Many of us have kids and grandkids involved in wholesome activities such as sports and others. I love seeing our young ones involved in these activities so I thought I'd start a thread so us old folks could brag them up. Our granddaughter, Madison, is a freshman in high school this year. Deltona High School is one of the stronger girls softball teams in the state. Madison has been playing softball for several years now and has become very good. I figured she'd make the team but I never figured she would be the varsity starting shortstop especially as a freshman. I was at one of her games and she was outstanding at her position. She fielded the ball very well playing part in many outs and twice caught a low line drive and and got it to first before the runner could get back for a double play. I called her my little Ozzie Smith. As you can see, she's a little drink of water. When she goes to bat if the outfielders haven't seen her play they would come in closer thinking she couldn't hit it past them. Once they got to know her they learned to step back closer to the fence. The team is currently 4-0 and has outscored their opponents 29-3. Let's see more stories and pictures of the young ones you're proud of.

Wife and I made a little metal art today. Was cleaning at the farm yesterday and found a bucket of horseshoes, as well as the old flexplate out of the 79 Chevy I had in high school. So we turned them into this...Katy welded most of the shoes together around the center, and I built the stand for it. Still have to get it painted but I thought it turned out really well

There is nothing wrong with the transmission. If the trans is in neutral, the tractor is not moving because of the trans...whether it is in either hi or low...and it is either in hi or low. (you are always in one or the other). There is no between hi and low, if you put the lever so that you are not engaged in either hi or low, you are close to damaging that part of the trans...it is not made for that. With that said, if the rest of your transmission is in neutral, neither of the 2 fork gears are engaged with either the reverse idler or the cluster gear. Want to test what I say...you should be able to push your tractor either forward or backward with it in neutral and either in hi or low range. If you can move your tractor back and forth while it is running in neutral...it is not the transmission. It is probably just the engine running and it's "good vibrations".

Our grand daughter Mackenzie is a real book worm and a Disneyholic. She is 12 and is a seventh grader enrolled in a Magnet School with a concentration in Medical and Computer Sciences. She has already gone far beyond my limited ability to help with her homework. I may need to sell some of my herd in a few years to help with collage tuition.

Nah, It was 72 degrees here today and I cut two dead blue spruce and needed a horse to drag em to the burn pile. The 520 blower happens to be at the front of the line, so he got the call.

Gonna guess there is nothing wrong with the tranny. Probably the back and forth motion if the pistons in the Onan moving the tractor from vibration.

Hello everyone! I've been checking out the forum or a year or so now and finally decided to join up. I got my 1991 312-Hydro from my Grandmother In Law a few years back when we purchased our first home and this little tractor has shocked me. It has never failed to start and do it's job. Now that I'm hooked I started looking for the attachments for this little guy. How rare is the tiller attachment for this? I've seen a few but it seems they are pretty scarce. I would love to pick one up to do some gardening and some landscaping around my house. Maybe a restoration will come this this guy in the near future. Any tips and tricks would be much appreciated . On a side note I may have found it too late but I'm second in line to go check out a 87ish 310-8 with a tiller and snow blade for $400. Hopefully I can pick that up! Thank!

Looks great, is it yard art? Might add some solar, LED lights to make it pop.

Just bought this A-90. Not sure why! Now I'm wondering what I should do with it. Fix it up? Part it out? Keep it along with my 310? The fella I got it from says he parked it running 8-10 years ago. It's been sitting behind his barn all these years. The motor is not locked. Opinions?

I got this hoist from Santa this Christmas. Thought I'ld give it a try today. I'll still use a safety support of some kind when I'm under a tractor. I really wanted to drain the gas tank ... this did it!

