13 pointsI got these 2 Horses to pose for a couple of pics a while back. I had borrowed my brother's pressure washer and moved these future projects off of the back porch to wash it. If I'd a had more time they would have gotten a bath also.

9 pointsALWAYS one to follow rules, here is a pic of my 414-8. I picked it up at a tag sale for 150 bucks and gave it a decent worker refurb. I'll have to find a before pic. I've had 416's with Kohler 16's on them and I really don't notice a big difference in power. I think the 414's are one of the best trouble free workers out there...

8 pointsThis is the last piece that goes on this tractor. I just have to VHT2000 to it to complete. I am thinking either silver or black I also have cast iron not sure about that. I kinda like the way it came out real quiet now. I mean it is just a worker .No trailer queen here. OOHH my new heater I also have a 2 burner heats my space very well. Sorry about the sore neck picks tried to fix no go old camera.

8 pointsOK guys, we share all our love and pics for the RJ's, the Suburban"s, the 701's, the 953's, the C160's, the 520's, and occasionally a Blackhood........ But what about the 414's? It's like they don't even exist! Am I the only Red Square member who has a 414 in the barn? LOL Tell me it ain't so, and show us your 414 Tonight the 414-8 is getting an oil change. I have no idea how many hours are on this one because they do not have hour meters. What was up with that?!

7 pointsThe original gas tank on the Allis Chalmers BIG TEN is in sad shape. Many pin holes and it had already been coated inside sometime in it's lifetime. So I found some stainless steel plate from an old job and after a little bit of TIG welding I have a replacement till an original replacement tank can be found.

5 pointsI have a 1970 Raider 10, with the Tecumseh engine, that I just couldn't make run right, it would only run good at about half throttle or less. I put a new carb on it, and it made no difference. At the same time, the battery wasn't charging and the starter was very slow to turn. The starter finally gave up, stopped turning and sparked and smoked a little. I got a new starter and charging coil from AZ tractors and installed both. Now I have a new tractor. It's amazing how smooth this old techy runs now. I guess the purpose of this post is to say that if your old techy ain't runnin' just right, it may not be the troublesome techy carb, you may want to look closely at the coil.

5 pointsWell I finally had some time to get the generator mounted. One of the POs had modified it to fit an earlier tractor so I I took it apart and mounted it on the plate in the factory slots. They also modified the undercarriage but that actually made it sit higher off the ground on the 161 and 314 so that was a good thing. A new belt and it was ready to go. It works really well but I was surprised how much it dragged down the engine on the 314 when engaging the PTO. The 161 didn't even notice it was there. The 314 is so much quieter and more efficient though I'll still probably use it on that tractor if the need arises.

3 pointsCongratulations on your retirement Glenn. Reading your RS postings let's me know this is a good time in your life. Hopefully I will join your ranks in about 2 & 1/2 years. Tankman, that's a mighty fine looking 414-8 you have! And its still earning its keep during the Winter months too Yes Sir, this one has al o t of potential. I'm the second owner of this one. It was bought and used by the original owner to mow a 1/4 acre lot on a lake front, and groom the driveway with a brinley blade. All I've done with it since bringing it here three years ago is pull a trailer and lawn sweeper around. With a good waxing it will shine like new money. Ed, I do believe the 414 was basically the same as the 312 with the exception of the 414 has two more horsepower, the eight inch front wheels, but does not have an hour meter whereas the 312 does have an hour meter. Also I think the 414 cost a little more to purchase than the 312 LOL And you are welcome for my contributions to your SS fund LOL but you better be quick cashing your checks in September 2019 because I'll be racing you to the bank then to get mine cashed first

2 pointsI recently picked up a Mutt tractor. I was picking at it a little tonight and noticed how comfy the seat was on it. Looking it over I found that it was a Stedi Seat made by the Ohio rubber Co. I was just wondering if any one had heard of these seats? Another question I have is what can I put on the seat so that my bum does not turn black from the rubber seat? Gave it a quick once over with some Simple Green, starting to clean up nice. The rubber seat it fully suspended above the metal pan. Lets you sink in a little for some extra cushion. Looks like I should be able to take it apart so I can blast & paint the pan. Definitely want to use it on a build.

2 pointsSo Mrs. Fun Engineer was out picking up a CL desk and somehow got to talking to the seller about tractors. He says he has a wh generator that he'd like to sell. Here's a few pictures she took of his setup. I realize that it has been modified and I don't know if it currently works although he said it was used recently but what do you think it's worth? I think he wants to sell both motors with the generator but I'm really only interested in the generator. So so any suggestions on what it's worth and would it be possible to locate an original mount? Thanks.

