WOW!!! Is everyone OK.?? Do you actually mow down that hill?? I think you need a retaining wall and level out the yard. This picture is unreal.

Well, I'm pooped, but I managed to get 8 horses to our annual tractor show today along with my 8N Ford. I got the 953 back together and running. Still need to get my ags put on the rear and make my seat covers, but she's sitting in the field ready for the show with her other stablemates! Below is a teaser pic of all 8 lined up. 953 is trying to hide in there too! More pics to come later.

Well I knocked out some of the main projects on my agenda so I decided to get started on the new 9×24 garden shed addition. Much room for the old man and his attachments Much more ahead on this project this is just a sneak peek!

You'll have to excuse the guys here Gov ... they're good fellas but they don't get out much and it doesn't take much to entertain them. Hope you got your question answered!

Well imagine checking the "new content" posts and seeing these two come up in this order

So this started out as a joke on my things you see on CL thread. I wanted to score the tractor for the nice high back but then thought other wise when I found out it didn't have arm rests & wasn't a power seat. Here's the write up 1969 Raider 12 lawn tractor. 12 hp Koehler engine. Motor runs well. The shifter came out of the transmission so it does not go into gear. The one tire does not hold air in the back. The package deal comes with a mower deck, plow, wheel weights, tire chains, soft side cab, sickle mower which need repaired and a Ariens 2 stage snow blower that has been modified to fit the wheel horse. Great tractor for someone who wants a project to fix up. Asking $700 or best offer for the whole package. Will post more picture soon if I part it out I will be asking more for individual pieces so buy it now at the package price. Guess I should have read the ad more careful other than wondering if the seat reclined.....note the sickle mower?? @Achto points it out whilst we are laughing about the seat! So I give the guy a quick call and he sends me some pics... whoa I says to self, that might be worth checking out even tho it's all in basket. So the next day I go check it out and come home with this.

Any time an engine is going to get a full rebuild the measuring work should be done by the shop that is doing all the machine work - fitting/sizing a rod is a very specific machinist's job as well as fitting/boring the piston bore . If done correctly , the engine will last a very long time with no issues - if not , it won't last long at all and can potentially do a lot of damage or just plain blow up , rendering it junk for even a core . It takes a lot of experience to properly use micrometers and such tools - many novices make simple mistakes that cost a lot of money later . The added expense of having a proper machine shop do the work is sort of money towards a warranty - just make sure they are specifically geared toward rebulding small engines....that is important . I have a shop locally that specializes in rebuilding Kohler engines and stocks a huge supply of factory rebuild parts - no aftermarket parts are allowed in their rebuilds , but you do pay a premium for that although I have yet to ever hear of a failure of one of their rebuilds . You really do get what you pay for .... Sarge

What I've been mowing with since July 5th. I've never much cared for Z turn mowers. They ride ruff, tires leave spinouts in the grass, no reach under bushes.... As I mentioned in TMO's thread about his newfound Farmall Cub, I was mowing my back acre with a 68 IH Cub & around the house & side yard with one of the Horse's. It seemed like it took hours & I wasn't happy with the Cub's cut. I ended up trading it for this Grasshopper 718 with 52" deck. She's seen some use, but still very solid. It rides much better than my in-laws Bad Boy, I like the floating deck & ability to stuff it under bushes. I can actually mow my whole yard, a good portion of my in-laws & neighbors yard in the same amount of time it took to use the Horse & Cub. Plus I enjoy using it.....so much that I just cut my yard for the 5th time since getting it.

Looks like it's either praying or bowling. I would have eat mud if I was on that. I hope nobody was hurt.

I would start with the 9 pin connector, mine kept stopping and the tach was not working. Unplugged it and 2 or the pins were discolored and corroded. Ordered a new one from @rmaynard in the vendor section. Replaced mine and all is good. Just picked up another 520 and was told it has no spark, connector looked the same as my other so I await another 9 pin connector before I proceed.

All I can say is " taking a ride like that I would be cleaning more than mud off my face" Wonder how the tie rods look ?

the information they are looking for is the center to center distance from the crankshaft center line to the wrist pin center line of the connecting rod, best to let them measure it. The reason they need this information is that the K-181 block is the same as the K-161 which has a 1/4" shorter stroke and the K-161 rod is 1/8" longer to compensate for the shorter stroke. As you have already figured out, we are very concerned with shorter strokes and longer Rods! Thanks for giving us an enticing title to comment on!

Note the broken weldment.... the only thing wrong and should be fairly easy to repro. Couple of tight idlers and no grass bar but again horse play. Bonus.... front attachamatic and a bolt & washer for a deck blade ...extra pully too?!?!? Jeepers cats just noticed the front axle pin in my pic... another bonus. Gotta love it when implements come in a plastic tote of parts! Extra blade ... broke but fixable and worth the extra cutters.

