So I wanted a Wheel Horse for a while, then I got one. One is good right? Well one soon turned into four. I'm fine, only gonna collect made be fore 1968, I have control of this. Then I found this tractor and had to have it. This tractor thing is not an addiction, is it? What I brought home is a McLean Husky made in Indianapolis some time around the 50's or 60's. Not sure on the year, there is not a lot of info on these machines. I did read that McLean was acquired by Wheel Horse, but I don't know if this info is accurate or not. This thing is in really bad shape and has been altered by a previous owner. I'm really hoping that I can find enough info to get this thing back in shape. I'm thinking this project will quite an challenge. Below is the transmission. From what I've read it should be belt drive to the transmission, the trans consists of a selector for different chain drives 2 speeds or a reverse gear set to a chain drive. Then belt drive on each side back to a sprocket then finally chain drive to each rear wheel. This really doesn't leave a differential for the drive wheels, to accomplish that they ran rods from the steering to the tension pulleys for the post transmission belts to loosen the belt on the inside of the turn. Complicated but sounds like it would work, hopefully I can make it work. I'll start a new thread on the restoration once I get started on it. If any one has any info or pics of one of these, I would be extremely grateful!

So I bought an Ariens Compact 24 last fall (used) but after this mild winter I knew I should have bought a bigger unit. So now that it's spring it's a great time to score bargains on snow blowers. Found this Ariens Deluxe 30 for sale in Massachusetts by a couple who were moving to California for a great price. It's amazing how small my 24" unit looks next to the new one!! Mike.....

If you have the time, these two piece seats can be saved. This is what I started with. The back was broken off. And the finished seat. I was able to save the WH emblem and sew it into new vinyl. Save a Horse.

4-28-1965 My Name is Barbra is Barbra Streisand’s debut television special Barbra Streisand’s breakout year as a singer came in 1963, when she released her first two albums, won her first two Grammys and began appearing live in some of the most prominent nightclubs in the country. By the following year, she was a showbiz phenomenon, earning further nominations from the Grammys and Tonys after wowing Broadway critics and audiences in her first leading role, as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl. Yet even then, in a Time magazine cover article in 1964, it was noted that “Many people still say Who when they hear her name.” That probably changed once and for all on April 28, 1965, when millions of American television viewers tuned in to a solid primetime hour of the 22-year-old Streisand in her first-ever TV special, the triumphant My Name Is Barbra. My Name is Barbra was the first special to be shot and aired under a $5 million, 10-year contract signed between Streisand and CBS in June 1964. Quite apart from the money, what made the deal so extraordinary was the creative control it gave to Streisand. She chose to exercise that control by eschewing many of the conventions of the then-popular musical variety show genre. Rather than shooting only in a studio, Streisand and her crew filmed one of their major sequences on location in the fur department of Bergdorf Goodman, where Streisand vamped in exotic fur coats and specially designed hats by Halston to a medley of poverty songs, including “Give Me the Simple Life” and “Brother Can You Spare a Dime.” And rather than filling out the bill with big-name guest stars—a safe strategy for a young and still-rising star—Streisand performed every number alone. “You can imagine how nervous that made the network,” Streisand later remarked, “when they learned that there would be major guest stars, not even any minor ones—just me and a bunch of great songs and some wonderful musicians.” However nervous they might have been, CBS executives were thrilled with the results. My Name is Barbra was a huge critical and ratings hit on this night in 1965. It won two Emmys and a Peabody Award and helped make Barbra Streisand truly a household name, further ensuring the success of later Streisand CBS specials like Color Me Barbra (1966) and The Belle of 14th Street (1967).

Well, everyone inspired me to give a resto a shot. Bought this 1056 that the seller said had a factory re-powered 12hp K301S. Guess not having the generator isn't a bad thing, but what do I know? Wheel Horse tires must be original. Not bad to get 50 years out of a set of tires. Drained the trans-axle and it looked like and was the consistency of pancake batter. Thick pancake batter. The wiring was done by someone, who, well, someone whose daddy didn't teach him right. Lots of bailing wire to be replaced with proper hardware......42" deck has some cancer but seems to operate okay. I'm sure I will have a lot of questions in the coming months. Sure hope for a before after picture down the road like I see on here all the time.

Well... Everything I need to finish off the bodywork has arrived, filler, primer, topcoat etc but I found a slight problem! As I started to clean up the fender pan I kept finding more and more stress cracks! I'm not surprised as WN has had a huge amount of being thrashing about and the arch bits of the fender pan were not as strong as they could of been.. The hard part was coming up with a way of adding strength that didn't change the look of the fender pan... Until... A few welding burn marks! I need to tidy up a few welds but you won't see the strengthening frame unless you on your hands and knees looking under the arch.. Oh, and it's added a huge amount of strength that should stop things from flexing The underside of the fender pan has been cleaned up and red oxided.. Filler on, filler off! I hate fillering but it's got to be done.. The bonnet got a light skim of filler too.. The extra cooling slot I cut in the front were made wider so they match the originals, a new bit of "grill mesh" was fitted behind as well.. The top of the bonnet/hood had got to the point where it looked good and felt smooth.. Only one way to find out, hit it with primer.. Which I did and left it to dry overnight. Much to my shock the next day I found only a couple of high spots, a small low spot and a few pin holes in the filler.. So... More sanding, 3 good coats of primer, flatten back the primer and hit iot with 3 more good coats..... A bit of wet and dry work today will leave a very nice smooth finish for the top coats I have been working on the smaller panels as well, a bit of sun to help dry them.. Quite fun as I had to keep moving bits inside to avoid rain/hail/snow showers! Here's the next shower approaching! Getting the front of the hood looking good has been interesting, lot's of fiddly corners to flatten down. You can see where I have started smoothing out the primer with the help of a guide coat.. And that's the state of play at the end of today... I'm now away from the workshop for 4 days, it's going to be nice to get away from all that filler dust!

