12 pointsDoing a little freshening on my dad's 161. Still a little work to do but it's starting to look pretty good.

9 pointsGot up this morning with a bad itch for some seat time...grass was getting pretty tall around the in laws house so I put the 48" deck back on the old 1277 and went to work...first time I've mowed with this tractor and I must say I was very impressed. The old girl cut through even the thickest grass with little to no effort and the big 48" deck made quick work of a big job. First time in my life I've actually had fun while mowing lol. The way these old machines are built still amazes me...I'd like to see one of these new machines still working like this 50 years from now

8 pointsPicked this up last night, not much to look at, but does have a nice k-91 I'm guessing a 401??? i really like the kid pedals the po had installed and the exhaust

7 pointsI guess the in the 60's , designers assumed grease fitting threads would never strip . Almost 50 years later , mine were . Problem is they drilled the tube for the shear-pin & Zerks before the flutes were welded on Thread were stripped & the drill chuck made it impossible to drill & tap these squarely for the new zinc coated 5/16 X 24" Zerk threads .....What to do Make a 2 foot 15/64" drill bit . THAT'S WHAT ! Red-neck engineering at its finest

6 pointsThis was gonna be a winter project, but, I guess I just work slow. EVERYTHING is painted (Rustoleum regal red) and am now getting around to nailing it all back togather. Sent the wheels and seat out for powder coating and gonna need to pick up some rubber..........then I can start on the newly acquired 753!

5 points4-30-1945 Adolf Hitler commits suicide On this day in 1945, holed up in a bunker under his headquarters in Berlin, Adolf Hitler commits suicide by swallowing a cyanide capsule and shooting himself in the head. Soon after, Germany unconditionally surrendered to the Allied forces, ending Hitler’s dreams of a “1,000-year” Reich. Also on this date in 1945, 953 nut (Richard D. Schmidt) was born in Syracuse, NY. I don’t know of any direct cause and effect relationship between my birth and Hitler’s suicide; but who knows.

5 pointsRedRanger Sorry we didn't meet. Time just kinda got short quickly when the rain started. I did meet some of the guys and had some very nice discussions. Several guys approached me on their own, because of previous ID info I posted and I'm very appreciative of their outgoing, friendly nature. Seems like a great bunch of people. I saw lots of stuff I'd never viewed before, including a D250.......what a beast of a machine. I got there about 7:20, but left a little after 11 am, because it was beginning to rain harder all the time, with no let up in sight according to the forecast. I'm not a big fan of standing around getting wet, with the temp in the low 40's, and a strong, constant, east wind in an open exposed field. I then stopped by a friend's lake home at Beaver Dam Lake about 12 miles S.E. of Mentone . I sold them a cottage three years ago and hadn't been back since then. I also mooched lunch (not really....my arm was twisted to stay) along with the visit, so overall it was a good day, IMO. The only thing that was bad about it was the rain......it really sucked.......and ended up spoiling everyone's fun, way too early. Visibility on the road was not good at all going home with a steady 20-25 mph east wind, heavy rain, and very low cloud cover. Hope every one made it safely home. Maybe next time...... Regards, Steve p.s. Before I left town, I also got to view the world famous Mentone Egg. I'd never seen that before. Unique to say the least.

5 pointsI used to road trip to Nascar races in a 76 Caprice Classic wagon. Had the 3rd seat, 454 big block ice cold A/C from an A-6 Frigidaire compressor and factory AM/FM/CB radio. Man I miss those days. Mentone is too far for me so:

4 pointsSteve, JA, ACMan and Red Ranger...it was a pleasure meeting you guys. Place was pretty cleaned out when I left. There was a good crowd there, even with the rain. I think I got to talk to almost everyone. It was good to get out again after a long winter.
-
4 points@ztnoo sorry we didn't cross paths. I did see your caprice there as well as saw you leaving headed South! I'd know the car anywhere I see it now! I did get to converse with @Lane Ranger and @stevasaurus had a present for me. @J.A. did very well and was still negotiating trades in the rain when we left. @Jake Kuhn was wandering around snatching up buys and eyeballing deals. Would have liked to hang around longer and shoot the breeze with everyone, but it got a bit frantic when the rain came down.
-
4 pointsWish I could attend but way too far. I do have something I am buying "kinda" from there with some help from some good people
-
3 pointsYes they sure make it nice...before I got the 1277 I mowed with an old White Yard-Boss T100 with 38" deck...selling it and upgrading to the was the best move I ever made...mowing is actually an enjoyable task now
-
3 pointsI found the camshaft spring then discovered the camshaft moving parts had too much friction to work properly. I have another camshaft on the way. I have cleaned and rebuilt the carburetor . The ignition switch was bad so I have another on order. I am going to use a solenoid in lieu of the heavy duty ignition switch. While waiting for parts I decided to build an engine stand; actually just added on to the the press I had built. All parts and the decals should be arriving next week.
-
3 pointsLoaded her up to take back to town in the morning...got some more mowing to do if it doesn't rain tomorrow...also robbed a seat off an old Montgomery Ward mower I'm getting ready to haul off for it. Not perfect and had to modify things a bit but it's a big difference over what was on it
-
3 pointsI wish the weather was better for us. I would have stayed longer. We should maybe start a little get together amongst ourselves this summer. It was a pleasure meeting everyone, I hope everyone got what they were looking for and made it home ok.
-
3 pointsOur Annual equipment auction was today and some decent pieces there. I just couldnt stick around. It will be hours before they get to this. They were selling all the small stuff first. Very big turn out this year. Would love to know what the anniversary 520 brings. 400 hours. But it is searching. Probably the ethanol gas.
-
3 pointsMy buddy texted me. The c-175 with a k-series 12 went for 450. The Anniversary 520 went for 1200 and the 416-8 Onan went for 650. Gosh I wish I was there to bid on that 520.