Thanks! I have used Rustoleum regal red on our tractors. Seems to be the closest rattle can match. I think Farmall red is very comparable. The only trouble I've had with rattle cans is they are so dependent on the temp and humidity. I painted part of the 953 one morning with great results. Painted the hood another with more humidity and got a lot duller finish. Good thing is that you can cut and buff the rustoleum with good results if you are very careful. Attached is a pic of the 953 hood after a cut and buff job. You can see the reflection of the steering wheel and clouds.

That is a super cool little tractor and will look totalleee awesome with a set of 23x8.50-12 AG's or a set of 23x10.50-12's if you really want a more radical look! If if you are plowing in soft (light) soil, weights aren't a big deal. However, if you want to plow at a large plow day in farmers fields like at Bluniers, you need weight--and lots of it! Some guys bring an extra 100 with them and they aren't likely to need as much I'm an average sized guy and I run about 175lbs on the back of GhostRider and for the big plow days, I've actually thought about adding a little more... (My six year old son at the helm of GhostRider! Kids love plowing!). The other thing you find out quickly if ground conditions are tough, Horses are notoriously light in the front. As you can see in the pic, my Uncle Roger helped me make a bracket to add about 65# to the quick attach. That helped my tractor a lot, before that I felt like I was riding a bucking bronc! Another very important piece if you are going to do serious plowing on a is a good (think new factory--if you can get one) drive belt. You have to keep that power getting from the motor to the rear end and that is your only link. Cubs, JD's and a host of other tractors have driveshafts to accomplish this--on a horse, this is key! From this pic, you can see that furrow angle that @WHX11 is talking about. That is why you want to make preliminary adjustments with your plow on blocks on the left side only because your right tires are down in the furrow. If you really get into plowing, I suggest adding a rear led plow light. They don't have to be expensive but they are important if you want to do any "night plowing". If the conditions are right, night plowing is really fun. However, you need to have lights to see where you are going, and what the plow is doing... LED is a nice choice since it doesn't draw very much electricity. Remember: you can plow with a tractor and a furrow plow and turn over a garden easily. However, if you want to have the best experience at a big plow day, these helpful hints above, are some of the things that I've learned over the years of doing it myself. I wish you were closer to us, I'd invite you to come up to my Uncles Farm day in about 3 weeks. You could get a lot of seat time on any of my rigs and get a feel for it!

BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR THE BIRTHDAY WISHES 65 was a real milestone birthday for me, it was a good day. Wife, kids, family, close friends make it so. Thanks once again my wheel horse / red square comrades. Till next year, the good lord willing and the creek don't rise. Glenn

Well I knocked out some of the main projects on my agenda so I decided to get started on the new 9×24 garden shed addition. Much room for the old man and his attachments Much more ahead on this project this is just a sneak peek! It may appear that the addition is crooked by looking at the sidewalk but that's just the way the barn was erected everything is true level and square, it drives me nuts that it's not square with the fence line and house!

On my way back from a WH sickle bar score I noticed this guy sitting at the side of the road. Kind of a neat little tractor and if seller was around woulda asked what he was askin just for grins. Probably too much as it looked like it was there awhile...... tires were rotted off! Did look to be savable tho.

This reminds me a little of a mower incident in my parents neighborhood when I was growing up. My parents home is on a river with a high bank behind all the homes adjacent to them along the river. A guy took a trip down the bank & into the river on a JD riding mower years ago. That must've been an exciting ride.

Yes finding that good machine shop is always a problem. Seems no one wants to do small engines anymore. @stevasaurus has one near him (north IL) that he swears by and has good prices but you would have send it out which probably isn't too cheap..... unless you get the right flat rate box? Just thinkin out loud there.

1054 is a 10hp thus the 10 in 1054. I have one in pieces that I haven't got to yet . I don't know if I'll ever get started on it. so I might try to sell it.
  36. 3 points
Well I got the 1045 out today after fixing the lift cable so it would hold the plow, also adjust the belt so it would grab better, but now clutch won't go in far enough to let me shift without grinding the gears. I do believe I know how to fix that just don't have time tonight. But I did get it out for a few picture with the plow. Hoping I can have ags and maybe some weights on it soon so I can go to plow days!

From your picture it certainly looks to be nice - and original ! We can see the seat, head lights and probably the grille, and start/gen belt cover are still there There are usually at least some - or all - of these missing (they were on mine!) Yeah the 1054/953 is pretty much in a class by themselves with some peculiarities (hah, I guess ALL of the horses have a few of those!)

