since my collection keeps on growing,,,,,, I needed a better way to haul my collection to the shows. my 28 foot enclosed is full of tractors that only go to shows and my old narrow car trailer just wasn't that safe to haul more then 3 tractors at one time. so i talked the wife into a home equity line of credit and proceeded to gather prices on different options that would meet my needs and give room here at home. my wife's 92 year old grandma is living with us and my son is graduating from college and also need to move back home for a month or so till he and a friend start their new job and can rent an apartment together closer to his new job. I looked into a new enclosed trailer, what i really wanted but decided it was just to expensive to get what i wanted and needed, so plan B, I check alot of different brands of landscape trailers. and once again ran into trying to find one that fit the budget, cheap and good quality. Finally decided on an Appalachian trailer. the good part was that they had just what i was looking for sitting at the factory in Ohio and didn't ave to wait for 4 to 6 weeks to be built so I would have for the little guys show May 20, 21. It showed up in Manheim Pa in a week. i picked it up yesterday morning and the took it for an hour ride up to Dale's mower service and picked up so parts that I had ordered and then proceeded home. got home and the wife wanted to go to supper and some errands. got home and checked c/l to find a wheel horse snow blower for $ 40.00 listed. called the guy and he said i was the 3 rd caller on it in 15 minutes since it was listed. i told him i can come right now if it wasn't promised to anybody else and it wasn't to late, it was 8:30 or a little later. he told me to come on over, so i asked him if i ha room to turn around a 20 ft trailer and he said no problem, he was a real nice guy and had just sold his house that day and was moving to a smaller place in York and a house in Florida, but the new trailer got christen with a trail blazer 7, not sure the trailer was big enough for it lol. so now here are pictures of the trailer, all of my trailers, the trail blazer 7 and things to come. the new trailer is a 82"x20' 10k. and a special shout out of thanks to Charlie Cully and Don Varos for all of their help eric j

My Dad just called me and told me there is going to be a show on TV tonight about Wheel Horses. So I checked into it. The show he is referring to is on RFD channel at midnight central daylight time tonight which would be 12 AM here in the mid-west. The show is called Classic Tractor Fever. This particular episode is a repeat titled "Built For Work" from 2015. The description reads; Classic garden tractors! From Wheel Horse to Ford and more, we salute these small, but powerful classics! That is word for word from my cable provider on screen channel guide. Some of you may have seen it if you follow the show I reckon. I have been aware of this show, Classic Tractor Fever, but I've never watched it. So I'm not familiar with the format of the show. I think it's kind of an amateur made show where they interview owners about their tractors at shows. I've got my DVR set to record. I just wanted to let you all know in case anyone else is interested. It will probably rerun later in the week sometime also, I know some of the music shows on RFD are. Check your listings in your area and time zone. Todd

Replaced the drive belt yesterday. It's hard to appreciate the way these machines are built until you take them apart. Wow!

We went on a road trip today to pick up my wife's first tractor. Got it home and after an hour or so of tinkering we had it running...she spent the next thirty minutes driving it up and down the road in front of our house and I think she is hooked Not sure if that's a good thing or not. Also met two very nice RedSquare members whom we purchased the tractor from...big thanks to Daddy Don and his son (not sure of his screen name here) I don't think I have seen my wife THAT excited in a long time. I'll try to get some better pics tomorrow it was getting pretty dark by the time I finally got her to park it.

Wondering what year this horse may be......thinking 1963, but not sure of all the small differences. It needs some love, but started right up with a squirt of gas and jumper cables so should not take that much to get it to move under its own power. THANKS!!

Steven Spielberg they ain't, but it is a good series and they have produced a one hour Garden Tractor special each year for the past three years.

Pulling the head and discovering what's inside is like an autopsy. It can give you insight into not only what's wrong, but the kind if life it's led.

