On the second weekend in a row I went to Iowa to pick up some NOS implements. I woke up in the morning on Saturday and saw a post for NOS implements. My son had two varsity high school baseball games on Saturday so I was a little bummed I couldn't leave right away. I told myself I would call them on my way home from the games but figured they would be long gone....NOPE. I got home and left immediately for the 3.5 hour drive. Included are 2 NOS 37" side discharge decks, 1 NOS 48" dozer blade, 1 NOS cultivator set, and 1 NOS row planter. Never been assembled....this stuff is awesome!!!! I'll probably sell at least one of the decks, but will probably keep the other stuff unless I get an offer I couldn't refuse. The stuff is super dusty but wipes off easily.

The 654s being round hoods are probably the most sought after of the group, though all are very collectible. I understand that the Nebraska authorities are watching for you at the state line, they hang horse rustlers there!

Changed them over from a green machine to my Bronco today. The 10.50's fit well on the 8.5 WH rims. Very cool, I like them a lot!Need to put the wheel weights back on.

Got the C-141 out to "help" grade out the new carport today. Borrowed a good friend's JD loader with rear box blade to do most of the work & was using the to clean it up. Was working great until I ran the 141 out of gas, so I thought hey, perfect photo op. & a couple more when I got done, have ten yards of gravel coming in the morning so I'll get to use the grader blade tomorrow. Sorry about the last pic, but gotta give some credit where credit is due... Will have some more pics of the progress tomorrow night.

Made 2 trips to Iowa on two consecutive weekends. First trip I bought 6 tractors... Qty (2) 654's 312-8 Commando 8 1267 C-81 8 speed I couldn't get the C-81 loaded so I'll have to go back and pick it up later. Can you tell me a little about the 654, Commando 8, and the 1267 like how rare or desirable are they, what (if any) other machines do they share parts with.

Great project! On my to-do list.....someday. Used stone then topped with road blacktop millings. Used the Horse blade, another mid-mount grader blade, roller. Then had Grandsons using an asphalt packer. Those millings pack like the road surface.

IMO the best all around machine is a 312-8

If it's a black hood you want then the C-165 would be the best choice. I think the 8 speed is the preferred tranny for tilling, I've read that the tiller will push the hydro's. The C-175 might have a bit more power than the 16 single but the Kohler 17 twins used then are not great motors. Mike....

No they do not need to be aligned or anything just bolt them up flat side down. BTW

I had a guy contact me wanting to sell his Massey ferguson 16, said it runs good but electric clutch was acting up so he parked it. Deck works good and has newer belt, Always wanted to add a Massey to the collection and was wondering if anyone could give opinions on what it may be worth. I have an idea myself..

or a 314-8, You'll have to excuse Sparkeye as it seems he likes to go for the heavy hitters right off the bat...good man Sparkeye! .... Eight speed would be great for tilling & ground engagements but the H is the cats meow for pushing snow or blowing. Beast advice is get a couple of ... for any occasion...got all the bases covered. Sorry Dew but you got a double edged sword ther what with all our addictions. That's no fair Tank you posted before I did ....you obviously got a problem!

I plan on it. as soon as one part sells I'm gonna take whole tractor apart. And will let you guys know first how it looks in there!

After the rear tire swap. Now gotta order 12 in wide turfs for it

To test the hydro, I would chain the tractor hitch to a tree. Remove the belt guard. Start the engine and engage the hydro. Then slowly move the motion lever forward. A good working tractor will spin the tires. If this doesn't happen, there are many reasons. 1. The belt may be slipping on the PTO or hydro drive pulley. 2. The belt may be turning the hydro pulley but the pulley is slipping on the shaft due to a sheared key. Look at the center of the pulley and make sure they are spinning at the same RPM. 3. hydro axles may be turning, bot one of them may be slipping in the hub due to a sheared key. Look at the center of each hub and make sure one of them is not spinning in the hub. Check both of them as only one needs to be sheared. If the tractor does spin the tires, but at a slow speed, there is probably a problem with the motion control lever linkage and / or cam. If the hydro input shaft is turning at the correct RPM and neither axle is turning, there is probably a problem inside the hydro.

Also don't forget to change out the winter air in your tires to summer air, and be sure you properly recycle the winter air.

