A-Z Tractor is offering a tiller tine kit upgrade for the Wheel Horse and Toro tractor mounted tillers. This kit includes a center pipe that the tines bolt to, the tines, and grade 8 bolts to mount them. The original tines were welded on the pipe and the replacement from Toro is very expensive. This kit is selling for $540.00 compared to $900.00 from Toro. When the tines wear out or get damaged all you have to do is unbolt it and install a new one. The replacement tines for this kit are selling at $8.45 each or the set of 24 for $195.00. This tine set replaces Toro number 93-1602-03 and 93-1603-03. If you have a tiller that this tine set doesn't fit contact me and I will make the set that works on your tiller. My goal is to provide tines at a reasonable price for the Wheel Horse tillers. I plan to have these at the big show this year but I can also ship them. The tines that I am using also will fit the bigger tillers that had the bolt on tine Toro number 102803 and 102802. If you want to order a kit you can email me at aztractor255@gmail.com or call me at 1-717-821-2542. This kit will ship for free in the US.

This is Russ' daughter - dad is back home from a stay at Norwalk Hospital following a fall last Thursday. He broke his T8 vertebrae (in his back) and is glad to be back home. He is walking slowly, but surely. I will try to keep you posted on his condition until he can get on the computer and do it himself.

I just bought a 1988 Wheel Horse 520H . Came with a 60 inch deck, single stage blower and tiller and chains for $400 It runs and drives but 20 HP Onan surges and know it sat a while ( year) and needs carb cleaning, fuel change basic tune up. Its no show rig... I know NOTHING else about this rig and for that matter any garden tractor. I'm not too green around small engines and will figure it out but if there was some place to look and get started on anything that would be helpful, I would appreciate it. I don't even know how to install the deck...did I say I wasn't too green...:) I also wouldn't mind knowing , at best guess , if the deal was decent or not. I plan a "homeowner" rehab but more looking to just keep on using it as intended, for work. Thanks

Opened up CL last night just to get a good laugh at the sudden price increase in snowblowers locally and boy people didn't dissapoint! Last week's mid $200 machines somehow went and became $400 machines! LOL After being tickled for a bit by people's opportunistic ways, I refreshed the page before closing it (never know) and JACKPOT! A new listing shows up for a "70's Wheel Horse Snowblower"! I read the ad and it was obvious this fella needed some money quickly. *Side note* : If you don't want lowball offers, don't put "I'd like $160 but make me an offer, need to move it quickly" in the title. So I sent the fella a message offering $100 cash if it has compression and spark and got an almost immediate "Sure does. Just needs a fuel line and it's all yours." WOOOOHOOOO! Went and picked her up and it's way better than I thought! Has the WH enclosure and everything! True to his word, I swapped the fuel line, drained the gas, changed the earl, popped in a new plug, and first pull humming! Come to the conclusion it's a 74' Trailblazer 7 - two stage with the Tecumseh 7hp (by Lauson) motor. I'm STOKED!! I' haven't moved snow with it yet but everything appears 100% operational and mechanically sound. I'll be taking the enclosure up to the nice Asian lady (who does some fine upholstery work) to get new plastics and a couple patches done. I have NO idea what these go for, but I'm fairly sure $100 isn't putting me on the short end! Don't matter because she's not going anywhere. Any input, advice, suggestions, tips, etc.. are more than welcome! Thanks! (Snow moving update and more pics to come)

So I have the widened 8 speed ready to bolt together and paint. I was sure I had new bolts and nuts. Alas, I hate it when you get ready to close out a major project milestone and have to delay for something so insignificant. Regardless, I should have this sealed up and painted in next few days. Special thanks to @stevasaurus for his assistance and his videos!!!!

I got the inside of the transmission cleaned up, and the case cleaned and primed. Then I cleaned up the frame and found the "dreaded" transmission mount cracks. I have seen some of the ways people have fixed it, but decided not to go to the extremes and only used 2x2 14 ga angle to reinforce the corners after grinding and welding the cracks.

Since July I've owned those 4! The 3/14 was sold and replaced with my 3/15. The raider 12 was pretty cool. I had seen it rusting in a yard not far from my house. Told my wife I'm leaving a note about that tractor, she said I was nuts, but I got it and for free. Engine was free, hydro was as well. I sold it to a friend but I took the slot hitch, cable, chains and the rear tach o matic. So right now I have the3/12 and 3/15 set up for winter duty with a 48" plow on the 12 and 44" blower. The 15 needed a good cleaning wheel seals and bearings. I welded up a 2" receiver for it and made a weight rack to hang my suitcase weights. The 12 came with cast irion wheel weights and chains. We had 15" snow here first chance to use the 3/15 with the blower. Wow threw the snow 35', my drive goes up hill and the the chains and 180lbs of weight it operated awesome. Here are pics from the fall. 3/14 loaded with loam, and kids for our October fest hayride. My 3/12 became a haloween prop, also had my pioneer p41 with a big Stihl bar on it

