I've been collecting tractors for a few years now, but haven't gotten a Wheel Horse until today. I don't know why this is, because my fascination for tractors began when my Dad came home with one back around 1965. So far, I have 12 tractors including 6 Cub Cadets, a Farmall Cub, a Simplicity, a Case 155, a Scotts, a Craftsman, and as of today a Wheel Horse C-81. I'll talk more about the C-81 elsewhere, but suffice to know how excited I am because it's old and needs lots of work.

I got this hoist from Santa this Christmas. Thought I'ld give it a try today. I'll still use a safety support of some kind when I'm under a tractor. I really wanted to drain the gas tank ... this did it!

Every once in a while, somebody will contact me looking for a transmission or gears for their vertical shaft horse. I have to admit that I really know nothing about these transmissions, but I am hopping that we have some members out there that do, and they are willing to share their knowledge. The last time was for a B-111, a horse that was made for 2 years (1978/1979). The gentleman had the B-111 with the 6 speed "Foote 4000-5" transmission. The B-111 also came with a 4 speed "Peerless 669". With the help of @slammer302 in Missouri, he had the Peerless 669 and sold and mailed it to our gentleman in Michigan to replace has broken Foote transmission. The Peerless was a direct bolt-in for the B-111 and the gentleman is happily using his B-111 again. I just got asked again about a replacement or gears for the Peerless 669 for another B-111 in Florida. We do not have many if any threads on this subject, and I think it would be nice to pool any knowledge that is out there. So does anybody have any experience in substituting Peerless, Foote and possibly Eaton transmissions in vertical shaft Wheel Horses?? Does anybody have any experience substituting any of the Peerless transmissions?? If you happen to have any of these transmissions laying around, would you put your RS handle in here so we have a place to start to look?? Thank You

It was unusually warm here if not sunny. Took advantage of almost 70 degree day in February and brought the tractors out to stretch and relax in the outdoors. It was overcast so no tractor saw its shadow. Hopefully that means spring will come sooner.

Thanks for the warm welcome fellas, but take it easy because I blush rather easily. Here's some tractor porn for you.... Hey Jay Bee, I'm ex-Army 72'-74'

Hey Jay, If you see Craig sneakin around in the thicket looking for the Pond , make sure he doesn't steal one of the Deere I saw in there.

Hi everyone. I am in the middle of a complete overhaul of my 1988 308. Doing research on the web always brings me to topics on this site, so I figured I would share my project. I am starting with the most basic of the 300 series, but once it's done it will be a Cadillac. What's the best way to post pics and how do I become a supporter? Thanks.

Great story and pictures Bob. Thanks for sharing. My participation in my own two Sons activities unfortunately was limited due to travel and work. But now I have the time and means to attend all my Four Grandsons activities, and I try to not miss any. The oldest, Reed, Will graduate High School this spring and has some college acceptance letters now and is still waiting for some to be sent out in March. He will probably end up at Lehigh, Cornell, or R I T. This will be a new phase in watching these boys become young men. Here are a few pics of my pride and joy.

I'd have to vote towards the Raider - and put a set of Firestone ags on the back of the 1276 with a set of the Vredesteins on the front to boot...can't beat that look with it's elegant hood design . I run ags on all 4 corners of the 1277 and lot of folks comment on it around here despite it's rust and general abused look - no other garden tractor could match it's beastly elegance .... Sarge

Managed to get a few coats of ivory on the wheels and inflate them, nice to spray them and get the paint down in the rim without getting it all over the tyres

I took a couple of the drawings floating around here on RS, and made some 3D models. From that I made 2D drawings. I enjoy making the 3D models, the 2D drawings not so much, but from the 3D models , it isn't too bad to create the 2D drawings. The fun part is creating the 3D models though. These were pretty basic and simple. Below are the Front Blade Lift Link drawing, the second one is of the clevis hitch, and the third is the dual wheel adapter. Keep in mind, these are my drawings, but they're based on what was floating around here on RS for quite some time. Front Blade Lift Links.pdf Clevis Hitch.pdf Dual Wheel Adapter.pdf

Starting off with the basic horse I bought from my neighbor for $145. The 37" deck was beyond repair but I have a Deere I mow with so I didn't need that. I just needed a wood/dirt hauler and snow machine. I'd rather have an 8 speed than automatic so I decided to upgrade the 308 rather than buying a bigger 400 or 520. Another reason for the repower. I've always been partial to Briggs motors, so I thought why not drop one of the smoothest running and reliable engines I know of in there. A 42ci 18hp opposed Twin. Finally found one on eBay last fall. After tearing it apart it turned out to be too far gone to restore but it was off a wheel horse, I'm guessing a work horse. So it gave me all the tins, pto, and engine mount I needed. Then a friend of mine found a nearly identical twin off a craftsman that he gave me. So between the two I can make one. And so it began... What I started with Started off repainting the wheels, new rubber, and wheel weights. Carlisle turf II front and tru power lugs in back. I don't have a torch so you'll have to excuse the crude angle grinder cuts. 1" bolt with barbell weights. 55lbs of weight and 15 for the bracket each side.

My first Automatic in the stable, '76 C-120. Found her on a local CL ad, owner wanted to pretty it up someday but had inherited a JD & didn't have room for it. He said it ran great, needed new battery. Hooked a jumper box to it & she fired right up, no smoke, no ticks, no knocks. Tranny is strong & tight, 48 inch deck in great shape & 42 inch plow that looks like it was used once! $350.00 later she was on the trailer headed home. Here she is home next to the C-81 I got two weeks ago...

