I figured I would go ahead and start a thread that will capture some of one of my distinct projects. The plan I started with is a GT14 as starting point, a 22hp Predator, Electric PTO, Independent Hydraulic lift and 3 point for tiller etc. At the big show I had the luxury of hanging out with @stevasaurus and we discussed transmissions at length. I have wanted to add an 8 Speed to a GT14 for a good while and I picked Steve's brain quite a bit. In addition to this, Kyle aka @fast88pu dropped by and as we discussed GT14's with loaders and Hydros and my want to do a 8 speed, he flagged me to the GT14-8 with loader in one of the buildings and off we went to visually inspect it. One shortcoming of the straight swap which was easy to note upon viewing said modified tractor is that the axles are too short and do not come flush with the end of the hub when tires are fitted to appropriate clearance. I needed the visual to understand as Kyle already knew this as he had a similarly modified GT14 he had picked up from @scotty. So my project appeared dead in its tracks until I went out to Cody's in Scranton PA area and he told me that the axles in the Hydro Transaxles could be swapped into the 8-speed directly. Kyle was riding shotgun with me just by chance. So at some point in this day trip Kyle and I agreed to a deal where I took home a 8-speed he had on hand with 1 1/8" axles. Steve helped me out with all the bearings I needed as well as mentoring me on a few of the challenges I encountered. This particular 8-speed is one of few with slightly unique main bearings,,,,,,but I managed to source all the replacement bearings and get prepared for the project, then Winter came along to seriously slow things down. It should be noted that in many of the GT14 transaxles, if not most, the axles are different from one side to the other. one side is 14 1/8" and one side is 14 3/4". One of my axles was beyond redemption. Could not get two good sets from 2 parts transaxles. On hold until @ztnoo came to my assistance here and I now had two good 14 3/4" axles. Along the way it was suggested I should make use of the Limited Slip differentials from the Hydro transaxles if I could. I spent several hours over the holidays trying different combinations but could not figure a way to make it work. It is plausible that there is a different Limited slip set up or parts that would make this easy. Or, if I had access to machine shop I could do it. But with a bench and what parts I have on hand, I am moving forward with normal diff with only real change being that I am installing longer axles. One of the pics below shows the 3 different axle lengths. In the pics below, it may be difficult to read the tape measure but the width of the modified set up is 29 1/2. Additionally I have a couple pics of the limited Slip Diff Side pieces that hold the axle to the assembly. Note they are not same and both are different from the 8-speeds. Lastly a sketch drawn to scale as much as I could determine. I am not a draftsman but it should be close. I want to end up with (29x12.5-15 ags) I have decided to use D Series Hubs. Rim wise I will need custom back spacing and I have sourced the necessary rims and inserts from Miller Tire. Thats where I am at until I can remove a very stubborn hitch pin from one tranny half after which I can start rebuild using new bearings and will post pic when I reach that point. eta a few weeks:) I dont do well in the cold.

This is the correct place for my potato growing attachments. They are based on standard agricultural parts. One is a middle buster I use to dig the furrows. The one with the tines is based on a 10" cultivator sweep. The nice thing about the digger is that I don't have near the damage to the spuds as I did hand digging.Back likes them, it is quicker and definitely worth the effort to make them.

A little history & some pics of our family's tractors... My grandfather purchased our first Wheel horse on 05/31/1979 when I was 14 years old, she was a brand new '78 C 81 eight speed bought from Baehre Ford Tractor in Allegan,MI. She came with a 36" rear discharge deck & new 10 cu. ft. dump cart, a 42" snowblower & wheel wheights were purchased a few years later. Fast forward 30 + years later I decided to "Retire" her & replace her duties with a "79 C141 I found locally for $350.00. She came with the same deck & a very well fabricated belly blade from a John Deere...(sacrilege) The plan was to to use the C141 while I rebuilt the C81, then I could leave the mowing to the 81 & the blowing to the 141... Well, the best laid plans of mice & men often go awry & I am no exception, between work, raising twins, remodeling the house, snowmobiles, quads, jet boats, cars & flying monkeys, life happens! So, this year I decided to add another carport & a plow for the Wheel Horse to my arsenal against Michigan winters, both arrived too late as we got hammered early this year. Now that they are both complete all the snow has melted, with nothing but rain in sight. (I'll take it!) Anyway, with a one day break in the weather & renewed enthusiasm in the horses I pulled the C81 out of the barn and brought her into the shop yesterday to keep her younger sister company while I work on her. No snow, but I did manage to pick up a whole trailer load of sticks & try out the new plow on a mole colony... The snow pics are from around early December...

