So the guy that picks up our HVAC scrap & tear outs has this yard. Mostly scrap stuff but quite a few LGT's so I decided to browse the other day. This lot is only 50 yards wide but goes back quite deep. The farther back one goes the older the GT's are. Lots and lots of vertical shaft stuff but some have rims & whatnot that could be used on our horses. I had already rescued two newer vert. Toro branded tractors for parts. Found this little guy...fenders are immaculate and transmission shifts. Anyone care to PI it? Tom @Shynon thinks its a 502. This was in there as well, thought the engine might be savable, quite the cool tractor as well. Note the ear on the carb... oh well carbs can be had seat looked real familiar More to come as I explore further...this is like being on a treasure hunt as I have a feeling there is more horse/Kohler stuff under huge piles of scrap. Problem is getting to it. Nettles are wicked bad and most stuff has trees growing through it! It is thought the base pan on the 321 might be wrong for a horse but they can be swapped too.

Yeah, I decided to pass after hearing from you guys here and on another site. I will wait until I find the right one....

Nice but it is not a 502 or a 61/62...it's got the lift adjustable star wheel. That would make it a 1963.

So between my boss being a dink, and my step daughter being in hospital with my ol lady, my head has been going in circles and going nuts. So I worked til 9 tonight and told myself I was gonna put on my sickle bar assembly after work. So I did. Lemme tell ya, it definately helped my mind. I liked the end result. Got a little tweeking to do, but it's all on. Haven't ran it to see if it works yet, but I will soon.

G-Sarge...welcome to Red Square. The members above have given you their honest opinion...and here is why. I don't see the hi/low shift lever in those pictures, which tells me it is a 3 or 4 speed. It was painted with a mop (or just as bad) and would take tons of work to get it back to health...and that is what this site is about. It would help if you took the chip off your shoulder and see if it at least ran. I would say it is worth next to nothing without knowing if it runs. It may be worth $100 if it does run. Check the oil in the trans and see if it has water in it. You just come in here with a real piece of junk and expect honest opinions, and then get your feathers ruffled when you get honest opinions. Sorry, maybe step back and try again sir.

I just picked up this wheel horse for $100, I know it doesn't have the original engine, but I'm not sure what model the tractor is. I originally was under the impression that is was an 854 but it doesn't appear to be that.if anyone has an idea of the model I would like to know.
  8. 4 points
That Tractor looks to me to be very VALUABLE The paint job is like a Picaso To the right NASCAR Dale JR. FAN you could probably get upwards of $150.00 for it.
  9. 3 points
So, now that I have no idea what the original transmission was, is there any way to know what the actual model number and year is? I'll sell you the bowtie for $100.00, and you can have the tractor for free!
  10. 3 points
    It may have been a 1971 800 Special model 1-0150 or a 1974 A-90 Special model 2-4300. Garry

I'm not trying to talk you out of that, but I hope you are getting it for not much more then free. You will be putting quite a bit of money back into it...and in the end...it is still a vertical shaft horse. It is never going to be worth or be able to do what a horizontal shaft horse will do. It also looks like it has been parted out to a point, and I don't think it is going to be easy finding parts for that style. If that horse is what you are looking for and you know what you are getting into...and accept the challenge, then you are going to save a horse. We can help as much as possible and we would surely like to see how you progress. Looks like they were made from 1980 to 1984...maybe later. They were either a 5 speed manual (Peerless) or an automatic (Eaton). They used a 16hp Briggs for power. We can nail it down if you find a model #...it would look something like 02-16BE01 or 02-16BP04. The "B" is for Briggs...the "E" or "P" is for Eaton or Peerless. I'd be more inclined to walk away if the transmission is the Eaton automatic because...it may be a long time before you find out if the auto is any good.