I have noticed that sellers of MF seem to think they are worth a lot of money. Presuming the electric clutch is the same as a there is a lot of good information on here to help you repair that.
  17. 3 points
Yeah, let's hope it is not in the hydro. Some possibilities that would cause noise and slow speed are, Llike Adam said, the drive belt. the idler pulley, the key in the hydro drive pulley. Pull the belt guard off and check these things . The motion cam could also cause the slow speed problem, but not the noise. Do you have the noise when the PTO is not engaged?

C-85 has the best answer I think. Rounded ends are the secret. Guess that is why Band-aids have rounded ends!

When I was a kid back in the mid/late 60's my brother and I mowed a few local cemeteries and Dad bought this 14" push mower that we used to trim around head stones. I ended up with it when Dad passed and used it to trim my yard once in a while until the engine gave up, it's been just sitting in the shed for the last few decades. Now that I'm retired I'm back to mowing one of those cemeterys so I decided to fix this old friend up and use it again, mowing the same grass I mowed with it almost 50 years ago. A new engine, a set of wheels and a little paint and it's good to go.

Yeah Ed. I've got it. It's included free of charge with every set of chrome plated muffler bearings.

Looks like a fun project with the right tractors. are you getting a crushed stone? Or something else. Enjoy.

Here is a picture I took when the resto was almost done. I have since installed the proper seat pan and a genuine RM324 mover deck. I enjoyed every minute of the restore. My Dad bought this same tractor used in 1966, and it was the tractor I grew up on. Thus, the sentimental value.

Well on the way home tonight I got to thinking... I have another tractor I'm gonna be buying with money gettin slim... I also have been wanting to give my daughters C-81 a wider/tougher look... sooo... I got thinking of the 520.. and how expensive the Onan can be especially this one needed some work.. well I didn't want to part it out until I thought I could put the wider rear wheels on the C-81 and maybe the front axle to give it a bigger wider stance. So I may part the rest of the 520 or sell it as a whole once I'm done swapping this stuff over. On to step one!

Looks fantastic, I just hope she doesn't get "cranky" for calling her an A-81 in your tractor list... She might run over your foot with her new wide tires.

I am suffering from Wheel Horse Addiction (WHA). Since the mid 70's! That's one of my sons, he now has WHA too. Now Grandsons are also infected with WHA. My first Horse, 8 hp, turned a lot of earth. My neighbors couldn't believe how well the Horse performed! One neighbor once pulled me aside, "When you're out, your boys race the tractors down the road." I replied, "So?" When I got home, snow plowed, grasses mowed, Parker (or Jackson) sweeper cleaned, lawn dethatched, Horses always groomed. The boys chores and the Ms. too!

I prefer my Stallions! Favorite Horses for wo....wo.....WORK? 414-8, 416-8 and my 520-8 can do-it-all! I think my Work Horse can handle the tasks too. 40+ years ago I had an 8 hp 3-speed that also did it all. A Horse is a Horse of course!

Ed, I used the same bearing retainers that have grease zerks and same style bearings as used for the impeller, but the bearing I.D. is 7/8" vs 3/4", the retainers are 3 bolt vs the 4 Bolt bushing retainer I used the top hole then drilled the other 2 using the retainer as a template, also had to fabricate a 1/4" spacer for the bearing to clear the housing, I got the idea from others threads on here (Dukes snow chucker build) that may actually have more in depth info, also the rubber impeller paddles I got from a kit on eBay, I figured since I had to rebuild it might as well go all in, sorry I don't have the specifics as I have paperwork scattered throughout the house and toolbox, but to me it was well worth the extra investment of time and money, Jeff.

if your going to part it out might as well pull the motor and flip it over and pull the oil pan off and see what happened. it does sound like a broken rod. but inquiring minds want to know lo l eric j

Id say a 502 or 702....but doesn't look like it has the original motor...

With a hydro you will be constantly trying to regulate speed with little success.

Duke, I have no experience with the Deestone brand others on here have stated not only narrower width but shorter height than what they are designated as, Those OTR LAWN TRAC R1 I mentioned above, are described as 10.85" section width and 22.8" tall like the Carlisle, I would assume that once mounted the tires should "balloon" a small amount, I went with the Nanco tires because before I bought the anniversary 520 new in 1998 I bought a pair new for my old CC 106, I kept them put them on my dad's CC 1200 and 19 years they are still not weather checked or dry rotted (but he never mowed with it only gardening, snow removal, and firewood gathering) so that may have something to do with it, also my F.I.L. has a Roper setting out his barn with bought new 12 year old Carlisle AGs that are dry rotted severely but was a mower only, and my used Nankangs were cracked before I ever mounted them but I run tubes with fluid so that wasn't an issue, so I did a little research with pics for everyone to scour over, hope this helps out, Jeff.