I am new to anything mechanical and inherited a WH856 in pretty good condition when my Father in law passed. My daughter and I turned to this forum to learn all we can to get it in working condition. well low and behold you guys taught us so much and we cleaned the piston head, changed piston ring, cleaned valves, rewire, changed condensor, breaker point, spark plug, coil, ignition switch, fuel tank, fuel lines, throttle and choke cables and got that baby running. my wife was so happy as it is the only thing she has of his. Now we are in NY we get a major snow fall and I break out the WH856 with plow and am making short work off plowing but then wheels go cockeyed. the right hand ball joint assembly keeps coming off. how can I fix this? where can I get both left and right ones so I can make sure it doesn't happen again. while I am at it how do make sure there is enough lubrication in the transmission? I am going to post pictures of the 856 soon. It is named after y father in law .... "Dominick da Plumber"

OK...I just saw this a little bit ago and now, I have had some time to do a little thinking about this. Usually, when somebody falls (like out of a tree) or on the snow...you would fracture your wrist. After all that is what everybody sticks out there to break their fall. You break a bone in your upper arm...a humorous bone no doubt. After much searching on Google images, 98% of the people that fall and break that bone are picking their nose while they are walking on a slick surface. Say it ain't so JIm. I hope it does not hurt to laugh my friend.

I was thinking that fifth of wine...... So let me get this straight you were on your way to the doctors to get better when your wife saw that new to you you bought instead of that anniversary present and she got wild, got out the rolling pin AND cast iron skillet and gave you the I'll give you something to go to the Dr's about!! the best medicine!

I'm sorry Jim, but I see the humor in this. That is the best picture that I have of you. BTW, nice bruising in that arm. On a serious note...you have a ton of people that love you man. My prayers with you and Karen. I know what it means to be laid up, and the only way to get by is to make the best of it. I suggest watching some Tella-Tubbies Videos...they really do help to make you feel better.

Nice looking 856. To check the oil in the trans. Take out the little plug on the side of the trans (left?). It will be a little more then an inch up behind the rear axle tube. This is the fill plug. If none comes out, stick a small screw driver in there and see what the oil (if any) looks like. If it is clean, not caramel color, You can add 90wt oil until the oil starts to drip out that plug hole. I like to remove the 2 bolts that hold the seat and fenders on...on top of the transmission...use a small funnel and add the oil in there. If the oil is dirty and you want to change it, there is a drain plug under the trans. It will take about 2qt of 90wt to fill it if you drain it all out. If the trans is really dirty, you can flush it with diesel fuel once or twice and then fill with clean oil. There is a small hump in the bottom of the trans that will hold some oil when draining. Jack the front end of the 856 up about 18" to get all the old oil out.

Jim, I don't see anything humerus about this either. Dang man, as they used to sing on Hee Haw: "gloom, despair, and agony on me; deep dark depression, excessive misery; if it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all; gloom despair, and agony on me." Okay. So what can I say? I guess I'll just say Spring is coming. There has to be a silver lining somewhere. Oh yeah, you didn't break your glasses, and you didn't do it while back-flipping a Wheel Horse. Get Well Soon my friend! Oh, just thought about something. You need to get well so you can come to the WHCC show and be in the running for the infamous RedSquare hardhat.

In an emergency, you can clamp the tie rods in a vice and peen the area around the ball to keep them in place. This can keep it working till you get them replaced. And to the Oops, Paul is a better typist.

Tankman, I run a single stage on a gravel drive.I put 8" wheels on it.No problems with stones launching. With the standard skids gravel flies.I don't think you are wrong but I like the wheel setup. If you plow on a gravel drive, gravel seems to always ends up where it is not meant to be.

Happy Snow Day Connecticut, I was snooping around CL... ad for free Starcraft boat pops up (actually 2 ads... I search for Starcraft stuff ). I email them (no phone number)... almost instantly I get a response. Come and get it TONIGHT BEFORE SNOW or forget it. So I rush, get some tools, steal plate off other trailer and drive to Plainville about an hour away. Boat is straight, smooth, paint is faded, floor is rotted 100%, motor rolls over but hydraulic trim and tilt is inop. I pulled the bolts holding the rams and blocked motor up with 4x4... motor is Evinrude Star Flite 135 V4. Boat, motor and trailer are 1975--its an Aluminum 18' Holiday. Its home and currently under 6-8 inches of fresh snow with double that on way. Cant wait for spring! Tony

Yup major upgrade this year! Invested about $6 in new wire to wrap around the snow chute controler. With just a couple hand cranks of the rod I can now smoothly and quickly rotate the snow chute from left to right, or straight ahead and deliver massive amounts of snow with deadly precision striking my targets some 25 feet away. All executed without a laser dot or gps. Intoxicating power indeed:)

Kurt, you have inspired me to take some video of my 1973 Auto 18. She is the Wheel Horse power machine I use daily to manage my goat farm. From logs of wood to goat manure, moving bales of hay and multiple 50lb bags of goat and chicken feet.... (and tomorrow moving snow out of the way) my Auto 18 with the ARK 550 FEL does all the heavy lifting for me. And as time goes on, I slowly, upgrade her looks, and maintain and upgrade her. Stat warm. Video to follow!

