Traded a cub cadet for these two yesterday. The rj58 is all complete and runs. The guy said the seat cover was the original to. The rj35 has seen some neglect, but think the cast iron steering wheel is pretty neat.

Is interesting to see all the fancy rigs , 2 stage , Cabs lights etc 20 hp units.. Some of it looks to be overkill for the driveways involved. But these two simple old horses no cabs stock lights, a blade and short chute single stage blower did all this. Mind you the snow was much deeper on Wednesday (26 inches). I just took these. They cleared from the road all the way down to the barn with the snow on the roof and in front of the workshop. still had to work today as the snow slid of the workshop roof. Only real issues were the belt broke on the blower, I had to tight up the PTO clutch. and the hydro lift handle fell of the plow tractor (cotter pin failure)

Washing wheel horse's that's what! Lol they actually begged me to scrub the grime off the 520! Doing a great job I might add! Haha

I just got back from saving this gem from the scrap metal heap. I won't start working on it until it's a bit warmer out but it seems all there and the engine is free. Pretty nice score for $25.

It is with a heavy heart I write this post, and I was undecided which forum to use. I decided to use this one hoping it may help prevent another tragic accident. I am not looking for sympathy and I will not relate details. Last week I lost a friend and neighbor in a tragic accident. He was the active 79 year old owner/ operator of a one man excavating business that would do anything for anyone at any time. He was similar to many on this forum, A devout Christian, Sunday School teacher, Inventor, and capable of building anything that he wanted or needed. Including a flying machine, a snowmobile, and was presently building a snow thrower for his skid steer. He made several visits to my shop recently collecting information from my throwers. He will be missed by me and hundreds of others in Southern York Co. Pa. Rest peacefully my friend. For all my friends on Red Square, Please use care and respect when working around flammables in your shops.

So the C-121 I picked up a few weeks ago has patiently been waiting for some attention. First order of business was to check out the drive belt idler pulley ( it's a wee-bit loud) . Good grief!! How long do ya think it was going bad!! Second thing was to get rid of the plastic wheel weights.....check out the mouse nest that was inside a rear rim ....can you image how the mouse felt after going round and round for an hour while the tractor operator mowed their lawn! Mike....

My Pal Ray Baker called me today. He said he was digging out from the 2' of snow in SHENANDOAH, PA and he got to thinking of the King of Snow Chuckers! Its always nice to catch up with Tractor Bud's. Since I am into doing a Ark 500 Loader Project Ray sent me more Pictures of his and asked me to post them for him here on Red Square. Ray Said " Duke could post a couple of my tractor pics on Redsquare and let them know I'm still alive. See Ya, Ray" So here we go Ray;s GT14 and Ark 500 LOADER This was purchased from his Bosses Wife after he passed away last year Ray worked for many many years for him and they were good friends. ~Duke

May you rest in peace ; ST. LOUIS, MO — Chuck Berry, the rock `n’ roll founder who defined its joy and rebellion in “Johnny B. Goode” and other classics, has died in St. Charles County, Missouri, west of St. Louis. He was 90. St. Charles county police say they responded to a medical emergency Saturday afternoon and found Berry unresponsive. He could not be revived and was pronounced dead. Berry hit the Top 10 in 1955 with “Maybellene” and went on to influence generations of musicians. Among his other hits were “Johnny B. Goode” and “Roll Over Beethoven.”

Chapter 6, Subsection 12, Paragraph 3, Line 4 of the Supporter's Manual clearly states that it is a Capital Crime to desecrate a with Green, Yellow, Blue, Orange or Beige Paint unless said paint was placed originally by the Ponds on said . Addendum 3.2(3) of said manual clearly states that this prohibition extends to all attachments, implements, tools or other "add-ons", including any device commonly referred to as a trailer...(Clothing color of the operator is partially exempt from this prohibition, if said clothing was purchased unwittingly by the spouse of said operator and given as a gift to said operator). Sorry...Rules are rules... Nice Trailer! Regal Red will fix it!

Nah, take the time to fix it right. Overlay the stud with Gorilla Tape and apply a big gob of cup grease.

Balanced a few more parts on the bench. Need to get the drop box designed next. I've picked up an earlier 3 speed transmission and the brake shaft runs the opposite way and is 3 times slower. Might have to look for a later one. (12:1 ratio)

Just picked these two up this afternoon. A few fixed wires, carb cleaning, couple fresh batteries and they're up and running. 1973 8 4speed and 1975 b100 8speed....900 for the pair.