If I were you, I would run heavy duty chains (v-bar or the like) and a bit of weight on the rear, and/or get wider rear tires. There has only been one person I know of that made a locking rear diff @meadowfield but his is selectable. You would not want to lock the diff all the time as the tractor will no longer turn well and you will eventually break something. The only real upgrade to your trans is to put an 8-pinion differential in there. I dont think it is worth a tear down just for that though, it will likely be strong enough for anything you need the wheel horse transmissions are very stout. The absolute BEST way to bullet-proof your trans is to USE YOUR HEAD. Don't shift on the fly, don't drop the clutch, don't yank or bang into things at high speed, keep fresh oil in it, etc... Follow those guidelines and you will get a LONG life out of that transmission.

Afternoon gentlemen had some free time today, so I fabricated a new muffler for my C-81 using a propane tank, and a variety of pipe fittings 3/4" and 1" from Home Depot. I used the existing mounting bracket off the old (shot) muffler as well as the end Tip otherwise everything is new.... The 3/4" pipe inlet and outlet were "brazed" on with an oxygen and acetylene torch. I also drilled several rows of holes all around the part of the 3/4" pipe that went into the top of the tank and closed the far end (welded a nut across the opening). End result is that it sounds almost exactly like the stock muffler now we will see how long it holds up.......NOTE: The tanks have two (2) spring valves (like the one's in a tire tube)..... they are a bit deeper then the one's in a tire tube so I took a piece of steel rod (same size as the hole) took my small cut-off tool cut a fork in the top of the rod inserted it into the tank valves screwed the valves out and then blew-out the tank with my air compressor. Note: you can also depress the valve with a small screw driver and get like 98% of any gas out. Like anything else you do have to take pre-cautions and be very careful. You could also fill it with water after the valves are out and then drain.

My windows are around 58 x 40 all vinyl thermal pane. When I ordered them as I was building the garage, I ordered the largest size until there was a substantial increase in price. That was just over 20 years ago so pricing is likely different now. Unfortunately 3 windows have now lost their seal and have moisture trapped in the glass. Better windows will have a warranty on this. The Northstar windows in the house have lifetime warranty. Sorry for all the clutter, I have been rebuilding the driveline in the XR4Ti. Cleat

Check it out! I found this RJ today as a lawn ornament. I knocked on the door and the guy ended up selling it to me for $200 with a plow and mower deck in awesome shape and all the manuals and receipts and even spare parts! I couldn't believe it. Hood has been repaired but its not destroyed, no muffler guard (typical), but its the original engine, belt guard, serial # sticker. Attachments are in remarkable shape compared to what I've seen. The skid shoes on the plow aren't even worn. Heres a couple pics, Ill take more tomorrow.

I never saw the original post but I do have some pictures of my potato implements for the WH. These tools are based on standard agricultural parts. One is a middle buster that I use to dig the furrows and the one with the tines is based on a 10" cultivator sweep.Never going back to hand digging ever again.I know these should be placed in implements and if gets moved I understand.I only posted here to at least give the posters some assistance.

Hi all! I'm a new member from Sweden taken the first ride of the year just yesterday. I have a Commando 7 which I am upgrading in a very slow pace to a Commando 8 buying one piece at the time as they pop up. I've just finished a transmission overhaul, replacing wheel axles, seals and bearings. Thanks to Terry M for supplying the axles, I could not have found them in Europe. Currently the seat is at the upholsterers. I've got a seat cover with slight damages from Fun Engineer, thank you very much. The cover will be used as is or as a template, it is not decided yet. Also, I have new bolted front wheels laying around waiting for mounting, that might be the next thing done to this horse. Best regards, Johan

Agreed Josh, I think I have just the one picked out already. Not overly huge but not small. When I built this garage I used the garage style tip open ranch windows but have since replaced them with vinyl sliders that I had to custom order from Menard's as the rough opening was a odd size. Will do some wiring upgrades and add air outlets at the same time as having the wall open. Going to make it happen if I have toss all of the wife's .....ah er.... my useless hoarded stuff to do it! At the same time going to add a small addition out the back towards the plow field to house a decent air compressor to power a future blast cabinet. Shelving supported from the ceiling with minimal floor supports or posts so against the wall floor space can still be utilized is going to be a top design priority.

I have done same by filing a large cotter key flat at the ends and using it similarly to a valve stem remover. A nail or small screwdriver through the top of the cotter key for torque.

Well guys, I know I'm going a bit slow, but I've finally have it 98-100% torn down, of course, the tires will come off of course, just leaving them on just for moveability, and i MIGHT take off the steering components, but I'm not too sure, may, may not. Time will tell. But, I am pretty much at the power washing phase, but of course....its winter....gotta figure out how to get around this one.

