In that era it was a series number. The C-xx0 was the first style long red hood, solid mounted engines. The C-xx1 were a bridge change that included at least a shaker plate mounted engine and maybe a different hoodstand, the C-xx5 were the blackhood series that had the black topped hood, shaker plate and completly different hoodstand. The `xx` was the horsepower. After that they went to the 300, 400, 500 series.

Found it interesting that you edited your post @ "1054". I have been a fan of the 953/1054 for years; love the look of them and the comfort, bought my fourth one this summer. Due to the relatively high center of gravity and light weight I would be hesitant to install a front end loader on one, though I have seen them. I have a FEL on my GT-14 which is a much heavier tractor and it is still a bit scary when the bucket is raised high on uneven ground. As for durability I would put them up against any other . My first 953 has plowed the garden, pushed snow and mowed for me for 14 years with nothing but routine maintenance. It was a barn find that has no paint left; ain't pretty; but is beautiful to me. My second one was missing a few parts when I got it, but made it a custom. The third one is a project; it is a very early production 953 which will be restored. The forth is a 1054 I picked up at this year's Big Show, it will receive some special treatment when I build it. If you want one you better act promptly; before I buy them all!

9-29-1954 Willie Mays makes the catch On September 29, 1954, Willie Mays, centerfielder for the New York Giants, makes an amazing over-the-shoulder catch of a fly ball hit by Cleveland Indians first baseman Vic Wertz to rob Wertz of extra bases in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series. The catch has gone down as one of the greatest in the history of baseball. Willie Howard Mays was born May 6, 1931, in Westfield, Alabama. The “Say Hey Kid” learned baseball from his father, who played semi-professionally with a team from his steel mill. Willie joined the steel mill team at age 14, and then began his professional career at 16 with the Birmingham Black Barons of the ***** Southern League. He played home games for the Barons from 1948 to 1950, skipping road trips during the school year so he could attend high school. Upon graduation he was signed by the New York Giants, and made his debut at the Polo Grounds on May 25, 1951. Mays went hitless in his first 12 at-bats, hitting his first big league homer in his 13th. That season, he was named Rookie of the Year and helped the Giants to the National League pennant. In 1952, Mays was drafted into the Army. The Mays-less Giants barely missed the pennant in 1952, then felt his absence more acutely in 1953, when they finished the season with a 70-84 record. Upon his return in 1954, the Giants won the National League by five games over their archrivals, the Brooklyn Dodgers, and then met the Indians in the World Series. In the eighth inning of Game 1, with the score tied 2-2 and two runners on base, Indians first baseman Vic Wertz hit a fly ball 440 feet deep into center field. Mays turned, ran and then caught the ball over his shoulder with his back to the infield, before spinning and firing the ball back into the infield to keep the runners from advancing. The catch preserved the tie, and the Giants won the game on a home run by Dusty Rhodes in the 10th inning. When he was asked later about the catch, Mays famously replied, “I don’t rank ‘em, I just catch ‘em.” The Giants went on to sweep the 1954 World Series. Mays was named the National League MVP in 1954, and again in 1965. He played in a record 24 All-Star games, winning the All-Star MVP in 1963 and 1968. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979. His base running, power, fielding, ability to hit for average and outstanding arm in the outfield made him the prototype “five-tool” player for whom baseball scouts search. Any argument over who deserves the title “greatest baseball player in history” has to include Willie Mays.

953 Nut I saw the Wheel Horse you have pictured on your yellow trailer at the Big Show near Gettysburg this year. I did not get to meet you as I recall but I was in the Red Square tent a couple times during the show. Mike Biser built a 953/1054 transmission for me with the eight bolt differential as opposed to the original 4 bolt. The stronger transmission is going to go in a near perfect 1054 that I bought several years ago for $150. I have been putting off redoing until I have time and some reserve of new or barely used parts. Oil seals, wheel caps, bearings, rebuilt hydraulic pumps , etc. I should be able to get to this next Spring! The one in the left corner in this pic. I do have an original grill metal sheet and I have a chiche of the black and white or red and black seats.

