the hood, the circuit must pass thru the hood hinge to get back to the battery. That's a bad connection. There needs to be a jumper wire from the hood to the tractor frame. If you're using a test light connect the alligator clip to the ground side of the bulb and probe the (+) side of the bulb. Got light? If not you'll need to fix the ground. If the test light came on you'll need bulbs!

I mow over an acre of smooth flat lawn with the c-160-48" deck. 2nd gear works fine even in thick grass , but 1st gear high range is my favorite gear. I like to watch the clippings flow out of the discharge and the seat time is the only time i get to relax . I usually grin ear to ear the whole time. Over 40 years of memories with my Wheelhorses come back to me every time i drive it.

Flynhrse, I'm not meaning to be hypercritical, but rather constructive, so bear with me. I fully understand you are a newbie and to be honest it takes a while to get the hang of things and the way they operate here, not to mention the navigation of the site itself. I myself stubbed my toes a couple of times as a newbie learning the ropes. It seems it may just be the nature of the beast. When I suggested in your other thread you should create a thread discussing the auction you were referring to, as I did in this one, I'm not sure you interpreted my suggestion correctly. I did not mean to imply or suggest you mix different sales (or topics) by placing it in this thread about the Virginia auction. Your purpose in posting notice of this PA sale would be MUCH BETTER SERVED by starting your own thread about it and using a topic title of your choosing. Your post above does say Xion, PA, yet it has the Auction Zip info for the Xion Crossroads, VA sale.......which in my opinion creates enormous and unnecessary confusion. Maybe its a typo, but I'm not sure. Things get really confusing and overly complicated when disparate information is in thrown into the same pot. Similarly, we have had newbies who created all sorts of threads in various forum areas, but instead of giving each topic its own unique title, they use their RS user name in the title line........no matter what they were inquiring about. Needless to say, things really get confusing when we have the same thread title in numerous sections of the forum. The short of all this and my suggestion to you is, if you truly want to make the PA auction (if in fact there is a PA auction) standout, create your own unique and separate thread in a sub forum which is appropriate to the topic. Otherwise, you need to check your info and your posting here. Hope this helps a little. Welcome to RS, by the way! Regards, Steve

Yeah Lane, what did you make that Sickle guard out of ? Looks nice, I need something on mine. It's not even mounted on a tractor. I have it up in a loft in the barn and every time I go up there I manage to bump a foot into it.

Full throttle high range in 2nd gear. I run 1st gear along the ditch or tricky spots. 3rd gear is too fast for bumps, it doesn't leave a nice cut. My dad mows in 3rd gear usually and the results are poor IMO. If I'm gonna put in the effort to mow, I prefer it to look good when I'm done, not have it look like it needs mowing again.