Had the wife's Commando V8 on cleanup duty today. We had a lot of fairly large limbs in our yard so figured I'd use the tractor to drag them out. Anyhow I helped the neighbor kids drag a few limbs and came back to the house, parking the tractor outside the fence. Now let me set the scene for you, the starter is out on her tractor so we have to raise the hood and rope start it. I always be sure and put the tractor in neutral and set the brake before dismounting, as well as checking before I start it, but it slipped my mind today. I raised the hood, wrapped the rope, gave her a good pull, and she took off right into a fence post. Bent the hood a bit and mangled up the hood hinges real good. So now we have a Hoodless Horse until I get the time to try and straighten everything out. Worst part was my neighbor was standing in his yard enjoying a beer, he got a few good laughs at me trying to get to the tractor before it hit the fence. Luckily no one was hurt, but it very easily could've got bad real quick.

Hello New to this sight. My Father and I are restoring a !970 Electro 12. Was hoping for all new decals. Can anyone help?

Good advice. Besides WHs one of my passions is two cylinder JD crawlers. These machines have no safety switches at all. I am aware of someone standing behind one and reaching over the fender to pull the starter rod.The clutch was engaged and the trans in reverse. He never did that again.I will leave it to your imagination what happened when the tractor started.

so are still getting nailed,it froze rain all last night, all day today and is still going, its strange because we get warm for a couple of hours and then back to the freezing rain, its a complete nightmare up here in the country,in the city only rain, had to assist the firemen at work today,a car hit a tree, and the lady refused help,on the way out of the scene(right in front where I work)a cop slipped and fell, knocked himself out and the firemen had to come back,it was so icy I moved gear for them with my loader tractor which is chained up and I have many tonnes of sand salt on hand,so I spred some sand for them to work on so no one else goes down,i have ice cleats for my boots and wondered why none of the responders have them, there great, like no ice at all,so every one goes away and I'm out getting the garbage cans and the fire trucks show up again, this time the lady up the road decided she needed help now,the firemen brought a ranger with tracks to get to the scene, its up a large steep hill, they get it stuck so I recue them again with my trusty new deere laoder tractor,ya I know a deere but this machine is beast, unstoppable even on pure ice,so I pull them out and go up the hill and help get the ambulance unstuck wuth my bucket load of sand and salt, they were very grateful and tried to recruit me as its a volunteer station and its hard to get guys that are close to the station in the day,but I reclined and went on my way

If you ever do pull the fenders I'd recommend changing out all fuel lines. I'm told they do break down over time, thank you ethanol. I use my tractors just a few times a year. I've installed inline shut off valves and marine style inline hand pumps for priming. It's worked out well for the last 3 years.

Nice work Rob! I wish there were more post that showcased innovative ideas. I bet that outlast a store bought muffler 2 to 1. A propane tank would also make a great looking stack muffler. May I ask; Why did you go from a 1" pipe down to a 3/4"? I would think it may increase back pressure???? Just saying.

That was my thought too Cleat. Right where I would want it is right above a workbench like Toms where I have a bank of cabs. Guess I will have to do a total re-arrange which needs to be done anyway to clean out junk I don't use or need. I should redo some shelves anyway and build heavy duty ones like I saw at Shynon's . Few pics here.... Will take out that small slider and open it up to the top of the bench and about 7 foot to the right. Find a different place for the cabs. I will have to header out for it and peel the steel siding off and rework it but that shouldn't be too big of a deal. Suggestions on the window type guys...some type of vinyl??? While I am at some more pics

A couple young police officers are my neighbors on the other side so I feel pretty good about that. I have a similar story to yours. My oldest son was home for college over the summer and took one of my old clunker cars out for a spin. My cop neighbor saw him driving it around town and didn't know who he was. He pulled him over and I happened to come upon them in a shopping center parking lot. I, of course, assumed my son was having too much fun in the Torino but my neighbor said he only pulled him over because he didn't know the guy driving my car. That was small town service at its best!

It's easier to adjust it in the 'raised' position, then lower it and try it out. Trial & error. Owner's manual says 1 1/2" from end of eye bolt, but I found 2" to be better for the snowblower. The assist spring makes a big difference for the first few inches of lift, but after that you're lifting too much weight with no 'assist'. Most of the time I only need to lift the unit a few inches, not all the way up. So I cut a new notch in the slide for the lift arm. It locks into place with the unit about 3" off the ground. Jim

There are two flag styles. One has no provision for spring attachment and the other has a clip welded to it so that the spring can be hooked to it.This point would be at base of the flag.Just aft of the engine and at the front of the foot rest there is a 3/4" bar that is welded to the frame. This bar is what the front part of the footrest sits on.This bar is where the other end of the spring is hooked. The attachment point on the flag would have an eyebolt and nut attached to it and the spring is hooked to the eye.By adjusting the nut on the eyebolt the amount of tension on the spring can be adjusted. Hope this makes sense but if I confused anyone the blower manual helps.JAinVA
