This lighted sign hung high over Norm's Wheel Horse Barn in St. Charles, Mo. from 1974 to 1996. When the business was sold in 96, the sign was given to Norm as a keepsake from the business. The sign then sat in a barn for the next 17 years. Two weeks ago I acquired the sign back from Norm. After almost 40 years of enduring the elements, the sign now hangs proudly inside my son's shop above several Wheel Horse tractors. I think it is a fitting retirement for a survivor. The first picture was taken in 1988 where the sign hung above Norm's. The second picture is where the sign hangs today.

Here is my C-120/180. 18 HP Briggs Vanguard, 3500# 5 lug wheels and spindles. Custom front bumper and copy of 2" receiver hitch. I repainted it a couple years ago has original decals. The front axle pivot has been rebuilt. I also rebuilt the rear hubs by borring them out and press fitting new sleeves and keying them. I bought the tractor new in 1977.

I'm really proud of my find and purchase today. I have been shoveling to long. Little winter rebuild and repair and should be good to go. This is a McCormick #100 made to be pulled by cub farmalls. Hopefully the 520 can handle it. It's got more HP than a cub when new. If not I always have something that will. Looks like a good setup though.

VinylGuy provided a 50th anniversary 416H decal kit.... And here is an after: AGAIN... THANK YOU KEN520HC for the awesome paint job and THANK YOU VinylGuy for the sweet decal kit!!! And, here is one more after...I even painted up a nice hood ornament from an extra hub cap 'Horse! Thanks again for the help from Ken and VinylGuy!!!!!

Well it is Wednesday night so we all know what that means.........another fun night of tractor club! We added a couple of heaters out in the barn and it made it nice for all of us to get some work done. I also added a stereo so we had some tunes to listen to. The music made things a lot more fun as we had a few kids thinking it was a dance off competition! These kids crack me up! Sanding commenced and they all seemed a lot more energized tonight. We were able to make some progress and a few things are very close to being ready for primer. I was able to snap a few more pictures of the kids hard at work! Hope you enjoy!

And, here is one more after...my only contribution to the paint job was the gold hood ornament... Again, a special THANK YOU to Ken520HC for a great paint job and VinylGuy for the sweet decal kit.

The day I bought my beat up 1045 at auction, I came home and unloaded it and put stuff away for the night. I went inside and got on my computer, imagine that. I got an email from Ebay saying an auction came up with 1045 in the title. I clicked on the icon and it was a complete set of repo decals for a 1045 and it had an original Owners Manual and a special made seat cushion that was very nice and heavy duty! It wasn't like the $25.00 one's that bakt4kids sells on Ebay, but much nicer. It had one bid on it and it started at $52.00. I had to wait a couple of days for the auction to end. I made sure I was in front of my computer when the auction ended. I bid a ton on the pile and it went up to $54.00 and some change! Nobody else bid on it and I won it for the $54.00 and it was free shipping from Canada! Wahoo! It took 2 weeks to get the stuff and it seemed like forever! Everything is really nice and good quality. I hope I didn't outbid a Redsquare member, but I had to have the stuff, I figured it was gonna be mine due to the circumstances of finding it on the same day as I bought the tractor! Check it out...

Do you have a copy of the service manual? What I would do is remove the valves, clean them up on a wire wheel and look for any obvious signs of burning. Check for excessive slop in the valve guides. If everything looks ok a light lapping with fine paste. I think there are just valve stem seals on the inlet valves, replace them. Clean as much carbon as you can out of the ports and combustion chamber. Try hard not to let all that loose carbon get into the bores and around the rings. I never touch the carbon on the top of the piston (unless its there in big chunks), but that's just me - there is always debate about whether you should disturb that. I would also check that the cylinder heads are flat, and if need be lap them on some wet and dry paper on a piece of glass.