Thanks to Dave, I got the hydraulics line I needed for my 520H and finally got it put back together. I actually got the line a couple of weeks ago, but didn't get the chance to work on it until this week. First my mother-in-law passed away suddenly a couple weeks ago, then four days after her funeral, I had to go in the hospital for a heart cath and stent so I couldn't do anything for a week after that. Then a week ago my father-in-law went into the hospital for an infection that had turned septic. We didn't get him out until this Monday. So things have been rather crazy in my life lately. Since things are finally getting back to normal, I was finally able to spend some time in the shop this week. I did drain out what little oil was left in the transaxle and replaced it with fresh 10w30 Rotella. It was nice to finally get to drive it around the yard yesterday. The tractor still has a couple of minor issues. Biggest issue is the gas gauge sending unit, and I have posted a thread about that in the electrical section. I also have a wonky light switch, so I need to find another one of those. I'm also missing the handle for the hydraulic lift lever, and the knob for the choke. No biggie. They are both still available from Toro, the handle isn't cheap tho. The engine runs good, tho it does burn a little oil when it's cold but goes away when it warms. Don't know what was put in it for oil tho, or if it's maybe diluted with gas. Haven't had the chance to do anything with the engine yet. Also I noticed that when I turn on the key, all the lights come on (as they should) except for the oil. Don't know if the bulb is burned out or even if they are replaceable. Also have to replace one of the tail light lenses, as well as both bulbs, one of the headlight bulbs, and a couple of the gauge bulbs. Also need to fix/adjust the switch for the parking brake light. Again, minor issues. Overall, I am pretty happy with this machine so far. BTW, I have tried to put that 520H club thingy in my signature, but can't figure out how to do that on my iPad. Pics below.

That's funny. I met my wife when she was a teenager and all her life people have told her she looks like Sally Fields. I think parents and grand parents get more excited than the kids when they do something great. It sounds like Katie has her head on straight.
  13. 4 points
A beautiful girl. She looks a lot like Sally Field. Mine got started on the ball field and they noticed how fast she was. They kept throwing the ball to try to get her out, but she was already past the base when the ball arrived. Four of those kids on that same team ran track, and the records they set at the county track meet in junior high will be there for years. Katie ran 100 and 200 sprints and relays. As a sophomore, we were at districts and she ran as a placeholder to keep the race open for the better quarter miler who was under the weather. Then it was to regionals, one step away from the state track meet. She qualified, and on the final race, after only running the quarter twice before, she put it all out there and finished first. Got third at state and that race was only her sixth time running the 400M! The following years those same four girls did much better and Katie got to stand on that podium seven more times and two as an individual. Her best quarter mile ever was run at Columbus at 56.83 as a senior, finishing 2nd. Many years that time would have got her the title, but she ran against some real talent that year. Now she is at U of Mich. working on a higher degree and doing it all on her own.

I like that Brandon. Only from the mind of an engineer. "Viscous coupling"
  15. 4 points
Sounds like you may have a bit of viscous coupling going on in there, maybe too heavy fluid? This maybe stupid, but was it on a very slight downhill slope? Vibrations will move it then. And yes, ALWAYS set the parking brake on a running tractor. Be sure it is adjusted correctly to stop the tractor too.

I did the same thing last weekend only "Cisco" has a dozer blade mounted. We were cleaning up the property alongside the road. It also consisted of removing a thorn bush (wear gloves!) that Mrs. Sailor has been complaining about. One thing though is that a 518xi with a snow cab on it, is not mean't to be driven when it is 72 degrees outside. Too hot!
  17. 4 points
The first thing I would do is a good transmission flush. Drain it, fill it with diesel or kerosene, run it a few times around the yard, drain it again, and refill with new transmission oil. Remember to lift the front end to get all the oil/fluid over the hump. It it still does it, set the parking brake when you are not on it and have the engine running.
  18. 4 points
You know I considered that Mike. With the chute rotator and deflector, I could have spread the mulch as it was chipping. Probably would have to change out the rubber auger paddles for some sharpened knives. Hey, this is starting to sound like another MAD MAX project.

I've been working on rebuiding Hydro pumps as it's been on the to do list for way too long so I am not making a ton of progress on this project. But I have made some. A pic with the engine in close proximity to its home position. Note that the engine drive pulley is installed. Used sleeve spacer and key obtained off eBay. Looks like it will work excellent. The swap from Hydro to tranny means the support structure needs modified. The piece that supports the rear no longer mates up directly with tranny. There are a thousand ways to skin the cat. I chose to use a similar spare part as donor for material to fab a cross brace or ?? To weld in place. Then I will drill two holes to attach to manual tranny. I plan to install hydraulic pump and independent 3 point so I am going a bit beyond to assure the rear and 3 point is solid. My hope is to add a loader and I want the read to survive the weight of counterweight on the 3 point. Here are some pics. If weather holds and I can figure out my issue with welding I hope to get this piece finished this weekend.