Wife and I made a little metal art today. Was cleaning at the farm yesterday and found a bucket of horseshoes, as well as the old flexplate out of the 79 Chevy I had in high school. So we turned them into this...Katy welded most of the shoes together around the center, and I built the stand for it. Still have to get it painted but I thought it turned out really well

Many of us have kids and grandkids involved in wholesome activities such as sports and others. I love seeing our young ones involved in these activities so I thought I'd start a thread so us old folks could brag them up. Our granddaughter, Madison, is a freshman in high school this year. Deltona High School is one of the stronger girls softball teams in the state. Madison has been playing softball for several years now and has become very good. I figured she'd make the team but I never figured she would be the varsity starting shortstop especially as a freshman. I was at one of her games and she was outstanding at her position. She fielded the ball very well playing part in many outs and twice caught a low line drive and and got it to first before the runner could get back for a double play. I called her my little Ozzie Smith. As you can see, she's a little drink of water. When she goes to bat if the outfielders haven't seen her play they would come in closer thinking she couldn't hit it past them. Once they got to know her they learned to step back closer to the fence. The team is currently 4-0 and has outscored their opponents 29-3. Let's see more stories and pictures of the young ones you're proud of.

Found a single stage and blade on Craig's list last year. The blower was in mint condition and just needed geased basically. The blade was in typical condition and just needed a weld and paint job.

If it is amber it should be 10w-30 not straight 30w, The available universal ATF Dexron 3/Mercon would be the choice if it is red. But like Ed said use what ever is in there now either one works just fine.

Super work Aldon. I was texting you yesterday about that bracket to see if you had an extra one. Don't need one now. You'll see why in a little while.

This is more about bolt patterns and interchangeability. I know some of the earlier Peerless are throw away...but do the bolt patterns in these transmissions match up?? These vertical shaft horses are getting older, and people (members) are going to be trying to keep them running. I'm looking to know what fits first, and what you can work on second. I know most of you would say to junk it and buy a horizontal shaft, but some of these guys are in their 80s and 90s...and they like their horse. This is only about "manual" transmissions. Thank you I also know that we may not have a lot of experience with this sort of thing out there. Please...if you don't have anything to add to this thread, then don't.

Interesting thread here since I am in the process of a project that I am doing all in SS Allen head hardware. I realize that SS in not the best fastener to use but a habit from my bike building days! More than a few choice words once I understood about the galling thing. Thanks for the tips and info on where to buy guys. Kinda tired of paying Ace prices but the closest and quickest. Next project gets chome hardware!

Let's see......I'm thinkin if I hang that old Packard engine on the back, I might have some traction when I lift the plow. Oh, and maybe add a few more trip springs to be sure those long 3/8" eye bolts bend to the correct angle when I hit the curb.

I had the same thoughts on the muffler. Ended up making manifold adapters with one inch pipe for pepper pots. Looked long and hard at the big block Honda header pipe that puts the muffler in front of the engine. Was not sure of the fit, but is looked like it would do the job.

Our grand daughter Mackenzie is a real book worm and a Disneyholic. She is 12 and is a seventh grader enrolled in a Magnet School with a concentration in Medical and Computer Sciences. She has already gone far beyond my limited ability to help with her homework. I may need to sell some of my herd in a few years to help with collage tuition.

They have a few different tools, a plastic felling wedge is a tool I don't cut without. Look like a splitting wedge, as you cut one you get 1/3rd through drop the wedge in your cut, as the tree compresses the wedge holds the gap preventing the bar from being pinched. A peavey or canthook is used to roll the log so you can cut without the chain hitting dirt. I'll post some pics at some point Here's yesterday's job. Had a huge beech that broke off 10' up. Cut all that last year, yesterday I wanted to finish the job. I had a 25" bar on my Stihl 460 magnum, first run since a rebuild and no oil pressure. Swapped bar on to my 044 and an hour later I had it down. That tree was 3' at the butt so I had to make a three wedge cuts then a back cut, that was tricky due to the boulder resting on the back of the tree. A few tugs with the choker cable and chains hooked up to our tractor and it's down. I cut some of the smaller limbs off with my 3450 Poulan, that saw runs awesome. We might make some table tops from one of the rounds, the grain is so nice

Thanks guys. Think I may need to hunt around the repair shops around here for more flexplates. I've already had two or three people ask me if it's for sale. This is where the idea stemmed from...we have buckets of old rusty pliers and things too but couldn't find enough to go all the way around...so laid out the horseshoes and decided we liked it better anyway

Thanks for the feedback. The muffler will need modified or the frame will. One or the other. Or both:-) I am still pondering options but it does seem that flipping it over by cutting it free of manifold flanges and re-welding seems best option if I go route of using stock muffler. I don't like exhaust pointed backwards into me. As for the generator, it had been on our wish list for a long time and I kept kicking it down the road. Then we had a power outage that lasted almost an entire night. Not significant as outages go as they have been as long as 2 weeks where we live but not since we moved here. The one night was a reminder that we are more dependent than some for power. Heat, water(on well) and medical equipment. So it got bumped way up priority list. Basically it was my wife and i's Christmas gift to ourselves this year. Peace of mind.

When you live in the country it is best to have hardware on hand. Having other hobbies only makes it more necessary. Mil Veh like Gr8 NF, Farm Tractors like bigger stuff Lower Left is Gr8 NF Stainless and Galvanized, Upper left 1/4 to 3/8 various styles also nuts washers etc...yellow bins longer bolts 1/4 to 1/2" Lowery right 9/16 to 1-1/8" bolts nuts...There is a separate section not in photo for 5/8" nuts bolts. Some of us have horse addictions some other addictions

Well, after owning and neglecting the tractor for a couple of decades, it looks like I have lost possession of it in a single day! Our 6 year old grandson actually skipped going to The Pizza Ranch so he could come out and clean his new tractor, lol He worked on it for at least 3 or 4 hours this afternoon! Doesnt run, but sure is clean!!!