Nice find! Lots of manure spread on here.. An old implement dealer here in town has a spreader that they pull in parades with a sign that reads: "This is one piece of equipment that we DONT' stand behind"!

well, lets put mine up again. i inherited my c-101 from grandpa, it was a hard worker then, but always taken care off, the engine has been replaced once because the original kohler locked up somehow the tranny has also been rebuilt once i think since it has parts from at least 4 different transmissions currently it is in pieces for a complete rebuilt to become a beautiful worker Koen
  11. 2 points
I submit for your consideration my "Hot Rod 953. The origional transmission was locked up and I replaced it with a 6 speed. The Harley muffler makes it sound Kool and the flipper hubcaps just needed to be there. It has a 48 inch deck and has pulled a trailer around lots of tractor shows.

I originally got Marvin as a beater / back up mower. Was ugly enough. Had a bad Hydro and rusty. It ran sweet and was a blast to drive until the trans got hot. I figured it would be all right to run the blower. i used it to help stain my fence also: Then Vinyl Guy convinced me to go custom. Had to get new sheet metal and a trans at the show. Rebuilt it in July: Took him to the Steam Pageant: Martin will be fitted with a Generac Jenny or the tall chute. Also Has a clevis hitch installed to pull the 10 " Moldboard and a slot hitch for the 8"

This month should be fun! This month we are featuring Custom Workers-ALL years. Post them up and give us a description of the work that went into customizing your tractor. I am looking forward to this one! I posted my 1988 520HC that I fabricated a 3 point hitch with a friend (who did most of the design). This tractor has turned into my very best worker for sure. It is on mower duty now a days. This machine will NOT be included in this month's contest just here to start us off.

Quick update... Got the front sliding doors done. Bought the exterior light from the local flea market last weekend but still needs to be wired. Momma did not like the white windows and had suggested I go with the green so they got painted today. This weekend if all goes well, my cousins Timbo and Toddbo will be up to pull the wires through and get me some light!! I also hope to get the wood stove up and running too. Here are a few pics...

Here's my first post on Red Square. Love the site, by the way. I've had this 855 Wheel Horse for a few years and it was always a good tractor. Back in 2010 I got laid off from Harley-Davidson and decided to do a full restoration while I looked for work. A friend of mine helped with the rust repair to the RM-425 deck and the some of the paint work. I've included a link to the Photobucket web site. There you can copy, then past this link into your web browser to see the slide show of its progress from unrestored to restored. I've got to add more pictures of the mower deck now that that is finished and I'll add video (next spring) when I get it out for it's first work since restoration. Check it out: http://s1279.photobucket.com/user/DKR977/slideshow/855%20Wheel%20Horse%20Restoration

I've repaired a few decks. My procedure worked well for me. 1st, deck off (duh!), I then cut sheetmetal approx to cover holes. Clamp plates where needed and drill. I then, re-bolt removed parts. Use stainless steel bolts, flat and lock washers, locking nuts too. I run a tap, clean threads where the pulley cover is secured. Then, I MIG stitch weld the plates to the deck. After welding (or someone welding for you), I disassemble the deck for cleaning 'n painting. Underside of the deck I don't care 'bout the color. Topside I use Rustoleum® Regal Red (rattle cans), suites me. All parts were hung in my barn and painted before reassembly. Of course using stainless hardware, lockin' nuts, new belts, wheels and rollers. Paint the spindle housings under the deck, they hate moisture and will rot! Here's a pic to give you a view. Keep in mind the pic is only part of my deck project. Should have taken more pics but you get the idea. I've done this to decks quite a few times, always worked well. Light gauge sheet metal and SS hardware are available at Home "Cheapo" and Lowes. Lowes has a better selection of SS hardware. If some SS bolts are not available, use Never-Seez® on the threads. Shown before tack welding. Under the deck, heavy on the paint. I usually use a brush there. Grandson loves sittin', and a little drivin', the Stallions. Horse below is sportin' the cleaned and reworked deck.

Yes you are correct. The one mounted on this tractor is a reproduction as I am saving my originals for different projects.