When it comes to GT's they all have their features that make them desirable in one way or another. I grew up with Cub Cadets, they are quality tractors with some very good features. Bolens had their tube frames and shaft drive implements, Wheel Horse with their strong frame, trans and serviceability, John Deere's had their name & green paint. One thing you'll notice is that with all the brands of tractors, you'll only see a few different engines. I am a Kohler engine fan, so I tend to lean towards tractors that have a Kohler in them.

I made a lil more progress this weekend. For the final drive to the rear wheels i need to have a pulley and sprocket on the same hub. To accomplish this I purchased a W weld on hub (1 5/8 o.d.) with a 1/2" bore to fit the 8" pulley. I chose 1/2" bore because I needed to bore it to 3/4" and did not want the key way. I bored the hole and then turned the back side of the hub to a V hub size (1 1/8") to fit the sprocket needed to drive the wheel. We all like action shots, so I'll start there. An original hub next to the first one that I turned to fit my needs. The reason for the step? I wanted clearance for the chain side plates and a positive stop for the sprocket when I pressed it on. I then welded the sprocket on and faced it so that the 5/8" bushing would seat properly. The pulley was then welded on for a finished product. This was repeated for the drive on the opposite side. Today was rust evacuation day! After just under a barrel of sand I have some nice clean metal ready for paint. I did coat the inside of the trans with an internal engine paint. If all goes well I should be able to spray the rest of these parts next weekend.

After the disaster of the chain drive, I went back to belts. I was reminded immediately why I tried to make the chains work... belts and water don't work. Here's a video - it's been a while since the last. There's a few clips edited out that I'm not proud of...

I completely rebuilt my single stage blower in 2010. It has works flawlessly all these years.....at keeping snow away from this area. It has not seen snow since 2009.

It could even be a short frame square hood low HP engine tractor like a 656, 606, 657, 607, 1968 500 Special, Commando 6, etc etc, that came with the skinnier tires. This is my 500 Special that's all original and has the exact same back tires and probably fronts too.....

Have no idea of the Onan part # but if you want to get going today, every auto parts store sells rolls of gasket material so you can cut your own. Very handy to have around. Then you can replace it with a factory gasket when you get one.

Last year while doing some house cleaning I also did some Horse Trading. I Acquired this Loader and the best I can tell it is an ARK 500 Loader. It is missing the undercarriage mounting so no doubt I will have to fire up Ole SPARKY and do some fabrication. I am in need of a MANUAL for it if indeed it is a ARK 500. I also will be mounting this up on a Newer 520 with gear reduction and front swept axle. I have a couple 520's both of which have one foot in the grave. One is late 80's and the other early 90's the 90's model has a running Onan but is Suspect on how good of an Engine it is. I would have to combine both tractors to make a usable machine. I would prefer to purchase a Better 520 that needs nothing done to it for this project just because this year I have enough on my plate. At that point the others will most likely be parted out Just to keep what I have running. Anyway If anyone has a very fine 520 I may be Interested. I also would love pictures of the undercarriage framework and measurements for a 520 if possible. And last but not least I could use a Manual for the loader. Thanks ~Duke

I agree, the covers do collect the grass clippings and trap moisture causing the corrosion. They are on there to protect the operator and I have never left mine off, but have considered cutting away the part that is totally under the tractor, using the existing small studs as alignment pins, and installing two 1/4 turn dog type fastener to clamp the smaller cover down. This would allow quick removal without any tools for cleaning after every mowing job.

friend gave me close to 90 15.5 x 7.5 by like 2 inches tall bricks. so i went to work and put 64 infront of dads shed then 26 more for walkway. then took up 6 18x18 bricks from infront of my shed and laid down 2 rows of the smaller ones so i have a 3 inch gap for drainage (was getting water in shed). then laid the 6 18x18 back down in different location extending my work area. the wheel horse got the pleasure of knocking down the dirt piles in low areas in yard. after i did the video i took my sears suburban and went over it with my 3 poinr grader. heres a little video of the 701 in action. still getting used to hydraulic lift.