Whoever decided to place lower cost LAWN Tractors in the box stores struck gold for the manufacturers but not for the consumer. People think they are buying a very hi quality machine for the money, it looks good , has a so called hi HP strong motor but at the end of the day, regardless of the brand name, they are disposable and in many cases NON fixable . This era of corporate "executive" planning closed the door on the garden tractors. I am sure we all know someone who spent good money, not cheap, for a box store lawn tractor and within a few short years they had to replace it. Just look around as we are driving each day, the yards are full of them parked with flat tires and tall grass around them. They are worth only their weight in metal. nobody cares, they bought it on credit and made small monthly payments to a 20% credit card over 5 or 6 years ! They are not even paying attention. Maybe I'm crazy, maybe I'm too old, but when I came home with a new Wheel Horse ( 1975 and 1987) and even the two I recently purchased , I felt like a kid in the candy store, I was excited, proud to own them. They are not lawn mowers to me, far from it, they have significance, they represent an era of USA manufacturing and design that has left the planet. I guess the generations today would indeed think I am senile for being excited about owning a "lawn mower". Truth be known, I could care less if I ever cut grass with any of them ! When I look at them I am brought back to my childhood when I first saw a neighbor plowing snow with one probably around 1960. thats what I see.

Why isn't there a market for $4k Garden Tractors? Maybe it is because of professionalization and specialization. I am a landlord, and I have 5 100+ year old buildings (duplexes and single family homes). Every one of the old buildings has a toilet in the middle of an unfinished basement. I asked one of my contractors "Why is the basement toilet always here?," and he had an interesting theory. He said that people used to work extremely hard on their yards. They didn't want to track mud in the house, and they used the basement toilet. I don't really know if he is right or wrong, but I think he is right about how people used to work on lawns. In addition, many young professionals are renting dwellings even when they probably should be buying. There are many theories on why millenials rent, but I wonder if they rent because they are mystified by basic handyman jobs. They are ignorant about basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry etc... If they can't even do the basics, maybe they should rent and let it be someone else's problem. This dynamic contributes to professionalization. So maybe there is a lowend market, and a high end market for lawn equipment. The middle market for handy guys working on weekends just isn't there anymore. I bought a vintage garden tractor because it cost $750 with all the extras. It is awesome, and I get excited about using it. But... I could never justify a 4k machine. I would just hire out my lawn care instead of purchasing the machine.

You guys have got me eyeballing all the old tractors now LOL. For years I was a 300/400 series only guy. I had a couple of Blackhood's and that was cool but was stuck on the 300/400 tractors. Then I got to know some of you guys personally, and your love of old Wheel Horse's started rubbing off on me. So I bought a 701, then had to have a C series so I picked up a C121 at the Big Show this year, all the while thinking there must be something about those 953's because Richard likes them and he's a pretty smart guy so yes that's on the list too now. Oh yeah you guys got me liking stacks now too. So I'm wanting to put a stack on the little 701 if I can find something quiet. I have a couple of extra Electra Glide mufflers but I'm afraid one of those will make the 701 top heavy and will tip it over when I make a hard left !

Glenn my soon to be wife works in the office at a powder coating facility, which means I have free access to powder coating. I have experimented with powder coating on many different types of surfaces and pieces of equipment, but I mostly powder coat the rim of my tractors and nothing else. I just like the finish of a good paint job better than powder coat. Don't get me wrong powder coat looks nice, but paint gets more glossy than glossy powder coat. I had an entire IH #2 dump cart powder coated and it looks very nice, but there are crevasses on it where the powder can't get to. Therefore when I had it at a show and it rained on it, it began to rust in those areas due to the heat treatment given to powder coated objects. Also when it comes to touch up, most places offer touch up kits that include paint cans and bottles of paint that have a little brush on the lid to cover up chip and scratches. Now her dad had a cub cadet 100 powder coated except the engine block and the transmission (for obvious reasons) and I think it looks great! Most powder coating places are not cheap and it just depends on how much you are willing to spend or if your local powder coating facility has a red color that can closely math the red on your wheel horse. I will tell you personally that if Id didn't have free access to powder coating I wouldn't do a whole tractor, but it sure as heck is worth having the rims done. I don't care for prepping rims for paint or painting them! lol That's just my . Mike

I remember going into the local WH dealer in the late nineties or early 2000s and seeing machines that cost well over 4500 dollars. I thought they were nice machines but way more than I could justify spending. If the current crop of homeowner wants to ride while cutting grass then he or she has a lot of cost friendly choices. If they have very large areas of grass then the zturns will mow circles around the current riders or the old WH's.If heavier tasks need to be handled such as tilling or loading then the Cuts or Scuts are there if you have the money. To me my WH's are like the swiss army knife. They are capable of doing a multitude of tasks well, without costing huge amounts of money. With that said when the Horses aren't up to the task out comes something bigger.Just saying.JAinVA

Completed a deal on a 1986 Ariens GT19. It is slightly less than what I was looking for in the HP range, but the engine had a complete rebuild done 8 years ago, and it had only been used for snow duty those 8 years. So engine should be ok. Comes with 3pt. hitch, 2 stage snow blower, cab and lights, front blade, mower deck and wheel weights. Very good condition and it a 1 owner gt. Comes with the valve holding on the side to operate front and read hydraulics independent. Now I am looking for a 3pt flail mower or a small bush hog. I already was on line, most of what they are selling today for the Cat. 0 says it needs a minimum of 25hp. to operate. Anyone have a flail or small bush hog they are looking to get rid of? Photos will be coming.