Sorry for taking your post off on a tangent Dew but please understand our problem, most of us would consider our first born as a good swap on a fair but we are really not that way and we know about being on a budget. We just have a tendency to get carried away on having multiple horses! I think Mike @Sparky hit it first with a C-series in the 12 to 16 HP black hood category would be a good fit but I would also have a stout B series as a back....oops here we go again! It really boils down on the hydro or manual thing and what you think you will be using it for most? Tilling ...manual, mowing or blowing hydro...pushing- manual. The compromises are endless and we guess that's why tractors were offered in all the configs they were. Looking at your dimensions I would say you have a larger garden than driveway which is fine so I would go with a manual and deal with shifting when on the driveway with snow. Always more trouble free than a hydro and always much more stouter when push comes to shove. Either way we'd be here to help if (God forbid) it should break!

Howdy gentlemen, I am the new owner of a c175. It came with snow blade, 48in deck and wheel weights. It needs all new belts and a few bearings on the deck. Only numbers I have found are on the engine and the deck. I have a picture of number on engine, deck has 3018 on a tag center rear of deck. I have searched for the serial number and cannot find it. I'm lookin for a manual or a good parts list to get her ready for mowing season. Any and all information is greatly appreciated. Keith

Well guys I'm buying a tractor off a guy and I had to buy this C-175 also, but being it has no engine I really have no need for it, I wanted you guys to help me decide if I should sell it whole or part it out? I won't have them til next week..

the 314-H that i talked about above, I bought and brought it home and put it in the shed,I drove it in by the way, when I park one with the the lever I always pull the lever up. I guess it's from my days of driving dad's 73 12 AUTO up through my first C120 AUTO . anyways I degress, the next day I went out to the shed to start tractor and when I pushed the lever down the tractor would not move. A moment of panic set in thinking that a tractor I just paid all of this money for, has a broken trans or something horrible just happened. so then I started to check it out and found the belt had broken. I came to the conclusion that when I released the lever and the idler pulley hit the belt the poor old belt could hold up and snapped. I don't think the previous owner ever used the lever. It scared the hell out of me for a few seconds anyways eric j

Now wait just a cotton picken minute here! I have not seen a photo shoot of the tractor yet! Sides Front Rear all around. How much did you pay for it? How many Hours on the tractor? I wouldn't be cobbling up a perfectly good tractor with a Kohler. I love my Kohler's too don't get me wrong but why take the easy way out doesn't anyone do anything right anymore? Look inside a Kohler plastic oil pump gears stamped Aluminum Onan Cast Iron Oil Pump Steel Gears. You get what you pay for. ~Duke

leave the old piston in, help stop anything from getting to the crankcase. pull the valves and put a plate over the intake, don't know how it would work but, I've seen tractors running on one cylinder and the owner never new it lost a cylinder till I pointed it out. and they didn't run half bad. maybe in my spare time lol I could take one of my blown motors that I picked up for parts and try it eric j

Hello everyone, I have read that I have seen photos on the internet about Wheel horse tricycle, someone has transformed a normal model to a tricycle? I would like to see tips for my 702.

Partial to Black Hoods, so my vote goes with @varosd. If it rolls good, put an engine in it and use it...

@G-Sarge to I am sorry if your 1st experience here wasn't as rewarding as you may have expected. The people on here really are friendly and very helpful. A couple of questions that really rub most of us raw are, and in no particular order: What color to paint my Wheel Horse? What color are the wheels? What is this tractor worth? What oil is used on the hydros? And on and on and on.... We have a very good "search" function that most fail to see or use and just about every question that has been asked 1 to 1000 times has been answered! Our "manuals" section is also very good and can help someone wanting to make repairs or if buying something, help you decide what might be missing on your "prospective" purchase. I hope you find a good Wheel Horse to work and play with and visit us often.

would be easy (maybe) to slap a HF or Briggs or Honda twin cylinder in there and go. is the Eaton good?