Pretty much tore down. Now just got to check everything over and decide what to do with it exactly. Overall it was good for the price. But theres a lot of hack jobwork done to it. I'm getting the motor checked for cracks and the bore measured tomorrow.

.... but I definitely wasn't going to be the first to respond about the title either .
  42. 3 points
Ha ha! Your post title is funny! Not even gonna go there. You will need a rod that fits your crank. If you have the crankshaft turned/reground undersized then you need the appropriate size rod, e.g. .010 under. The length will be the same.

Recently "my" wally world razed the Murphy gas station and came back with a much more updated facility. The pumps are set up to dispense the 3 'regular' fuels, Diesel, and ethanol free fuel. The ethanol free is typically 50cents higher, so with Murphys already low fuel prices the cost isnt bad at all (couple days ago was $2.49) One problem tho is that its always BUSY!
  44. 2 points
Sounds like you have the host of electrical problems 520 are known for. Get the manuals for it with wiring diagrams out of the files section. You will need them. Also do a search on 520 electrical, you will find all kinds of problems guys have had and the fixes. Do start looking at the 9 pin and fuse block first. Bob @rmaynard guy is looking for a 9 pin... he'll be around Chuck ...give him a bit he's old!

So is this a 10 HP tractor or what? I always thought they were and the engine on this looks original.

The big twin K-532 carb kit is easy to source and the carb is about as simple as they come - just be careful with the screws for the air cleaner mounting neck (adapter) , don't strip those holes out like someone did on my K482 ...lol . The kit should be nearly identical to the K341 1" Kohler carb if I remember correctly - a lot of good implement/small equipment dealers stock either the Kohler or Stens kits , my Green dealer locally has them on the shelf for their own shop . About 50 miles away is a neat old-school dealer that sold several L&G brands that stocks Kohler parts like no one else and even has all the old books on the counter to find the correct part numbers for vintage equipment - any time I'm over that way I stop by and stock up on carb kits and small parts - usually to tune of over $100 worth but nice to have on hand as I work on a lot of stuff outside of my own . The fuel line - I've been using the semi-transparent blue Polyurethane from Parts Unlimited , originally sourced 25' length bags from a local Harley shop - they swear by the stuff . Now I see that they have changed it's ratings to no more than 10% Ethanol - which tells me they've ran into issues . If you do not have a source for non-ethanol fuel locally , I would be very careful about checking your lines occasionally to prevent any surprises . I see now even the aircraft guys are using the stuff as most say the yellow Tygon is not totally compatible and can start to break down - the arguments continue on this subject in all the racing/aircraft/small engine and mechanic's forums . Here's the Parts Unlimited link - most all the WH stuff is 1/4" line sizing . Part number for the 1/4" line is 0706-0106 - $17.95 per 25' roll . Glad I looked at my stock - I'm nearly out again and will order both sizes I use in 100' rolls this time . http://www.parts-unlimited.com/products/?productId=432898 Aircraft Spruce's Bing fuel line , not cheap but anything that flies...well you get the idea - http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/bingfuel.php This whole ethanol thing has created some really ugly problems , both in our economy as especially small and even large engines . I've had to replace more carburetors than I care to think about from the stuff eating the pot cast aluminum bodies internally - when I still worked on the Webers I had to source a new set of 40DCNF's for a guy with a 308 Ferrari . That fuel usage cost him over $2,000 in parts alone and he had to pay another shop to replace the lines in the car , clean the tank and set up the carbs - he was angry about that bill for quite awhile . The Public isn't being informed of the damage the stuff will do to an engine over time and you can ask any mechanic that works on anything fueled by gasoline - it's a very sore subject and most are sick of dealing with it . Many stations/networks have been routinely caught putting far too much ethanol in the pump gas - some as high as 18% and had some large fines levied by Illinois . This was caught by local mechanics getting flooded with engine problems and fuel systems rotted out even on newer vehicles . Until the Public becomes educated enough to fight the big Farm and Oil Industry lobby the stuff isn't going away and they have lobbied for some time now to increase the level content up to 15% - which would be even worse . Point is - might want to have a discussion with your local station owners , see if they are willing to start selling the non-ethanol fuel - that's how myself and several others got the Phillips station to carry the 91 octane pure . Got a little further today. I got the motor finished up, foot rests on, wheels primed and painted (well, fronts anyway - just primed the rears as I hope to get to mount the ags I ordered last week mounted), and the grille and hood mounted. Hope to have it finished by Wed. I've actually got 2 GT14s. One is all original and the other is powered by a 13.5 horse predator. Both transmissions are in great shape. Below is a picture of my wife riding the original GT14 and Emory beside her on his lawn ranger.