I'm thinking torque. It is the ability to do work and is measured in lb-ft…. Hp is just a mathematical equation that uses torque's its base over time and really isn't an accurate representation of its ability to accomplish task. The equation is lb-ft /time ( Pound feet divided by time). One horsepower equals 33,000 lb-ft/minute so therefore HP= lb/ft x rpm x 6.283/33,000….(torque x rpm x 2pi divided by 33,000. Think of it this way…. high torque means it can do more work…like bodybuilder lets say. Horsepower is closer representation of how quick it can do something…like a sprinter. You have a body builder and a sprinter run 100 yards and time them…the sprinter will blow the body builder away but if you put 100 pounds of weight on their backs and have them run the 100 the body builder will not notice that much of a difference and do the 100 in a similar time, while the sprinter will be much slower as he is built to be quick but not powerful under great loads…. Great now I'm confused

Very nice work so far! The silver really "pops" with the yellow. Quick question, the _/ shaped bar is for headlights, right? I've never gotten to take a close look at one.

Well for your humble consideration is my 1973 18 Auto again. It wasn't good enough last month but maybe I will get lucky this time around. I got her in 2011 and it took 8 months to redo her from top to bottom except for the engine. When I bought her in 2011 she was a basket case as you can see. They hydro pump and motor was run out of oil and burned up, car tires on the back, front ones didn't hold air, a seat that a beaver had attacked at some point, no 3 point hitch and a wiring harness that looked like a 4 year old made it, the plow frame was bent and so was the moldboard like it hit something solid at about 10 MPH. But I didn't give up....I tore it pretty much down to the frame, purchased 3 hydro pumps and a motor and Made 1 good of each out of a bunch of parts. Cleaned the tranny completely after finding silicone clogging the intake screen, stripped everything to bare metal and rewelded all the broken parts, fixed all the dents and dings this poor thing got in its previously rough life and started from scratch rebuilding things the way I would have done it if I was Wheel Horse 1973. I added LED lights on both front and rear of the fenders and the headlights. I did a bunch of work for a member on here and scored me a bent up and rusted 3 point which I straightened and redid after soaking it for 2 weeks in tranny fluid and acetone to loosen all the rusted parts. Repainted everything and got a seat that was close to what was offered in 73 on it. I made turning brakes from a bunch of pieces that I got along with some ingenuity and custom fab work from my Dad and myself, 29-9.50x15 Titan R-3 sneakers in the back and a set of 18-9.50x8 turf tires up front. I remade the entire wiring harness and added a multi-fuse block. It was a labor of love from the start because I have wanted an 18 auto from the time I was old enough to read the 1973 sales brochure my Dad got with his 12 Auto. I decided at that point I was going to have an "Estate Tractor" someday. I also re-engineered the 60 inch mower deck from a 520 and installed it on the 18 Auto. Fabbing a carriage and hanger system from a bunch of parts from a 48" belly deck from a 1977 D-200 and leftover 520 deck carriage parts. It is the best mower I have ever seen but due to the high hours on the engine I have to mow pretty slow for it to not bog down. The grass looks amazing though when its done. She plows snow like an animal and I think it will only get better once I get a newer 20 horse to rebuild. I heard that these engines were conservatively rated. The 18 was close to 26 horsepower and the 20 was closer to 29. The whole thread can be followed here

I installed the rear hitch on the recently added 520xi, and then mounted the plow along with wheel weights plus rubber tire chains. I then used it to clear my trail through the property for when snow will arrive is always a question mark around here. It was 70 degrees on Friday!

And now for the grand finale... I've got the quick hitch to add back still, but here is the tractor fully put back together and decals installed. I'm very happy with how it turned out. The paint doesn't have the automotive quality gloss that some restorations do, but for doing it myself in my garage with rattle cans, I am very happy. The decals from Redo your Horse look great. I can't wait to try out a few implements and take it to a show. So far, I have just ridden it around the yard pulling the kids in the wagon. Dave