    Don't think it is a C-120, looks to have a 4 speed transmission don't see a high/low shiftier.

to the pro's on here - has the rear-end/hitch been modified? That doesn't look like a WH set up to me - I think your best bet for the money would be to part it out but that's just my opinion.

I have 4 Charger/Electros. (Electros were a fancier Charger) They are excellent tractors. Two of mine just cleaned up after a record snowfall (26-28 inches) one plow one with a blower.. Not bad for 45+year old machines. Somethings to look for.. If it is running get it warmed up then put it up against an immovable object and see if will dig holes with the rear wheels. Sundstrand hydros are excellent units if maintained...They do not like debris on the hydro system. The parking brakes are internal and if people used them to stop the tractor they get ground down releasing metal shavings that can cause issues. There are several thread here about how to renovator a worn sundstrand hdro if you do not mind a project. If it doesn't run you can't really test the hydro and the value declines. Most of them came with Kohler 12 hp engines which are very realiabel and easy to get parts for. One exception is the ignition system used on some models was an early electronic ignition (called Breakerless). If it fails it is very expensive to get triggers and coils. You can however fairly easily replace it with a battery/ points system. Charger 10s came with Tecumseh 10 hp motors. They also used a solid state ignition system that is also very expensive to fix. A lot of people do not like the Techys...i am very happy with mine.

I would say 100-150 tops, IMO.

I didn't mean to be condescending sorry. I was expressing my opinion which is part of what you asked for.. Those factors limit the value, to me anyway. .

Being a retired racer/puller to me means the engine is probably shot and the tranny abused.

I had thought that too Terry & the deck is buried under grass behind it. Have to see once I dig it out which is gonna be a real job! Yah...had to go get some stuff that wasn't supposed to get scrapped ... so as long as I was there! My heart did miss a beat when I saw the horse but then sank when a saw the front legs had been cut off and also the seat spring torched. .... sorry no Mclean's that I saw ....yet!

I got the wheel horse for $100, not sure the model I thought it was an 854 but now I'm not so sure. It's in pretty good condition just doesn't have the original engine but still a great buy.

Happy Birthday! Now go out and buy yourself [and us too] the pleasure of being of being a supporter. If cash is tight, 20 dollars can be had just by giving up a few snacks or cups of coffee at work.I still have my Boy Scout knife that I scrimped and saved by doing without 5 or 6 school lunches back in the day when lunch cost 35 cents. When i ran out of picture space here, i found a way to save up the $20 by cutting back other places. You do nice work, but when you delete pictures to make room for more, a little kitten dies somewhere , just like your dead pictures

Had the exact same problem on my 68 Charger 12. Changed out the sparkplug and fires up every time now. Spark plug in it was new, so tried everything else first. I was using an inline spark plug tester, but that only shows power to the plug, not the spark the plug is getting.

Well just to nip this in the BUD I sent the Ebay Seller a message advising him in advance what I have found out and what I expect. I encluded a picture that WVHillbilly520H included and you can see his reply. Documentation is better than conversation in this case voicing my concerns well before I get the product gives Ebay documentation to go on. As you can see by the Auction they are covered by EBAY PROTECTION. If they are not 10.5" Wide back in the box they go and I will recieve my MOOLA BACK! (PERIOD......) Jeff I appreciate your work on this. I will Ck into the OTR's Thanks again ~DUKE

Brilliant! I thought I would get an answer on here. thanks for the help, and so quikly. It was a bit dark, time I got it back together but here are some pic's of work in progress. turned out to have been some previus patching done! so I cut that out also. just a little patch was needed to the left and a big chunk cut out on the right! shaped up some replacement patches. then welded them in. dress down the welds! treated the rest with Fertan rust converter (brilliant stuff) Ready for painting. I am going to use a two pack epoxy paint (another brilliant product) on the under side. and a red metal coat on top. the suppliers recon they can match the wheel horse colour... if they can match it ok I may restore the whole thing next winter. underside with the fertan treatment.