Actually every year she gets better. That C-161 is one hell of a Horse! Blows through 2 miles of snow a foot deep on my country road. Then in the summer. She pulls my 3,800lb (plus trailer weight) Sea Ray 215 21.5 foot with a mercruiser 5.0 on a trailer and parks it in to place or pulls it out and gets it ready for my truck like a charm. Kinda like those tractors that pull and park those huge jumbo jets at the airport, lol!

Yes, did that to the one I got and rebuilt the fall of 2015 that I run on my bought new anniversary 520, plus greaseable lock collar bearings and solid stone deflector in the bottom section of the chute, here's the pic from last Feb here in VA, Jeff.

You are so right Jeff. I have a single stage on my 88 520H, it does a fine job. But my two stage is fantastic. And once you have a cab, you'll never go back. BTW, I put paddle extensions on the impeller on my two stage. I highly recommend them. It went from shooting snow 30ft to sending off as much as 100 ft.

I had tried quite a bit of seafoam and it would just never do the trick. You have to disassemble the carb and manually clean all the spots you can, including the fuel orifices (tiny holes). Then I had to run it through a ultrasonic cleaner for quite a few rounds. (Cheapo harbor freight one, you can search it here) When you are running new fuel line, take time and block off the ends when you are routing the last portion between the fuel filter and carb, this will save you much headache and you wont have to learn the hard way like I did. While you have the top end disassembled for the carb cleaning, go ahead and adjust your valves while you are there and if you are really feeling ambitious get a couple new gaskets and decarbon the heads. It will saving having to do the process again later when these things need to be done. Also, pull the tins and clean up behind them. The 520's are notorious for gunking up the back cylinder, overheating and dropping a valve seat due to slightly less airflow from the belt guard being back there.
  39. 3 points
But you will be so glad its a 48" when it comes time to swap it in and out. I think you are about 200lbs lighter with the 48 vs the 60. Your 88 wont run the 60" unless you swap in a swept front axle for it, but you likely wont need it. Nice find and great price! If you have a browse through the manuals section you can find all the manuals you could want. Garry will help out probably too. The surging will at the least require a very thorough carb cleaning. The onans are VERY picky about dirt. I put 2 fuel filters on mine, one larger micron filter back by the tank and a small micron between pump and the carb. After I spent two weeks getting my old one to stop surging I was not about to do that again! Oh, and no you are not too GREEN you are RED now! Welcome to the 'Square! (Although if you are mowing all that grass behind you there in the picture, you may want to look into the upgrade!)

Temporary quick fix for your tie rods. Take them off. Put the ball back in the socket and then use a center punch to deform the edge of the tie rod enough to retain the ball. Put a bunch of dimples all the way around the ball hole. I tried to paint the area in yellow just work your way all the way around. You may have to cut away the rubber seal.

Weather forecast was for 3-4" We got maybe 1/2" on grassy areas, none on roads or sidewalks, and at this minute, the sun is out melting away the evidence. No matter how many billions of dollars have been spent on satellites, radar, and other high tech weather predicting stuff, they rarely get it right.

Got the hood as good as I could. It still has some imperfections, but I am happy with the way it came out. I will be adding another coat still. Then I tore it the all the way down so I can start on the frame and transmission in order to work from the bottom up. When I saw the peanut butter come out of the trans and not a lot at that I was worried. Everything is cleaning up good though and I have ordered all the needle bearings and seals so that I can freshen it all up.

I like to design and build things - mostly from necessity. I used to like to build cars and paint them but not for a long time now. This is a 28 x 32 garage I built at my previous house. I did the excavating but hired someone for the concrete and block work. I made my own end trusses for it. My 1979 Z28 with a 502 crate motor, pontoon trailer I built for my brother, and a box rake attachment. My current project is my Kubota mini excavator. I'm upgrading from a 3 cylinder diesel to a 4 cylinder diesel. Replacing the hydraulic pump with a larger one. Making a cab for it. The most time consuming part of it is replacing the frame for the undercarriage as the old one is rusted out. I've got it all designed and am just starting to make the parts. Way too many things I have made so I will leave it at this.