2 pointsSon of a!!!!! You are right! I thought it was metal!!!!!!! I read so many posts about having to seal tanks, I assumed my was that old! I never looked closely at it!!!!!! What am I gonna do with all this HCL?!?!?!??? Any one need to disappear a body? Oh, well...... I'll find something rusty to clean up I am sure...... Feelin' kinda dumb....

2 pointsThe gas tank is plastic! Why would you put muriatic acid in a plastic tank??? There's no rust flaking or corrosion to eliminate.

2 pointsWheel horse generators are pretty pricey and fairly hard to find but it sure is nice not to have another motor to maintain. I bought a 5kw at the big show from a member here for $650 with the original mount and I think I did OK. Finding a mount alone could be a trick but it would be pretty easy to fabricate one. For that 3kw I would probably offer him $300ish.

2 pointsDid change the 414-8 seat, now a high back. TSC off the shelf. Foot rests are now anti-slip. Been using for years and works great, course skateboard grip tape. One $5 piece will cover both foot rests. I cut the tape with a paper cutter, straight cuts.. Also use the grip tape with the "micro holes" no bubbles.

2 pointsWhen I installed an 8hp electric start Kohler on my sons Suburban I made a custom belt guard from scratch for it. I put different pulleys on it to make it a little faster. I must have got lucky because the first time I tried it it worked perfect...

2 pointsTo any members in the Chicago area, there is a add on Chicago Craigslist for 2 1958 RJ 58s for 1500. Well they are both 60 suburbans and not RJs. The seller claims one is complete and the other is missing a carb only. Also incorrect, they both are missing many parts. He knows they are not RJs and it seems he is waiting for some poor soul that isn't familiar with RJs to take advantage of. I know we are all into different years and models and I just wanted to get it out there so no one here that is not familiar with the RJ model gets taken advantage of. Hopefully this thread is ok and in the right place.

Thanks to Bob aka rmaynard, Told me about the mid high seat from Northern Tool nice seat for the $$$$ found some seat springs on E->>> Now I sit above the steering wheel. Also went to Home Depot to get some safety walk tread for stairs. Fits nice on the running boards also it is reflective. So now just waiting for that W or S word. enjoy the picks.

2 pointsI see the correct belt guard there on the floor. Maybe getting that idler pulley spaced out a little or moving the other pulleys in to line them all up will help it work. Seems a shame not to use it on that nicely restored tractor. Could just be the pic is deceiving in the alignment of them. Belt looks loose on there too. 1/2" x 29" belt for the RJ. Some can be a real pain to get working correctly. Just ask @Ken B, we played with a Suburban belt for a while at Stevebo's M&G last Sat.

2 pointsNo Mike I have chains our drive is flat and I am only pushing it to the side and then I will blow it over to the side lot. Or if it is Icy. I need to get under the ice I have elderly people that need to have a clean driveway so that is why. Snow blower does not get down to the pavement a plow will get you close = minor shoveling.

2 pointsI made a bit more progress today. My first problem was that the shroud on the EFI engine was not setup for the spinning screen and flywheel driveshaft on the xi. I was able to order a shroud from an Exmark that still had the oil cooler cutout along with the proper front screen. As a bonus it also had the clean out plate kit already cut and included! My second issue was that the holes I needed on the PTO end of the engine were not tapped, but they were pre-drilled. I was able to drill and tap them to get the PTO stop plate and the lower heat shield mounted. I had to trim the lower heat sheild to fit around the ignition modules and the engine mounted fuses. The muffler I think is a bit lower than the stock toro muffler, but it seems like it will do OK. Here's the stock spacer that is stuck in the end of the Electric PTO, but since my shaft is longer I will have to have the "shaft portion" of the spacer milled off and recessed a little bit to hold the clutch tight. I have to get the oil drain pipe and oil temp sensor installed and then I think I am ready to drop it in! I do have a bit of a wiring adapter to make up but I am hoping that wont be a big deal. I also got another fun delivery for my project: Good to know that Miller ships them boxed up now, so no tweaked tires to relax before mounting!

2 points30 wt oil will become thick as molasses in freezing temps. It will NOT thoroughly lubricate your splash lubricated engine until it warms up. So basically, it's like running your engine without oil for a while when used in freezing temperatures. Try pouring some out of a bottle when it's frozen and you will definitely notice how thick it becomes and then imagine trying to splash it with a stick. That is what's going on inside your engine, unless your engine is equipped with an oil pump. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLeXpF1kzDU