The only thing I see better about the 2stage is in my limited experience with it was that my chute "never" clogged in the DOT plow banks or the wet sleet topped 24"+ we got last January, other than that my tall chute single always came through in several 2' snowfalls over the 15+ years before especially on dirt/gravel driveways (that I doubt I would ever run my rebuilt 2stage over), again just my personal experiences, and as for the cab it really is more "pleasant" to blow snow as you don't wear what your chucking vs without it, mine is still all manually controlled and no extra lighting, just a dry comfortable shelter doing a not so pleasant job, Jeff.

Well guys thank you once more for the advice. I went out this afternoon and tried to engage the PTO after replacing the gear box with new oil. As soon as I put the lever down it sprung back up. Per what some of you advised I adjusted the trunnion a couple of turns and now the lever is staying engaged when running. Most of the snow is now melted but I had a spot next to my garage which I had to shovel by hand and hence a mound still of about two feet with some wetness to it. I put it in low and raised and moved into it with the housing lifted to get to the top portion and it did not clog and for the most part through the snow pretty good. Dropped the housing to normal and the belt did stop once but the PTO lever did not kick back. Put in reverse to back out of the snow pile and the snow cleared without my help. So not sure if it is correctly adjusted but is certainly working in this test far better then what it had been. Will still work on lubricating the rest of the tractor but for now it looks a whole lot better! Thank you all who responded once again. Jeff

Well I can honestly say I did not try Whale Sperm to try to resolve my issue! If you are referring to the blower impeller rubber modification i added it last year. As mentioned in dry powder it through the snow about a good 50' but anything else I have had the issues I am referring to. Thank you sir for your response. Unbelievable machine you have built for yourself!

I used to have that problem too! I tried all that spray on crap silicone, teflon, even WHALE SPERM all that stuff never worked for long, then I solved the problem I did the Rubber Paddel Fan Modification back in 2010. Haven't plugged up once in 7 years of operation. This Vid was on my first chucker a C-120 and now is on a highly Modified 520-H Here are some links to a few of my Vids BLOWIN SLUSH CHUTE MODIFICATION MODIFIED 520

It would look a bit strange for a red tractor to pull a green cart, but as long as you stay away from public areas where you might be seen, I suppose you could get away with it
  45. 2 points
That's a nice cart. Deere made some great carts and some of them are highly sort after and collectible. Don't worry about pulling a green cart with any color tractor. What ever you do, keep that cart green. It will be worth a lot more if you ever decide to sell it.

You will need to check out the power to the coil and verify you have +12 Volts when the key is on and also in crank position. If not then start bactracking to figure out why. If so then verify the negative side is pulsing when cranking to verify the module. If negative side stays constant at ground or +12 volts then the module is likely bad. If it is pulsing and you have 12 volts on the positive side of the coil then the only thing left is the coil itself. Cleat

If the impeller stops due to a snow clog, you should see the engine load up and lose RPM. Something is not right in the drive line. ie PTO clutch slipping, belt slipping, key or pin sheared in a shaft/pulley. Like Garry says, the PTO should not trip if the clutch is adjusted correctly with adequate pressure on the plate.

Have you checked BOTH gearboxes for gear oil level? And ever changed the gear oil out? When I bought mine 2 years ago I had to rebuild it as the PO "wrecked" it ,impeller bent, drive chain rusted stiff, auger end bushings worn through to the holders ect ect ect, also the auger gearbox was nearly dry because of the seals were shot and leaking, the jackshaft gearbox oil was thick and nasty, all drained out and refilled with full synthetic 75/90, and the auger gearbox was torn down and replaced bushings, seals and gasket, and refilled same lube, Jeff.

Duke here is one of my 520 undercarriages used on the FEL I built. It worked pretty good. The tubing is 1 1/2" x 1/8" thick except the cross bar is 3" x 1 1/2" x 1/8". I ran the tube out the back to attach the oil tank and some plates for weight. I used the attach a matic on the front, but for some reason I didn't trust it will all the down force exerted by the frame, so I added a couple angles from the frame to the cross tube. The frame width worked out just so the pump could be mounted on the side with adjustment. I think the ARK Loaders are just a hair wider than mine but you got that unit to measure from. Any Q write. Joe

Yup, 1961 701 is what you have. Nice to have that engine belt guard because those are difficult to find. It's the only one which uses a double belt for the starter generator so that guard is a lot deeper. What are your plans for it? Restore or just get'r running for a worker?