Just enjoy your kids when they are young because time flies and you blink and they are gone off to college or out on there own. I miss the days of working out I the yard with my son. He was so proud to pull the lawn sweeper or trailer around the yard with the 400 or 854. just spend as much time with your kids in what ever they decide to do. One of our best moments was making the 8hr trip to the first Wheel Horse show he was only 5 at the time.

My wife and I went to meet our new granddaughter this weekend. I got a closer look at the rj and took some more pictures. Don't know what I will do with it yet. I don't know much about this model tractor so any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I know what you mean. Last weekend when I took my tractors to the blessing of the plows , my uncles where checking out the tractors. They walked around them, and gave me and my cousin some crape about not being AC's or Simplicity's. ( If you don't already now our family sold AC's ag tractors ) As they started looking a little closer they commented how well these tractors where built . Then I told them about the RJ's and what they could do being 1958/59's only 4hp . Then my son fired up the 58 on the first pull , they where amazed ! The day before the show I was looking for a pully so I went to the local Simplicity dealer. ( the reason we didn't sell lawn/garden) He was heckling me too , when the original owner of the hardware store walked in. He asked me what I was working on and he said that's not orange what are you thinking. So I showed him a picture of the RJ's , said he never saw one . Mind you his family owned the store from the late 1800's to the early 2000's selling AC's tractors until the 60's then getting into the simplicity line . So when I showed him the picture he said I understand now . The more people that see these Horse's the more they appreciate them .

Well I had a final inspection before I put the fenders back on She said it passed The fenders cleaned up real nice I think they are from a newer Xi tractor. I had to fix one of the wires so the rear lights would work. But that wasn't to serious. Here is a quick shot of the other 520lxi that came with the package deal. Shows how good of shape the other one is. . Then one more shot before the rear end gets covered up Fenders bolted down seat on ready for first test drive. One little tip before you put the fenders on make sure you put the little bolt holder thing for the break pedal on before you install the fenders. I almost made that mistake lol. Pretty sure you would have to remove the fenders to get that piece on and it's like the last thing you would do. Ready for test drive.

It looks in real nice shape. Good luck with your new purchase. Now you need another horse to handle the mowing duties so you don't have to remove the loader.

OK-I think we got this figured out. It's a good thing my daughter is patient with me. This muffler is on the C-161. We actually run the exhaust pipe all the way through the muffler and cap the one end. That allows the pipe to be welded on both sides which gives it more rigidity. Jim

I ended up going with the D250. It is in amazing shape for its age. It starts right up and purs like a kitten. The deck had been completely gone through although he said the hydraulics to raise and lower are no longer there. So there is a rear pto but no hydraulic 3 point hitch either. Not sure if thats tied together. Ideally i'd like to set it up to have that so the deck raises and lowers. I havent mounted it yet because I need to remove the loader which I dont want to do yet. I was a little apprehensive since its much bigger than the "lawnmower with a loader" I wanted. But Im feeling better about it. For $2500 in its condition I think I'm doing ok. The steering is the only issue which he said is common. Had a lot of play however it doesnt like skip or anything. Of course with the loader and no power steering its not easy to turn. Hppefully thats better with the mower deck and no loader if I play on mowing with it. Any suggestions on how to fix the steering and how to set up the raising and lowering of the deck? Here are some pics, I go the wider wheels with it (which I have put on) and the weight box which we just took of to transport.

I went to meet my new granddaughter and took the motor and new parts to my son to help me with assembly. Next thing I know he is cutting and grinding on my motor with tools I have never seen before . All I could do was watch. I did think to take a picture of one tool. I thought this was funny because he has thousands of dollars wort of equipment to grind or sharpen about anything and he is using a hand crank valve cutter. sorry it's blurry but he was turning a valve. Everything went well till the cam. The cam actuator springs were broke. Is this a common problem or am I just lucky to have an unusual issue? lol The good news is we managed to locate and order new ones. The valves are installed as are the new piston and rings. I will complete the build when the parts arrive hopefully next week.

not sure if you r aware but the starter will fall apart when you remove it from the tractor if your not careful, the machine screws that bolt *** to the motor hold it together as well, just a heads up incase you didn't know