953 and you other guys----------- It is never too early to start researching scholarships and such things Your granddaughter being in STEM disciplines may put her in line for some scholarships. It is a little known fact that one of the better ones happens by taking the SAT and ACT as a sophomore. Some of the easier scholarships to find show up just by looking in the local papers. All you have to do is read through them all and see the kids getting the awards now and you will know what to look for when her time comes. I got a "college aid for Dummies ' book and it was worth at least ten grand.in how to navigate the system. For example, even colleges who are not participants in athletic scholarships count participation as being a good citizen and hard worker toward your aid package. We were even contacted by an Ivy league school, but NYC scared our little country girl to death so we never went to see the coach. Katie is managing to pay her debt down as she attends and also is saving quite a bit in a Roth IRA. She knew from the start what we would pay toward her school and that it was conditional on her graduating. It is not easy, but you can work your way through school so long as you work FOR the school you attend. As long as her 1997 Buick holds out, she is in good shape with finances... I have helped a few people figure out how to get started, so you can PM me if interested.

Had to spend half the productive daylight hours assembling chicken coop for the great chicken experiment my wife and I are planning for this spring. But I did get to some tractor stuff eventually. Started mocking it up. I can see already that the steering I plan to use is going to be very challenging and require major cosmetic surgery. Hope to try and fit engine to frame and see what ripple effects that is going to trigger on Monday.

74* yesterday 75* today here in south central Pa. There`s a pond in a thicket about a 100yrds from my house and the peepers are singing away on the 24th of February. I know some of you guys like snow, but so far this has been my kind of winter...
  31. 2 points
That's some great information. Madison went to the camp at the University of Florida. this past summer. There's already talk about a scholarship to Stetson but they can't officially approach her about it as a freshman. She's hoping to go to the camp at Notre Dame this coming summer but that's still up in the air. Most of you know where I'd like to see her go. Her grades are there to make it to ND but she need to get a better understanding of the participation you referred to. That carries a lot of weight. It sure sounds like you are doing all the right things for Katie and I suspect graduating won't be an issue for her.

The pump and cylinder on 953s are basically the same as the HY-2 and 3 and the manual for them is a lot clearer than what is in the 953 manual. The cylinder can be taken apart by unscrewing the pipe thread fittings at both ends. As Lane said, you can get repair parts from Lowell. http://www.wheelhorseman1000.com/product-p/hy-es.htm

Hopefully this thread gets rolling and we see a lot more feel good stories. There's more out there than we hear about but now's the chance for the Red Square world to let other members see it.

Thanks guys. Think I may need to hunt around the repair shops around here for more flexplates. I've already had two or three people ask me if it's for sale. This is where the idea stemmed from...we have buckets of old rusty pliers and things too but couldn't find enough to go all the way around...so laid out the horseshoes and decided we liked it better anyway

So, that would be a 312-8; good reliable model which will last forever if properly maintained. Here is a copy of the manual for your transmission.

The 6 speeds are the same as the 8speeds for the subject you enquire about. There are differences in internal parts but they basically share the same construction. The later 3speed is of the same rugged type as the later transaxles. The biggest issue is abuse and maintenance.JAinVA

I personally can't see how... mounting up a set of NOS hub caps to either of those two tractors... could possibly be considered a bad thing.

@Lane Ranger are the lift cylinders rebuildable on the 1054 ? I looked at mine and I don't believe it is. Also I sat my pump on my work bench and the spool valve fell into the tank about 2 inches and now I think I'll have to open it up to get it back to top. I probably should open it any ways to clean it . inquiring minds want to know.

At first glance I agreed with my dog....Ruff! But the more I look at the photo, I see it might not need all that much to get it running, and put to work. I hope you keep us posted on the project.