That is a fantastic build thread. Even if a person isn't planning to build a 3 point; it is worth reading just to see how well planned and exacted this build is. Actually Van and James brought it back to NC for me and he stored the 953 while I was recuperating from spinal surgery. Sorry I didn't get to meet you and so many others; First time there and so little time with so much to see. Was there a post done on the differential change out? I was wondering if the bull gear on the 953/1054 is larger than the smaller 12" tire units (like the GT-14 vs. Sundstrands on Electro etc.) If there is info out there on this swap I know some folks that would like to see it.

Glenn, I can not offer you any pros and cons to paint vs powder coat yet. However here is what I have done so far to my GT14. I have had the frame, wheels and steering components powder coated the red is RAL3003 and the wheels are an appliance white that the powder coated had in stock. They were sandblasted and coated in zinic for corrosion protection. The rest of the parts were sandblasted and painted with PPG JP209 high build epoxy primer to fill damage from corrosion. Let the sanding begin. They will then be shot with a nice coat of PPG RAL3003 single stage paint. The transmission was stripped cleaned and primered with zinic cromate primer then coated with RAL3003 red from a rattle can. So far I have $300 in to the powder coating $50 in the PPG primer and about $200 in zinic cromate primer and misc. sanding supplies.

Question for ya @Lane Ranger, what's with the groovy lookin hubs on the rear of the 1054?......looks like oil filters painted silver?? Cut the heads off some bolts & silicone em on there & everybody will think yer running a floating axle!!

Maybe the power coaters should have done it in RED! Then again.... JD??.... maybe not

There's nothing wrong with your stator. The 3 amp system uses a diode in one of the stator wires; that's why you won't get continuity.

Thanks Jim, I think the 301, 321 and 341 are the same, but the 181 and 241 use a smaller carb. Mine came with a 5/16 barbed fitting for the fuel, but it is metal and threaded, so it can be changed. The throttle linkage rod was included and a perfect match. The choke lever was to the rear of the choke shaft which not correct for WH. But not much of a problem to change. I understand they can be bought either way If you look closely at the choke design. I really didn't care for my rat rod and the way this 321 starts, I haven't had to use the choke. At $34.99 and free shipping, I'll never bother to clean or rebuild a Walbro.

On my C-101, I threw out the shaker plate and replaced it with 4, 3/4" high round spacers between the engine block and the frame. Of course, I had to make a new anchor for the vertical clutch arm which I bolted to the frame and a new support bracket for the muffler which bolted to the engine block Simple enough.

Here are a couple pics that may help. Most of mine are worn pretty bad also. BTW, your rod should have a spring washer retainer on both sides of the hood lever to keep it centered. C-120 has rollers at the top that pinches the hood to the stand. Also has some misalignment. The 875 has also has rollers on the rod. Not sure what they do except keep the lever centered. The raider 12 has single rollers. The Commando 8 has the double rollers. So, it looks like the short frames had rollers on the rod that don't appear to do anything but help to keep the lever centered, and they were eliminated on the later long frames. I don't think the shape of the notch is critical as it appears they are only there to provide clearance for the rod. The small rollers that slide under the hood pull the hood down to the stand are what locks the hood.

This past Spring one of my neighbors was in need of a new lawn mower tractor. In my neighborhood, we are all on 2+ acre lots. He knew about my herd and asked if I would like to sell one. I offered him my C-145A with a 48" deck. He needed to replace a Poulan with a 40-42" (?) deck. First words were how tight does it turn? "Left and Right", I said. He said that he would drop over to see it. Two weeks later he shows up at 8:00 am and wants to see it! My collection exceeds my storage so unfortunately it is under my carport and could use a bath. He looks at it and I offer it to him for what I paid. He's too worried about parts for it so passes. A week later I see a U-Haul trailer in his driveway along with a "little" Husqvarna from HD. Can we say K-46 transaxle? I haven't asked him about it as I am waiting for the tech questions next year. I will say this, my next door neighbor has an older Murray gear tractor with a 38" deck. In seven seasons, I have replaced the carb for him and this year diagnosed need of a new battery. The battery was interesting as he bought a new one from an autoparts store that was bad from the factory! He will probably keep using it until the wheels fall off.