That was a cool video. Sounded a bit like the flight of the bumble bee but even that was cool. I know you're no stranger to mountainous terrain but please be careful, especially where those gully washes are forming on the lower bank. It wouldn't be hard to get pulled over the side in one of those. Talk about a wild ride! I'd love to see how you have your camera mounted to hold it so still to get the clean video. Nicely done. Siskel and Ebert would have said...

Yes the condenser goes on the (-) side of the coil. The battery power goes to the (+) side of the coil. Easy way to remember - Most times the condenser connects to the points. The (-) side of the coil goes to the points. The condenser does not care which end of the (-) wire it goes to. The body of the condenser needs to be grounded to the engine or chassis metal. New paint can prevent a good clean ground connection. Garry

Mentone lies about half way between Warsaw in Kosciusko Co. & Rochester in Fulton Co. in Northern Indiana, about 27 miles apart. NOAA forecast for Rochester - http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=41.0648... NOAA forecast for Warsaw - http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php... They essentially say about the same thing......40-80% rain after 2 pm Saturday. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Sounds like you better get your business done basically in the morning. Of course, this is Indiana in the spring and things can change within a few hours, if not a few minutes...... I won't be dressed like Lane (above) who is dressed for Master of Ceremony duties. I may be in Carhartt coveralls with a golf umbrella. Sounds like a complete, full range outdoor wardrobe might be a good thing to haul along for this meet.

That is bigger than pinholes. I would recommend getting patches welded in.

Ya'll are probably right. I had questioned myself as to which would be more appropriate. Near total restore or, as you suggest, back to work form. Since he never saw any need to dress it up, but only keep it running well, that makes the most sense! Thanks Achcto and Professor!

The folks I bought it from are moving from Massachusetts to California this summer and that's why it was up for sale and they couldn't wait for next winter when snowblowers command good money. Like all good negotiators do, I offered $600....but the price was firm at $700 and I was happy to pay it. Now I just hope I never need it!! Mike.......

Being the sort of person your father was, there would also be no fault in getting it mechanically sound and leaving it in its work clothes. It does have a nice look to it as it is.

Here's a video of the mount. Obviously home made. Used 1/2 galvanized pipe, the camera support from an old tripod mount, some rubber hose for shock absorbers and bolted it to the fenders. Still shakes some. I may try to mount the camera just in front of the steering wheel.

Thanks guys....very much appreciated. This was my fathers Wheel Horse that he loved. He has been gone almost 10 years now and with my moms recent passing, I am sorting out what to keep. Hard to let go anything, but particularly something he thought so much of. He was a function over form sort of person and never did much in the way of restoration.....I think now I will do it for him.

Depending on the crack size you could "V"it with a dremel and carbide bit. The fill it with JB Weld and sand it smooth in the mating surface area. Would be worth a try to me before removing the hydro pump/motor, then splitting the transaxle case and swapping all the internals...

My daughters coined the phrase, we picked up a non runner for a silly price and instead of pushing it did a little triage. Got it running right in front of the PO and drove it on the truck. He was shocked. I have a few sets of jumper wires , ignore the tractors wiring and just wire the ignition hot to the battery with the jumpers, jump the starter direct , starting fluid and the gas iv and see what happens. Just pull off one of the jumpers to kill it or ground it out to shut it down. Saves times guessing over the wiring and safeties problems.

I would still consider giving the 867 a chance, K181s are not that hard to come by. Just my opinion, but I have a soft spot for without running boards.

I'm no expert, but I've bought two of these seats and they are very comfortable and a direct bolt in to the Wheel Horse seat hardware. Go to GriggsLawnAndTractor.Com and search seat TM333BL. It's $62.00 plus shipping. It is a high back seat which I think makes a lot of difference when you are on your tractor for awhile. Jim

Heck, that looks more complete than ones I've picked up to restore. Nice 867 you have there.

I use what i call a gas iv to start up suspect tractors. Its a plastic liquid soap bottle with a threaded nozzle on one end and i have one hole in the side near the bottom. I fill the bottle about half way with fresh gas holding my finger over the hole then put the cap on with a long piece of hose slipped over the end nozzle. The other end goes to the carb inlet. The bottle has a wire loop taped to the bottom so it can be inverted and hung up higher then the carb. A simple gravity feed and i used it many times to get the stubborn engines started quickly to be sure you have a good runner before pulling and flushing the tank and changing the lines.

That is a very sweet looking set up. One safety tip on the dual rear wheels, keep the pressure on the outer tires low to prevent the possibility of damaging the rear axle if the rear tires are on uneven surfaces.

Now that looks like great seat time! Put the "old road" on the map, Wheel Horse Proving Grounds.

If I had the room to garage a mower set up like that I would definitely be a buyer. I used to help a high school friend mow a country club/golf course in the late 60's and would pull reel mowers with ford 8n tractors. What a blast. We would also take our girl friends with us at sundown in his Ford convertible and drive around the golf course to turn on the sprinklers on the greens..............