Brilliant! I thought I would get an answer on here. thanks for the help, and so quikly. It was a bit dark, time I got it back together but here are some pic's of work in progress. turned out to have been some previus patching done! so I cut that out also. just a little patch was needed to the left and a big chunk cut out on the right! shaped up some replacement patches. then welded them in. dress down the welds! treated the rest with Fertan rust converter (brilliant stuff) Ready for painting. I am going to use a two pack epoxy paint (another brilliant product) on the under side. and a red metal coat on top. the suppliers recon they can match the wheel horse colour... if they can match it ok I may restore the whole thing next winter. underside with the fertan treatment.

Carlisle super lugs 23x10.5x12. If I did the rear wheels then I would have to do the front, then Armor All the tires, then paint the tins, then the tractor would look so good I'd have to lose weight so I would look as good as it (never happen!). It's a vicious cycle.

Alignment was only an issue with the older gear drive decks...they would hit each other.

That wouldn't sell very well here in Florida. It's quite obvious that very few cars even have turn signals.

In your defense Tom..... Forgive him he just doesn't get it..... That the only use for anything IH YELLOW is dead weight! Next to that HY-2?? I hear tell those 12inchers can get awfully heavy at the end of a run!

It sold for 485. I am glad that I didn't go for it. I did purchase two WH hub caps, two back tires with rims, and one front tire with a rim for $45.

Buy 'em both, then figure out which you like the best.

Here's my confession for the day. This past Sunday afternoon I went out to the shed to use the B-80 to do a little yard cleanup, which has sat there neglected all winter with a 3 year old battery in it. I didn't expect it to start, so I stuck the key in the ignition and turned it to check, and it didn't turn over. So I pushed it to the house (about 25 yards, and mostly downhill) where I have an AC outlet to jump start it with the boost on my battery charger. Hooked 'er up and jumped on the tractor to crank it over, when it dawned on me that the clutch needs to be depressed to start it (interlock switch, ya know). So I gave it a try and she fired right up without even turning on the booster! I could see in my mind Bugs Bunny standing there.

Good catch Jim Make sure you get accurate volumes ...about 48 ounces or 3.333333333 12oz EMPTY beer cans. Socks got holes in them today so used a calculator on that one!

They're as wide if not wider than the original DICOs that came on them new, when I get home from work I'll run a tape across them with a pic, Nankang tires (pictured) on my anniversary I bought used 10 years ago are being replaced as well as a pair of original DICOs on the low hour 520 when it warms up, Jeff.

I have always heard,,, there is no replacement for displacement. Your gonna lose 20% of your hp straight away and although I don't remember the numbers exactly your gonna give up quite a bit of displacement going to a K341. This last snow storm brought 24" to my area and the K341 in the 16 Auto with the 42" single stage didn't want anymore,,, I was crawling as slow as I could to make the first pass, it was tough going. I have used the blower on a few whimpy 10/12" storms and was able to attain near full speed from the hydro without over working the engine. I saw a vid of someone who put a K301 in a 520, so it can be done but a blower of that size in deep snow might need all the power that big Onan can put out. Personally I have never had much long term luck with any older twin cylinder air cooled engine. So far so good (7yrs) with the twin cylinder Kawasaki I have in the green and yellow abomination I use to cut the grass though.

Manny, the belt drive for a sickle bar mower is sort of a sideways mule drive attached to the mower. I'll see if I can find a picture and post it.

If it starts buy it!!!!! That is a deal. if it doesn't start then does the engine turn over?? Does the tranny shift into gears?? If yes then still buy it. Frozen engine offer $75...still a good deal.

What I dug up about GL5 gear lube below, and as far as the auger suspended I believe if one does the bearing upgrade like I have vs the original bushings this helps tremendously and then add Kurt's mod also would be sufficient as the auger turns half speed of the impeller and single stage units, as I also did the rubber paddles extensions on the impeller and and solid "stone deflector" to help push the snow up and out of the chute, Jeff.