Somehow some people get powder coating very cheap, but most of us dont. Powder coating is most durable but once it does get cracked or scraped its the hardest to repair. My plan is to have wheels powder coated because they take the most abuse especially mounting tires. The rest would ideally be coated with a spray gun paint with hardener but that may be as expensive as powder coating, I havent priced it yet. Powder coating just wheels for me was about $300. You may consider just doing touch ups on the rusty spots if shes just going to be a worker and get the most you can from the factory paint, which will be the best hands down.

ok guys i got the b80 (75 according to model number) parts machine home monday oh what fun that was so i been taking my 71 sears suburban 14 up there with my lawn cart (old beater cart from like the 80s) well dad asked me how are you planning to get this b80 onto the big trailer. i told him easy we going to pick up the back pf the parts b80 slide it in the lawn cart. thats what we actually did. it went smoothly. then last night i brought home a 73 wheelhorse model 10120 8. now the first b80 is a 74.. so i should have enough peices to put 2 machines together. i also brought home a couple pull start k181 kohlors. one has same tins has a magnum. and a few tec h series on risers like what was on the old wheel horses h60 and h70s but these ones came off snowblowers lol now the 74 b80 needs a shifter its rotted badly i brought home a 8 speed trans that has shifters still in it but the diff is gone in it will the shifter out of the 8 speed work in the 4 speed iwould think so lol. the 73 wheel horse looks like some parts was changed i dont know for sure but looks like someone put a 3 speed in it. i also found the carb for my blue magnum the carb needs a rebuild it will more than likely end up on the kohlor k181 with magnum like tins, i got the complete airfilter assembly off the blue magnum. i will upload either a video or pics in next couple days.

No Mike, no reference to the Kennedy's. The original owner was John Robert Horne. He owned and took good care of it until age and poor health made it so he could not take care of the tractor any more. After five years of it sitting in the barn I very fortunate enough to become the new owner of the tractor, mowing deck, and push blade. I promised Mr. Horne that the 416-8 would live with me as long as he was alive so that he would always know where it was at and and was being cared for. So far I have been true to my word and Mr Horne is about 80 years old now and every time I see him he ask about that tractor. With a big smile on my face I tell him its sitting in my pole barn gassed up and ready for him to put it to work. So anyway, I named the tractor John Robert, and there the story of how it got the name. Partner, I wish those two could make some little Wheel Horse babies! We'd be in the Wheel Horse manufacturing business for sure

Hard to believe It's been 2 months since I worked on this project. I got the boat winterized and put away for the winter this morning so the low rider project got some attention this afternoon. I had bought a non runner C-105 a few weeks ago just for the 8 speed for the LRer. It actually had a K321AS transplanted that the PO said hadn't run for years. After chasing grounds or lack of grounds for quite a while, I finally got fire and got it running by hand feeding fuel in the carb. This is what I found in the totally plugged tank shut off valve. It has a Walbro carb, so I didn't even check it out...just bought a new one from the jungle for $35. I hooked up a high temporary tank and It starts and runs perfect with no smoke, so the 321 is going in the LRer So this afternoon, the transplant began... The first job ...not my favorite...was to remove the hitch from the 8 speed. Then remove the 8 speed. Fit up the seat pan and fenders. Then Pulled the engine out of the C-105. Man I hope I can stuff that under the hood! That's all for today folks....Mrs K is calling me for dinner.

We have a couple more than four and love them! The 953 was so much in demand when first made by Wheel Horse that the 1054 was made for several years after. The 48 inch mower deck was the first 48 inch deck and was very heavy and well made. The snowplow was a 54 inch on this tractor. The Hein-Werner hydraulic pump gave you good rear and center rock shaft lift capability. The 10 HP Kohlers were the heavy industrial version which is why so many of these still have there original motors. If you use a tractor to work -this has a tremendous amount of power and flexibility.

Everybody is hitting all around the subject but no one has said. It's a disposable world out there. There is no more room for a piece of equipment such as a Wheel Horse in this world. As much as we would like it to be, this is the world in which we live now. You even see it in big trucks and farm equipment now. It's use it then throw it away.

I made that exact same statement on a similar thread not too long ago. Manufacturers are giving what the consumer wants, which is an inexpensive mower to cut their grass and do other light duty. I talked to a couple of guys who buy and repair lawn equipment and they both said the same thing. They can't sell an order garden tractor, regardless of brand, at that the tractor is worth. Their potential buyers tell them, why should they pay that much if one at Walmart costs the same or less. It doesn't matter it that Walmart mower will quit and become fodder for the scrap heap in a couple of years. They will just go buy another one.