3 pointsWell, I got the original motor for the C101. He finally came down to $100. It was not rebuilt from what I can see. I mounted it on the tractor. Added a coil and starter solenoid and starter which were missing. Made 2 battery cables. It will run on starting fluid. I was going to replace the fuel lines today but when I looked in the tank there was too much garbage and rust. There was a ton of debris on top of the transmission. So off with the fenders and it got hosed out...... gas tank too! It's sitting in front of the fan drying now. There's a pic of the shutoff valve, it's plugged! There's a crack at the seat mount ... will weld tomorrow. And that muffler has to be changed. I probably should take off the float bowl.
-
3 pointsBe cautious. The plastic lens piece that covers the lamps is no longer available and this model was unique to a short production period so pretty seldom seen on eBay or elsewhere. LED replacements are likely only option for better brightness. these C161's with fiberglass hoods did not have same light set up as the other blackhood models of the era.

3 pointsWell guys, I finally got the time to cut the rims and roll the strip of metal and get the rims back together. I have one rim completely welded, the other rim is just tacked together. I did TIG weld it back together, makes a stronger weld and less to grind. I plan on blending the welds, having the rims blasted and then paint them. I am aiming to make the rims look like they belong this wide with out any telltale signs of the addition of a strip of steel. The rims were 7 inches wide, they are now 10 inches wide.
-
3 pointsDeck assembled, decals installed, blades balanced and installed. Installed deck onto 520-HC. Still need to test out bagger whenever grass starts to grow.

2 pointsI haven't heard about goat heads in a long time. I grew up in Colorado and they were everywhere.
-
2 pointsProfessor, I must say that you did a great job of mowing with the 1277. My wife even comments on how nice the yard looks after mowing with the WH. Best decks ever made in my opinion. I have to ask though if you have a problem with the goat heads puncturing the tires. I know from experience that you don't want to go barefoot in your part of the country.

2 pointsSomething tells me SeaFoam isn't going to work on this one. If the PO blows you off, mention you are going to talk to the DA about filing charges for fraud. In reality, the DA probably wouldn't bother, but the PO may not know that
-
2 pointsI saw that too. I'd disagree though. Looks like a nice restoration, not original. Maybe he meant original as in "not a John Deere that was turned into a Wheel Horse"? Like, "original" Wheel Horse?
-
2 pointsall put back together and she runs great.just need to swap the gas tank and get some new decals for her.

2 pointsThere is no way that was mowing a few days before there would not be any power and removing it would require pulling the engine apart.
-
2 pointsDad's been gone eight years and and the tractor hadn't been used in almost 10 years. Luckily, he always did a great job of storing his equipment. I rolled it out of his basement this spring, changed the fluids, and put in a new battery and it fired right up.

2 pointsIs there a way to add this WH Senior to the Senior/Lever Steer registry? It would be nice to keep track of this one especially if the owner isn't a member here.
-
2 pointsWell, for me, hopefully I'm providing a few useful hints. I've already posted my vehicle pics.......you definitely aren't going to miss or confuse what I will be driving. My wife volunteers a lot at the local hospital and goes to lots of meetings, seminars, conferences, etc. So she has the clear plastic name tag thingies with safety pin clasps for name cards. This afternoon, I created my own......complete with RS user name, given legal name, and city of residence.....which I will be wearing, btw. If someone can't figure out who I am with these clues, I'll have to totally recalibrate my approach.
-
2 pointsWe all need to take a break from time to time. priority one has to be doing well with your internship to secure long term employment, keep focused on that and can pick up on the Rat Rod when time is better.
-
2 pointsSince I've never been to the meet at Mentone, or any Wheel Horse gathering for that matter, I have no personal acquaintance or introduction to anyone from here at RS who will be in attendance. For that reason, I'd like to describe myself. I assure you I won't be dressed in formal wear like Lane. I don't have a pic of myself readily at hand, but I'm 6'4" in height, about 275 lbs, and have a pony tail. I'll be in jeans most likely with either a navy blue hooded sweatshirt, Carhartt jacket, or if it's precipitating enough, perhaps a yellow rain slicker jacket. If you can't identify me by this description, look for the vehicle below. It's a beige '85 Chevy Caprice Estate Wagon. I'm sure it will be the only thing like it at Mentone. Only 66,500 miles on her. My name is Steve (ztnoo) and I'm from Gas City. Hope to meet lots of you Wheel Horse fanatics.