There are plenty of pulley/sheave calculators on the net which will save you some time and money vs the trial and error process. Here is one you can use. http://www.blocklayer.com/pulley-belteng.aspx Built one a while back that did around 40 mph and if I remember correctly, it had a 1 3/4 - 2" pulley on the trans but it had an 8 speed trans with 1 1/8 axles too. I used an idler pulley to keep the belt routed for the most belt contact around the small pulley. Also used a 1/2" Kevlar belt so it could make that tighter radius better than a 5/8" belt could. The 12 hp Kohler was set at 3600 RPM so you are going to go quicker just with the RPM output of that engine but mine also had a jack shaft with more pulleys to increase the drive pulley speed. I'd guess with your pulleys and that RPM it would be close to what that tractor was spinning. The gear oil in the trans was replaced with motor oil for reduced friction and at that speed it would be splattered around instead of needing to cling to the gears to distribute lube. MAKE SURE the brake band and drum are clean, clean, clean and completely free of grease and oil by soaking them in solvent. I just used gasoline. When applying the brakes hard on that tractor, the rear wheels would actually spin in different directions just like if it was jacked up because the brake drum would lock. Certainly not the best braking system for those speeds but it would stop pretty quick and enough to control it. Definitely do some research for setting up the front end. A little caster and toe in make a lot of difference. You need to be in control of it. Don't use the old WH tie rods either, buy new adjustable and better quality because you don't want one of those to fail at higher speeds!

I did swap the motor and the transmission input pulley on a 551 almost 40 years ago. Your comment on the ambulance is spot on. We lived on a side road so I tried in on the blacktop. I quickly learned the error in my judgement. No, I didn't crash it but believe me, the steering on a 551 wasn't designed for those speeds. I drove it back to the house in 1st.

@buffaloman my wife said she would mow your father-in-laws yard for a Wheel Horse, and we are 700 miles away!!
  32. 2 points
If you were to go with two 4" pulleys it would double your speed; if you did what you are proposing it would be advisable to have an ambulance standing by the first time you used it! I doubt that a small 2" pulley would be workable as a driven pulley, probably too much slippage on take off........ One thing you must consider is that the brakes were not made for high speed operation. If you do give it a go, please take a video of it, we would love to watch!

haha! im not sure about that yet , im pretty new to this whole thing , I can promise youll see me there and it will be my first time , which seems weird because I live right in Gettysburg and have been to the south mountain fairgrounds plenty of times . unfortunately the tractor needs a few minor parts I think to get it running. but ive been zeroing in on here for what I need to make that happen. Thanks to all the help on here.

It's not missing an arm, it never had one. It is a pulse pump and uses crankcase pressure changes to move the diaphragm up and down inside the pump.

Let me know if you have any problems getting that pump to work. I may have the parts you need to fix it. I am located not far from you in Westminster, MD.

2nd day of trail work / clean-up yesterday My bud Jeff snapped these . I took some with the quadcopter but forgot to put the memory card in We picked up enough crap along the trails & route 16 to fill 3 or 4 full size garbage cans . We split up into 2 groups & probably only covered 1/4 of the area . I started the brakes on the Cobalt after I got home yesterday but pooped out about 5:30 . Ordered a Pizza & hit the hay .

i'm of a different theory and may be all wet on this, but did you check the fan gear area. like i said earlier, the couple of times that i had hard steering, that working grease into the fan gear ares made all of the difference in the world. you mat be reducing the friction by changing other areas but not actually fixing the problem just my . the tires and weight really should not be an issue since other tractors were built with that combination and don't have a similar issue eric j

Tiller works, but cobbled up connector isn't gonna hold up to actual tilling use. I tore up some dirt and my cable in yard today, sheesh! Oh, well, it works if now I only Knew how to use it! Pushed tractor pretty hard and with no brakes it was hard to control. I now have the brakes fixed, may try later.
